FIFTY YEARS HAVE PASSED since Trinidad and Tobago began its Olympic journey. A half century since a team of three athletes travelled to the 1948 games in London with the aim of attaining glory for a small British colony. With the exception of 1960, the last five decades have seen this nation represented in 12 Olympiads with a total of 90 athletes in eight different disciplines: badminton, boxing, cycling, shooting, swimming, track and field, weightlifting and yachting. It wasn't until the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo that Trinidad and Tobago returned to the fold as an independent nation with a team of ten competitors. It was on the athletic track that the greatest prosperity was attained. Edwin Roberts, an outstanding collegian with the University of North Carolina, made it to the final of the 200m where he earned a bronze medal. The 1972 Olympic Games in Munich saw two important records being established. Trinidad and Tobago fielded its largest ever contingent of 20 athletes, among whom a female sprinter, Laura Pierre was included for the first time. Once again, the top performances came on the athletic track.

March 9, 2000 Suzanne Leathers, RN, can carry her weight at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Ga., but that isn’t where the real weightlifting begins. Leathers can hang with the best of them in the clean-and-jerk and the snatch, forms of competitive weightlifting that have propelled her to visions of Olympic success. Leathers, who has been lifting weights for seven years, trains rigorously for three hours a day during the week, then works two 12-hour shifts on weekends as an intensive care nurse on the ICU med/surg trauma team at Memorial Health. She says the hospital has been great in allowing her to pursue her dreams, which may come true this month. For the first time in Olympic history, female weightlifting will be featured as an event and Leathers, ranked seventh in the nation in the 75-kg (165-pound) weight class, has a good shot at being one of four weightlifters who will be chosen to compete in Sydney, Australia, this summer.

49. AWLA History Of Weightlifting
history of weightlifting. It's right. In those early days, olympic weightliftingincorporated some events which would seem strange today.
http://www.geocities.com/awla250/history.htm
History of Weightlifting It's almost impossible to trace an exact date of the first weightlifting championship. Tests of human strength, in one form or another, are probably older than civilization itself. Images of athletes lifting heavy objects, apparently for sport, appear in ancient Egyptian records, in Chinese texts and in Greek carvings. The first organized weightlifting competitions began in Europe in the late 1800's, and the sport's first world champion was crowned in 1891. In those unsophisticated days there were no divisions, the world crown went to the man able to lift the most weight, regardless of his own size. Weightlifting was on the program for the first Games in 1896, as part of athletics, but was left out of the 1900 Games. It reappeared in 1904 but didn't return to the Olympic fold again until 1920 when it was admitted in its own right. In those early days, Olympic weightlifting incorporated some events which would seem strange today. The first competitions consisted of one and two-handed lifts with no weight divisions. But by 1932 five weight divisions had been established and three disciplines made up the competition - press, snatch and clean-and-jerk. In 1972 the press was abolished, leaving the snatch and clean and jerk as the sport's two Olympic disciplines. The women's competition made its Olympics debut in 2000 in Sydney.

POHNPEI, Palikir (FSM Information Service): September 2000 - Today, September 15, the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia began, and 11 Federated States of Micronesia participants have entered into history as the first athletes from the FSM to participate in the most famous games in world. Participating in the events with their event are Welbert Samuel, swimming; Tracy Anny Route, swimming; Regina Shotaro, track and field; Manuel Minginfel, weightlifting; and Elias Rodriquez, marathon. Accompanying the FSM team is Dr. Eliuel Pretrick, FSM National Olympic Committee president and Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Social Affairs; Berney Martin, chef de mission; James Tobin, FSMNOC secretary-general; Sweeter Daniel, swim coach; Marcellus Akapito, athletic coach; and Vanston Waguk, weightlifting coach. In 1997, the FSM became the member of the International Olympic Committee due to the efforts of many coaches and sports enthusiasts in the FSM and to a lot of work by Jim Tobin, who came to the FSM almost 20 years ago with the dream of putting the FSM in the Olympic family. http://www.vicweightlifting.com/AboutWeightlifting.htm
Home About Weightlifting The Coaching Team Mermet Stadium ... Masters Notices WHAT IS WEIGHTLIFTING ? Although commonly seen as a test of strength, Weightlifting is a sport which develops many other positive physical and psychological attributes in its participants. Qualities such as Flexibility, Speed of Movement, Co-ordination and Concentration are vital ingredients for success on the Weightlifting competition platform, and these qualities can be developed and enhanced by following a well planned Weightlifting training program under the guidance of a qualified coach. Many people watch the Weightlifters competing at the Olympic Games and marvel at their amazing feats of strength and power. But even these Champions were not born with a barbell in their hands. They too were once beginners who chose to take up the challenge and follow the path that has eventually taken them to the heights of international competition and brought them success at the elite level. Competition Competitors have to lift a weight called the barbell, which consists of a steel bar (weighing 20kg for a men’s, 15 kg for a women’s barbell) onto which rubber-coated and differently coloured weight discs are loaded and fastened with the help of collars (weighing 2.5 kg each). Competition takes place on wooden platforms four meters square where each athlete performs the lifts. Each performer is given three attempts at each lift with their highest successful weight on each exercise being added together to make a Total. In the Olympic Games and many International competitions placing in each bodyweight class is determined solely by these Totals; however at World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and some other International events, medals are also awarded for placing in each lift.

Clash of the Titans The Road to Athens gets bumpy in San Jose
By Kevin Neuendorf // USOC Media Relations // Dec. 23, 2002
The 2003 Titan Games will take us back to a simpler time; a competition stripped of such glamour sports as swimming, basketball and gymnastics, and focused on combative sports steeped in Olympic history and teeming with intriguing and flamboyant personalities. Add in a circus-like element of four simultaneous competitions plus the lure of the world’s best, and what you have stuffed into the Event Center at San Jose State University is positively Titanesque. Played out over three days, Feb. 13-15, the Titan Games are Cupid’s antithesis as there will be no love lost between combatants battling for over $80,000 in prize money and for the title of Ultimate Titan. The “Road To Athens” for America’s elite boxers, fencers, shot putters, wrestlers, weightlifters and judo, taekwondo and karate athletes matches them up with the world’s powers in each of these respective sports. It’s a sporting mix sure to please any fan. Boxing, wrestling, weightlifting and forms of judo were all part of the original Olympic Games and the excitement and intensity generated by these sports carries with us today. U.S. boxers will re-acquaint themselves with their biggest rivals, the Cubans. Wrestling will showcase college legend Cael Sanderson and local hero Eric Guerrero, a former star at San Jose’s Independence High School and three-time national champion at Oklahoma State.

http://www.olympic-usa.org/athlete_tips/nott.html
Tara Nott, Weightlifting Tara is Nott just another woman. She is the first American woman to earn a weightlifting gold medal (2000 Sydney Olympic Games) and she is the only athlete in history to train at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in three different sports. She began her athletic career as a gymnast, before becoming an All-American women's soccer player. When she missed making the 1996 U.S. Olympic soccer team, Nott started weightlifting to keep in shape; at the time women's weightlifting was not even an Olympic sport. Women's weightlifting made its debut at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and Nott took home the gold. Tara trains four hours, seven days a week, and her hard work and dedication have paid off. She is a holds five American records, is a four-time National champion and is one of only U.S. women who can clean and jerk twice her own body weight. Get Off My Land!* Tips for Squatting
Tip #1

Position feet shoulder width or a bit wider apart. Toes should be slightly turned out. Tip #2
Place the bar on the back of your shoulders. (This should be done using a squat rack that you can back out of with the bar on your shoulders) Also place your hands on the bar slightly wider than shoulder width to help support and stabilize the bar.

http://www.wlinfo.com/what_is_olympic.htm
What Is Olympic-Style Weightlifting All About? The sport of Olympic-style "Weightlifting" is one of the world's most misunderstood and under-appreciated sports. Part of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 (with a women's event having been added in 2000), Weightlifting is the only Olympic sport in which heavy weights are used. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognize only two weightlifting events, which must be done in all competitions in the following order: a) the two hands snatch (snatch), and b) the two hands clean and jerk (C&J). The overall winner of any weightlifting competition is the athlete who lifts the highest amount of weight in the snatch and C&J (i.e., the heaviest weights successfully lifted in each event are combined) . This combined score is called the "Total." While awards are given at major competitions for each event as well as the Total, recognition in the sport of weightlifting goes to the athlete who lifts the greatest total weight in competition. When a weightlifting aficionado speaks of the "World Champion" in weightlifting, he or she is generally speaking about the winner in the Total. In the snatch , the bar is pulled in one explosive motion from the floor to full arm's length overhead. In order to make the lift easier to perform, athletes typically bend their legs quickly while the bar is rising in order to catch the bar at arm's length. The combined attributes of great strength and blinding speed are needed to accomplish this challenging event effectively. The best lifters in the world (in the lighter weight classes can lift as much as 2.5 times their bodyweight in the Snatch). The best superheavyweight weightlifters in history have lifted nearly 500 lb./227.5 kg. in this lift.
