UK Muslims Feel Pig Lit Ban is Unnecessary
- Muslims in Batley, West Yorkshire (where over half of schoolage children are Muslim) were surprised when a school unexpectedly banned stories involving pigs to their students. Headteacher Barbara Harris said the decision was about respect , claiming that the literature "could have caused offence to religious sensitivities." She sent a memo to staff that fiction books containing pigs should be removed from classes with students below seven years of age. But Inayat Bunglawala, of the Muslim Council of Britain, said, "This is bizarre. There is nothing to stop children reading about pigs. The ban is simply on the consumption of pork and pig products." Among the classic childrens' books with pigs are Charlottes Web Winnie the Pooh Babe , and George Orwell's Animal Farm . Trying not to be too harsh in the face of a rare sensitivity to Muslims, the

Barges
*Chorus: Barges, I would like to go with you
I would like to sail the ocean blue
Barges, have you treasures in your hold
Do you fight with pirates, brave and bold? Out of my window looking in the night
I can see the barge's flickering light
Quietly flows the river to the sea
As the barges do go silently
Out of my window looking in the night
I can see the barge's flickering light
Starboard shines green and port is glowing red
I can see the barges just ahead How my heart yerns to sail away with you As you sail across the ocean blue But I must stay here by my window dear As the barges sail away from here (Extra verse) Away from my window on into the night I will watch til they are out of sight Taking their cargo far across the sea I wish that someday they'd take me

The Circle Game
*Chorus: And the seasons they go 'round and 'round And the painted ponies go up and down We are captive on a carousel of time We can't return, we can only look Behind from where we came And go 'round and 'round and 'round In The Circle Game Yesterday a child came out to wander Caught a dragonfly inside a jar Fearful when the sky was full of thunder And tearful at the falling of a star Then the child moved ten times 'round the seasons Skated over ten clear frozen streams Words like "when you're older" must appease him And promises of "someday" make his dreams Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now Cartwheels turned to car wheels through the town

It's really a win-win situation. Mom gets to enjoy a day without having to work, cook or clean. The kids get to spend the day at Disneyland. I think I sense an ulterior motive here.... For other families, Mother's Day means taking mom to the Mother's Day Brunch at the Disneyland Hotel. It's a big, fancy event, and mom gets treated like royalty. But, maybe you've done that before. Maybe you're ready for a new Mother's Day tradition for your family? We've got just the thing! The expansion of the Disneyland Resort has brought an explosion in your Mother's Day Brunch choices. In fact, there are so many different options, it's going to be hard to decide. We're going to make it a little easier, by giving you a taste of what's available at the Disneyland Resort this year. You'll find enough tempting ideas here to keep surprising Mom for years. Today, I'll tell you about the events offered at the Resort Hotels, and inside the parks. Tomorrow, you'll hear about the special plans the Downtown Disney restaurants have in store for you. Disneyland Hotel Disney's Royal Buffet - Mother's Day 2001. For the traditionalists, or for the first timer. This is classic annual event, and by far the largest. The Grand Ballroom is transformed into a lavishly decorated theme buffet. The food is always quite good, with a wide selection to choose from. You'll find a variety of carving stations; made to order waffles; salad bars and custom omelets; hot pasta stations and a variety of baked goods.

Party Game Ideas
Cake Walks
With A Different Twist
The basic concept of a cake walk can be utilized to fit many different party themes. (Click HERE if you are not familiar with cake walks) Following are some examples of how this game can be altered: Star Wars Theme - Instead of numbered squares on the floor, use numbered space ships and call it a "Wookie Walk". Play theme songs from Star Wars for the music and use items such as Star Wars figurines or other Star Wars memorabilia as prizes. You could even darken the room abit and use a strobe light for special effects. This idea can work for most space themes and for a variation of the game, you can use named planets and star constellations for the floor spaces. Also, instead of the children walking around in a circle, each child could pick a square to stand on and the birthday child could spin around in the center blindfolded with a light saber pointing outward and whoever he ends up pointing at is the winner. If you use this method be sure to make the circle large and have someone guide the blindfolded child. Backwards Party Wizard of Oz Theme - Construct a circular or square yellow brick road out of construction paper or use rolled out paper such as what is used for table cloths. The road could also be drawn directly on concrete with chalk with large numbers placed approximately 2 1/2 feet apart. Instead of numbers, a list of the stops that Dorothy made on her way to Oz could be used such as the Land of the Munchkins, the corn field, the talking apple trees, the woods, the poppy field, the Land of Oz, and the Witches Castle, or other related parts of the movie such as the fortune teller, Toto, Auntie Em, Kansas, etc. Play The Wizard Of Oz theme song and have the children skip around the circle or square to the music.

On the whole, I found it a so-so read. I enjoyed the political consciousness-raising aspects of it and some of the descriptions of the village in the Congo: the women walking by, carrying their loads; the rains; the market. I did not enjoy what I found was Kingsolver's heavy-handed characterizations. I have already stated that I disliked, and found intrusive, her use of the various "voices" to carry forward the narrative. I found her continued use of malapropisms and vocabulary errors for Rachel particularly infuriating. As a matter of fact, I found myself tempted to skip some of the "daughters'" chapters, and just go with the mother. I did not, but I wonder how it would read if one simply followed that thread.
