The control of weeds is a crucial component of any farm management system because weed competition with crops results in costly reductions in the quantity and quality of food and fiber. The mission of scientists at the Southern Weed Science Research Unit is to evaluate safe, efficient, and economical approaches for the management of weeds. Specific research objectives include:
  • Developing sustainable integrated weed management systems for agronomic, horticultural, and aquatic crops;
  • Discover new pathogens to use as bioherbicides and develop sustainable methods for weed biocontrol;
  • Evaluating biochemical, genetic, and ecological effects of natural and synthetic herbicides and develop strategies to reduce adverse effects;
  • Assess impacts of herbicide use and alternative weed management practices on the environmental health of sustainable agricultural systems.

    The Land Grant Mission is alive and well at the University of Nebraska. Weed Science research, teaching, and extension programs are committed to addressing long- and short-term pest management needs in an integrated pest management context. The scope of activities spans pest ecology to integrated weed management systems to the fate of pesticides in the environment. A core group of faculty in Lincoln are responsible for teaching and statewide coordination of extension programs and research in their respective fields. Faculty located at the five Research and Extension Centers across the state address the research and extension needs of the state's diverse agriculture. Faculty on the Lincoln campus and at the Research and Extension Centers advise graduate students.
    A distinct rainfall gradient of 350 mm in the west to 900 mm in eastern Nebraska gives rise to a diverse agriculture. Wheat fallow and irrigated vegetable production typifies the western third of the state; irrigated corn and alfalfa crop production and extensive grazing lands account for the center third; and the more typical midwestern corn/soybean production systems dominate the eastern third. This diversity offers a wonderful environment for the study of crop and rangeland ecosystems.

    OBJECTIVES
    This is the only laboratory division in INRA working on weed science. The aim encompasses the study of weed population dynamics and evolution, and infestation modelling. This is to provide better crop protection strategies for the maintenance of optimal populations which function according to economic demands and respect for the environment. With this aim expert evaluations available for consultation are developed and maintained in the laboratory.
    Yield development of annual grain legumes for modelling of the population functioning is also a part of the laboratory interest.

Basic and applied studies in weed ecology, weed-crop competition, herbicide efficacy, environmental fate, crop tolerance, and cultural agronomics are conducted to assess the impact of weed interference, determine critical weed density thresholds, discover ways to optimize herbicide performance and crop safety, and integrate cultural and chemical control methods. Experimental and non-labeled herbicides are evaluated to assess their fit and potential usefulness in semi-arid dry land cropping systems.
