The Weed Science Society of America The Weed Science Society of America was founded in 1956. The Society was established to encourage and promote the development of knowledge concerning weeds and their impact on the environment. The society membership currently consists of approximately 2,000 scientists worldwide. The Society publishes two journals, Weed Science and Weed Technology.
Mission Statement
The Weed Science Society of America promotes research, education, and extension outreach activities related to weeds; provides science-based information to the public and policy makers; and fosters awareness of weeds and their impacts on managed and natural ecosystems See our jobs listing Join/start a discussion group Get an update on the weed biology committee activities Information on the Invasive Plant Conference, 3-7 Nov 2003. The Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) publishes original research and scholarship in the form of peer-reviewed articles in two international journals. Weed Science is focused on understanding “why” phenomena occur. As such, it focuses on fundamental research directly related to all aspects of weed science, including invasive plant species.

The Cutting Edge in Weed Science
    News and Advancements
Biological Control practices in weed management are truly on the Cutting Edge of Weed Science, although they have been in place for several years now. Here in Weber County, we took the lead in having insects introduced on Purple Loosestrife, an invader in our wetlands. James Barnhill from the USU Extension Office has really taken hold of this project and in the last four years has introduced 6 (?) species of host specific insects in Purple Loosestrife infested areas along the Weber River. Pictured to the right is one of the beetles, Galerucella calmariensis , that now inhabits the loosestrife population there. For more detailed information, navigate to the Purple Loosestrife bio-control page Knapweed Infestations in the North Fork Environmental Center area have been on the cutting edge of biological control for seven years now. The results have been extremely satisfying and so successful that others are collecting live insects at this site for distribution in other counties and states. For a closer look into this continuing project, navigate to the Knapweeds bio-control pages Noxious Weeds that respond well to biological controls and that have these kinds of insects and agents available are listed below. Follow the link to a page specific to the weed listed. As time goes on, we will add photographs of the resulting biological control activities right in our own "back yard" as well as around the country.

    Information for Persons Seeking Positions
I have no personal knowledge of the positions advertised nor the advertisers. I assume that the listings have been submitted in good faith. Advertisers do frequently extend the closing date so it is worth enquiring about a position which is still listed even though the closing date has passed.

Information for Persons Wishing to Advertise Positions
Why advertise your weed science position here? First, you get worldwide advertising - most of the younger generation surf the Internet when job hunting. Second, it is fast - it can be on this page the same day that you e-mail it me. Compare this with the WSSA Newsletter which only comes out every three months and requires submissions one and a half months prior to publication. Third, and best of all, it's free.

    20. Changes In Pteridium Aquilinum Phytotoxicity
Following treatments with lime, sulphuric acid, wood ash, glyphosate and ammonium nitrate. Abstract of a paper published in weed science (1996) 36.
    http://www.svek.slu.se/Abstracts/AD961.HTM
Changes in Pteridium aquilinum growth and phytotoxicity following treatments with lime, sulphuric acid, wood ash, glyphosate and ammonium nitrate.
    Ann Dolling
    Weed Research (1996) 36: 293-301
    E-mail:Ann.Dolling@svek.slu.se
The comparative effects of lime, sulphuric acid, wood ash, glyphosate and ammonium nitrate on Pteridium aqulinum (L.) Kuhn growth and development were evaluated in a Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) clear cut stand in south-east Sweden over a four-year period. P. aquilinum growth was effectively controlled following the application of glyphosate, but the other treatments generally had little effect on growth of P. aquilinum in terms of shoot density and length. Shoot length was positively related to the number of shoots on plots treated with ammonium nitrate but negatively correlated with the number of P. aquilinum shoots found on wood ash treated and control plots. In a bioassay aspen ( Populus tremula L.) seedling emergence and pH were significantly lower in humus treated with sulphuric acid, glyphosate, ammonium nitrate and untreated humus as compared to the humus treated with lime and wood ash. The negative effect of humus on emergence of aspen seedlings may be caused by phytotoxic compounds at a lower pH level. Forest regeneration might be performed with shade-tolerant species such as Norway spruce seedlings planted beneath a thin canopy of trees to prevent the rapid increase of P. aquilinum
