Nasty weather photography, Part 2
by Tom Hirsch
by Tom Hirsch For strikingly dramatic shots, there's nothing like a nice, gentle spring shower, or even a mist or light drizzle, to give the world a fresh appearance. Moist flowers and foliage glisten, and wet sidewalks and pavement produce dazzling reflections of people, cars, buildings and trees.
There is also nothing like a wet camera when the electronic gadgetry goes on the fritz. With most cameras, if the electronic components get wet, the camera will stop functioning altogether. You might be lucky enough that everything will work properly when the camera dries out, but don't count on it. In many cases, the camera will shut down permanently, or until the owner pays the exorbitant cost of repair. Rain or drizzle falling on the camera will cause the most damage, but even fog or high humidity can cause the camera to malfunction, at least temporarily.
If you plan on getting into weather photography big time, there are several relatively inexpensive compact cameras on the market that are water-resistant. Many of these cameras are not waterproof so they can't be dunked, but they do very nicely in a rainstorm.

dealing with the problems of cold weather photography
Photographers complain that one of the most common problems of working in the field is running out of battery power. And the problem only gets worse in cold weather, which saps battery efficiency. How to deal with this difficulty? Chuck DeLaney, Dean of the New York Institute of Photography, America’s oldest and largest photography school, counsels all photographers to 'keep the camera, flash, and batteries as warm as possible, even if that means keeping them under your coat or near your body for warmth.' The problem of preserving battery power is a particularly serious one with today’s auto-everything cameras that are totally dependent on batteries. It’s an even more troublesome problem with digital cameras, which guzzle batteries in all weather and often become utterly uncooperative in temperatures below freezing. Whether you’re trying to shoot digital or working with a film-based camera, DeLaney urges everyone to bring plenty of extra batteries out into the cold. And if you’re staked out in the freezing weather trying to photograph a subject over a period of time, set up your tripod, but if possible, keep your camera with you under your coat until the decisive moment. A quick-release tripod head that allows you to pop your camera on and off will come in particularly handy in this situation. Whatever you do, don’t let the cold deter you after all, winter is a great time to photograph skiers and kids building snowmen and snow on pine trees. Just be sure to protect your gear from the elements.

New Mexico Tech Doctoral Candidate Keeps his Lens Focused on the Sky by George Zamora
(Note: all photos in this article were taken and provided by Harald Edens.)
SOCORRO, N.M., October 31, 2002 New Mexico Tech doctoral candidate Harald Edens has been keeping a close watch on the sky.
Since he's a Ph.D. student studying atmospheric physics at the state-supported research university, the very nature of his discipline often requires a lot of sky-watching.
However, Edens' interest in atmospheric phenomena isn't confined solely to the scientific realm: Edens also harbors a passion for weather photography an avocation which takes him out in the middle of lightning storms, when most people opt to run for cover.
"What it was that started up my weather photography hobby back when I was about 12 or 13 years old, I still do not exactly know," Edens says.
"I think my interest in it was triggered by lightning, if you'll excuse the pun," he adds with a smile.
As a small child growing up in Holland, Edens can remember being initially terrified of the thunderstorms that would roll across the Dutch landscape in the spring and summer months.
