Book reviews for a wide variety of Pagan and wiccan books categorized by content.

Welcome! to my little corner of the web. I hope to provide some useful and interesting information for the Pagan communityand I hope you enjoy your stay!
Book Reviews
In travelling the Pagan web, I've seen many, many lists of recommended books, very few of which tell me why I should read them. I'm very aware of the pitfalls of book reviews, but I'd rather have them to read than buy a book blindly. That's why I decided to create this siteI figured if I find this area lacking in the Pagan web community, someone else must as well. In reading these, keep in mind that my reviews absolutely reflect my own biases. A book I love, you may hate. One I find nearly useless may be the most well-worn volume on your shelf. On the other hand, there are very few books on my Pagan bookshelf that I haven't gotten something out ofsome books are treasure troves, in others you have to dig through a lot of dust to find the diamondsand my reviews will also reflect that. I've divided the reviews into rough categories based on what the book seems to be about predominantly; obviously there will be a lot of crossover (most of the books in the Wicca and Witchcraft section also contain information on spells and Sabbat celebrations, for example). Keep in mind also that these reviews are intended only to give the reader a general idea of whether a given book might be useful for themI'm not offering detailed critical analyses (at least not at this time) of style or content. There's certainly a place for that sort of review, and I love to read them when I find them, but it isn't my emphasis here.

    Wiccan Paths
    (Traditions)
    Gardnerian Wicca
A retired British civil servant named Gerald B. Gardner is the 'Grandfather', at the very least, of almost all Neo-Wicca. He was initiated into a coven of Witches in the New Forest region of England in 1939 by a High Priestess named 'Old Dorothy' Clutterbuck. In 1949 he wrote a novel [*High Magic's Aid*] about medieval Witchcraft in which quite a bit of the Craft as practiced by that coven was used. In 1951 the last of the English laws against Witchcraft were repealed (primarily due to the pressure of Spiritualists) and Gardner published *Witchcraft Today*, which set forth a version of the rituals and traditions of that coven. There is an enormous amount of disagreement about virtually every statement I have made in this paragraph. Gardnerism is both a tradition and a family, and lineage is a family tree. The High Priestess rules the coven, and the principles of love and trust preside. We follow our handed down book more carefully than many others, but we are free to add and improvise, as long as we preserve the original. We work skyclad, practice binding and scourging, are hierarchal and secretive, therefore we are controversial. We're also controversial because we were first - the first craft tradition in the U. S. and descended from the man largely responsible for starting the craft revival. So, we're called 'the snobs of the craft', but I think we're as much fun as anyone else; our parties as good, our jokes as bad'

    100. Tracing The Origins Of The Modern Wiccan Movement
Tracing the history, influences, and individuals responsible for the modern wiccan revival.
    http://www.spotlightministries.org.uk/wiccaorigins.htm
    Tracing the Origins of the
    Modern Wiccan Movement
    www.spotlightministries.org.uk
Many Wiccans will often claim that the Wiccan religion is an ancient pre-Christian religion. Such an assertion is usually made to give an air of maturity, and hence authority to the religion. It is most certainly true that there were many pre-Christian religions that worshipped a Goddess, and it is entirely possible that a hereditary tradition could have been passed down throughout the ages, but such a position is very difficult to prove. "It is now fairly well established that modern witchcraft was formulated in the early 1950's. A significant minority, however, claim that they do belong to an unbroken inherited tradition, that comes to them through their own family rather than any social inheritance. Scholarship on this subject has so far failed to provide any proof to support these claims." ( It would appear that Wicca can be traced to more modern times, mainly from one man - Gerald Gardner. Phyllis Curott observes: "Contemporary Wicca is a modern, vital, dynamic religion. This statement flies in the face of the myth of our origin that many have subscribed to for a long time…There have been some thorough and carefully researched work published recently…that challenges the belief that modern Witchcraft is a historically unbroken, organized, hereditary tradition that can be consistently traced back to a golden era of matriarchy and worship of a single Great Goddess. However, there have always been individuals who claim they were initiated in traditions which remain hidden behind veils of secrecy - and there may indeed be hereditary traditions waiting for a safer time to emerge…The fact is that the origins of much of our current practice can be traced back to the creative genius of Gerald Gardner who surfaced publicly in England in the late 1940's and early 1950's…" (
