All the photographs shown on this site are my own, ©Martin Mee. This site will receive regular updates, so please come back soon... UPDATE : I have recently upgraded to medium format ( Mamiya 7II ) but alas I have no way of scanning images in anymore :-( ... needless to say I'm now saving up for a new scanner. The likely candidate is the Epson 2450 - watch this space for pictures that'll simply blow you away ;-) In the meantime, check out my visit to Yosemite in June 2000. I've added some real stunners to the collection - best time of the year for those waterfalls. IMPORTANT NOTE: These pictures are best viewed with your monitor calibrated properly. At the very least, the contrast should be set to maximum and the brightness set to the black point, the point at which the black outer border matches the colour 'black' on the main part of your display (set the backdrop of windows to black to correct this).

Usefilm.com Feature Article Cold Weather Photography By Steve Kaufman for Usefilm.com
Living in Alaska, I am often asked about cold weather photography, and how well camera equipment survives severe cold. My reply almost always starts with a little story. In 1979 I decided to change careers with a goal of eventually pursuing photography on a full-time basis. I had been working as a seasonal park ranger in Mount McKinley National Park (now Denali), and felt frustration that my work, as enjoyable as it was, prevented me from taking photos in one of the most productive places for wildlife photography in North America. On my time off I could and did spend large amounts of time photographing wildlife, but when I was at work the cameras had to stay at home, and it always seemed that it was at those times when I would see the most fantastic things. I've always used Nikon cameras, and I have never taken any special precautions to prepare my camera equipment for the cold. I didn't carry a camera every day at work, but I did try to take photos on some of the coldest days. With the right clothing, it is possible to be comfortable in even the coldest weather. But trying to use a camera in severe cold introduces a number of problems. Anyone who has spent time in a cold environment knows the dangers of exposing bare skin to any seriously cold object, and a camera is no different. I've frostbitten finger tips trying to change film, and many times I've "burned" the skin just above my eye from touching it to the top of the view finder.

Taking photos in the bright light of the snow or in frigid air makes for a challenge for any photographer. Add in the action of the slopes or the antics of a child, and you've got your work cut out. Here are some tips from the experts. Get out there and shoot and don't forget to enter the Kidznsnow Photo Contest! Photographers complain that one of the most common problems of working in the field is running out of battery power. And the problem only gets worse in cold weather, which saps battery efficiency. How to deal with this difficulty? Chuck DeLaney, Dean of the New York Institute of Photography, America's oldest and largest photography school, counsels all photographers to "keep the camera, flash, and batteries as warm as possible, even if that means keeping them under your coat or near your body for warmth." The problem of preserving battery power is a particularly serious one with today's auto-everything cameras that are totally dependent on batteries. It's an even more troublesome problem with digital cameras, which guzzle batteries in all weather and often become utterly uncooperative in temperatures below freezing. Whether you're trying to shoot digital or working with a film-based camera, DeLaney urges everyone to bring plenty of extra batteries out into the cold. And if you're staked out in the freezing weather trying to photograph a subject over a period of time

I have been intercepting and photographing severe weather events for severalyears now. To access my severe weather website, please click HERE.
http://www.geologywales.co.uk/tornado.htm
Storm-chasing is an activity normally associated with the Great Plains of the USA, Tornado Alley and the film Twister. But the UK in fact gets more tornadoes per square mile than the USA! They are, however, almost always weak affairs compared to the destructive storms that cut swathes through Kansas, Oklahoma and elsewhere.
I have been intercepting and photographing severe weather events for several years now. It gets you away from the desk, gives you a much better understanding of meteorology and the photographic potential is awesome! It can also get quite exciting at times.

How Should I Handle My Camera
in Cold Weather?
'Tis the season, the folks at the New York Institute of Photography are getting lots of letters from NYI students and other Web visitors about taking photos in cold weather. They've been kind enough to contribute this piece and another which discusses how to take great ski photographs, and that means going out in the cold. So you better be ready. In fact, there are lots of great photo opportunities in the winter wonderland near where you live, you just need to get out there and take the proper steps. The problem with lots of tips about cold weather photography is that they get out of sequence. Here's why. There are really three different scenarios to consider: First, what to do when you take your camera from a warm, cozy home into the bitter cold outside. Second, what to do when you're shooting pictures outside in the cold. Third, what to do when you finally bring your freezing camera back into that warm cozy house. Okay. First, what should you do when you bring your warm camera outside? Do you have to worry about moisture condensing from the cold air onto the warm surface of the lens or the film or the electronics? No. Cold air has low moisture content. There's little or no condensation when you go outside into the cold. (As we'll discuss, this becomes a problem when you go back inside.)
