43. BookPage Children's Review: Halloween Roundup
As he explains Boo's a baby word, Bubbie./It rhymes with toodleloo,/And Winniethe pooh,/And it They'd seen the lit pumpkin and smelled the warm pie.
http://www.bookpage.com/9810bp/childrens/halloween_roundup.html
Halloween books usher in non-scary fun Monster, witches, werewolves it's hardly any surprise that Halloween can be pretty darn scary for young children. So scary, in fact, that my son's preschool bans costumes and Halloween parties. The right books, however, can gently introduce children to Halloween fun, while reassuring them about their fears. I plan to take several of the following books, which my four-year-old son adores, to his school for classroom reading. REVIEWS BY ALICE CARY In Jan L. Waldron's rhyming tale, John Pig's Halloween , poor John Pig is too scared to go trick or treating, so he stays home. As he begins carving a pumpkin, a witch and her cat arrive at his doorstep, demanding goodies. They turn up their noses at the licorice and rock candy that John Pig offers, but kindly help him whip up a veritable feast of pumpkin pies, tarts, cookies, sundaes, muffins, mousse, and spiced apple juice. Soon the house is filled with the witch's friends a vampire, a ghost, a dragon who gobble up the treats and have a shindig. Even fearful John Pig warms up to the crowd: "As this ghostly group danced and chowed down his food,/A beaming John Pig was caught up in the mood." Readers will also be caught up in the mood of this charming tale. Illustrator David McPhail manages to make even creepy visitors appear charming.

Children's Books We have, in fact, a pretty good collection of children's literature. It will be found in the CURRICULUM COLLECTION in the Main Stacks. This is a room whose entrance is at the far end of Rows 52-53. We have virtually all of the Newbery and Caldecott winners, and, for the last 10 years or so have been receiving all of the winners and runners up in a number of different children's book award programs, like Coretta Scott King, American Library Association's Notable Book/Best Book listings, Boston Globe, Scott O'Dell, and more. It all adds up to a pretty substantial set. And, of course, there are good collections in the local public libraries. All of these books are listed in OSCAR with the Location listed as Orradre Curriculum . If you want to browse this collection, go in the Curriculum Room and look at the books with call numbers beginning PZ.

47. The Hundred Acre Wood
You all were raised on winnie the pooh and you know the books and the mouth and nonethelessloveable codependent in all of childrens' literature Remember pooh?
http://smith2.sewanee.edu/gsmith/Texts/Sewanee/100acrewood.html
The Hundred Acre Wood - Wilkins Talk, April 1998 I. Introduction As it has been for several years running, my assignment here tonight is "to set them at ease, try not to be too serious, and tell them a bit about Sewanee." Ok. Right. Got that. Now what do we do? I have done several of these Wilkins talks over the years and a couple of years ago, the Vice-Chancellor said to me, "One year, why don't you talk to them about the Sewanee ceremonies." So lately I have been musing a bit about Sewanee ceremonies. I took it that the Vice Chancellor meant I should talk about the "high" ceremoniesthings like Founders' Day and Commencement, and not "low down" ceremonies like funneling beer on the KA lawn or the ATO's mudslide. So maybe I had better stop mentioning things like that. Let me come at this a different way. You all were raised on Winnie the Pooh and you know the books and movies well—I hope. You recall that delightful assemblage of charactersthe boy child Christopher Robin, Piglet, Kanga, Roo, Rabbit, Gopher, Owl, and of course Christopher Robin's honey loving teddy bear, Winne the Pooh. And my favorite: Eyore. The most passive-aggressive, down in the mouth and nonetheless loveable co-dependent in all of childrens' literature. "Thanks for noticing." And then there is the place where all of the Pooh adventures get carried out, the "Hundred Acre Wood." The Hundred Acre wood is that wonderful kind of place, somewhere between Eden and Arcadia, where there is a forest and stream and hills and fields and no end of surprises as Pooh and Piglet and the others wander about. And do you recall how filled with ceremony life in the Hundred Acre wood is? How often the plot begins with or ends with or is punctuated with a ceremonial eventusually a party of some sort? Pooh and the others live in a world of innocence and funand of carefree solemnity as they honor each other back and forth in a party or in the giving of presents or in helping each other in and out of trouble.

Commissioned by the Estate of the late George Adam (Tattersall's) The VSK is a hospice for children with life threatening diseases. The theme of a constant cycle without an end was decided upon. Day eventually merges into night with the four seasons happening in between. It was dubbed 'A day in Melbourne'. Entrance: 2.4m high x 2.4m long (approx 5.8sq metres) Painted with spirit based air drying glass paint. The entrance is painted with glass paint to depict a garden, thus bringing the outside inside. Morning: 1.8m high x 3.0m long (approx 16sq metres) Painted with acrylic onto the wall and sealed with a low sheen varnish. A child awakens and looks out the bedroom window. Note the trompe l'oeil style window. Sunrise: 1.8m high x 2m long (approx 3.5sq m) Painted with acrylic onto the wall and sealed with a low sheen varnish. Sunrise takes us around the corner and the mural joins with Spring. Spring: 1.8m high x 8m long (approx 14.5sq metres) Painted with acrylic onto the wall and sealed with a low sheen varnish. This is a walk in the Botanical Gardens with George Adam (the major VSK sponsor) walking their fund raising pink pig. As the mural falls down from the ceiling a team of other piggies are trying to keep it up. Summer: 1.8m high x 6m long (approx 10.8 sq metres) Painted with acrylic onto the wall and sealed with low sheen varnish. Brighton beach in the summer time is always a good escape. The Aquarium had to stay on the bench so it was moved to the end. A seagull pulls the mural off the wall revealing an underwater scene. The existing light fitting is now an underwater flower that looks effective when lit.

(and to several key phrases for our family) Kelly spent some time these past few months compiling a dictionary for camp, to help newcomers (especially our International crew) get adjusted to life here. We have an amazing number of "inside" terms! Here are some selections from the dictionary to give some of you insight into what goes on at camp (or for those who have spent time here, a trip down memory lane.) We've also thrown in a few of our family's words (in red) so you can get acquainted with current family lingo as well.
Bell Tower the rock tower remains from the days of the lumbering town where our camp is now located. The big bell on top rings 10 minutes before meals and meetings, and is rung continuously for any camp emergency such as a fire. Bon Ami our general-purpose powdered cleanser, which is always pronounced "Bawn AM-ee". It's claimed by some staff that with enough elbow grease, Bon Ami can clean rust stains off of anything. (A few other nameless staff prefer using good old-fashioned chemicals rather than elbow grease, if they can get away with it.) Book Plug an announcement at mealtime or during a track meeting; often employing dramatic readings, corny skits, or shameless used-car sales techniques to encourage campers to buy a particular book.
