Investors use this information when deciding whether to purchase shares of stock. Employees refer to annual reports for information on their employers in areas to which they have little exposure. Potential employees use the annual report to see if the company is a good place to work. Sadly, school systems often miss the opportunity to use this format to inform their stockholders (parents and the community), attract new employees, and build morale among current workers. A good annual report for a school system should meet a number of criteria.

Contact WEMA WEMA History - The Fifth Decade, 1988-1990 by Carolyn Cain, President, 1988-1990 WEMA's fifth decade began in 1988 with membership at an all time high of 750. Under the leadership of Carolyn Cain, WEMA's first woman President, the association developed a strategic plan, with a mission statement, goals, and yearly action plans. Members helped lobby Wisconsin legislators to garner more funds for school media centers, against cost controls for schools, and for an exemption for libraries in the new obscenity bill. Another successful Wisconsin Study Tour was led by Ralph Whiting, and Co-chairs Vonna Pitel and Anne Wolter led WEMA's efforts to promote the new AASL/AECT national guidelines entitled Information Power. The theme of the spring conference in 1989 was "Curriculum: the Main Event" and featured Mike Eisenberg as keynoter. A record attendance of over 500 people filled the Chula Vista conference center in Wisconsin Dells. "Converging on 2000Leading the Future" was the theme of the 1990 spring conference in Oconomowoc when Jim Klein took over as president. The Wisconsin Advantage was promoted during the spring and WEMA sold over 1,000 computers in this program, which included training for educators as well as good discounts. Thanks to the diligent work of treasurer Mary Klein and President Jim, WEMA netted nearly $50,000 from the project.

    PROMOTING TO SCHOOLS
Teachers want their students to return in the fall with their reading skills intact or improved. They are your natural allies as you work on attracting children to reading programs at the public library. Enlist their natural support with promotion in as many ways as possible.
    School Visits
One of the best ways to promote library programs and good school/public library relations is to arrange to visit all, or as many as you can, of the elementary/middle schools in your area. If you are targeting young adults, consider sending information to be put on daily announcements. Once you've scheduled your programs and have promotional materials in hand, contact the school district's administrative office and the administrative offices of all public, parochial and private schools. Ask permission to promote the library program in each elementary school in the library's service area. Then schedule individual visits during the last few weeks of classes through principals, teachers, or school librarians. Try making a visual impact by wearing something related to the theme. Give students information about the program to take home and make sure posters will be prominently displayed at the school. Glean ideas from promotional book talks from

CDC awards funds to universities for research on how to prevent disease and injuries
As part of its new strategy to strengthen and expand the nation's public health research programs at universities, CDC announced today grants of $12.5 million to fund 50 research projects at academic health centers, research centers and university-affiliated programs across the country. The funding is part of CDC's Prevention Research Initiative, an effort to link the talents and skills of university-based scientists with the resources of health departments, community-based programs, and national organizations. "The awards ensure that public health research activities address problems affecting the nation's communities," says Dr. Jeffrey P. Koplan, director of the CDC. "The grants will help CDC and its partners conduct research that can directly improve community health and reduce the need for medical care." The grants cover a range of subjects, including prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, asthma, genetics and home, workplace and recreational injuries. (See complete list attached.) Activities include centers of excellence in prevention research, research projects to inform public policy, and research investigator training and development. The average grant is approximately $250,000. Most projects are funded for three years.
