http://www.itl.mu.edu/warp7/pages/root/charter
Charter schools in Wisconsin continue to be a growing force in providing quality options for families. Since the charter school law passed in 1993, the number of charter schools across the state has grown rapidly, with just under 100 schools in the 2000-2001 school year.
Charter schools are "no excuses" public schools that agree to be held accountable for student results in exchange for waivers from most rules and regulations governing public schools in Wisconsin. Accountability is defined in the charter school contract between the authorizer and the school community.
Wisconsin provides an interesting laboratory for the various kinds of charter school laws commonly passed by state legislatures. Outside of Milwaukee and Racine, charter schools are sponsored by the school board. However, in Milwaukee and Racine, the state legislature has authorized other entities to sponsor charter schools.
In Milwaukee, in addition to the school board, the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and the Milwaukee Area Technical College can sponsor schools. Three of the four sponsors are actively taking applications. MATC currently does not have an application process.
Recently, Wisconsin's state legislature expanded alternate sponsorship to Racine, allowing one charter school to be sponsored by UW-Parkside.

Reciprocity is the agreement that Minnesota has with neighboring states to provide lower tuition for attending public colleges and universities in those states. Minnesota has reciprocity agreements with Wisconsin, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Are Part-Time Students Covered in the Agreements? The programs with Wisconsin, North Dakota, and South Dakota cover virtually all students - full-time, part-time, undergraduate, graduate, and professional. Who's Eligible for Tuition Reciprocity Benefits? If you're a Minnesota resident, you're eligible for reciprocity benefits if you attend any Wisconsin technical college, or any two- or four-year public college or university in Wisconsin. If you're a Wisconsin resident, you're eligible if you attend any Minnesota public institution. Is There Anyone Who Isn't Eligible?

Schools Going Solar E-Newsletters March in Review Schools Going Solar E-News Report from the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) National Convention The NSTA's annual national convention just wrapped up over this last weekend. This year's event, held in the massive Philadelphia Conference Center, was lively and educational. Thousands of science teachers from all over the country (and some international) converged on Philadelphia to network, share information, attend numerous workshops, and visit the extensive exhibit area. DOE's EnergySmart Schools Program had an exhibit booth in which other organizations, including IREC's Schools Going Solar Clearinghouse and the National Energy Education Development Project, distributed materials, discussed energy and answered the questions of many attendees. NEED also ran several half day workshops, and NEED, EnergySmart Schools and IREC conducted a one-hour workshop on "Making Schools Energy Smart." It is inspiring to see the enthusiasm and dedication of these teachers! All of us involved in schools programs are eager to assist those teachers who teach about energy, and could use materials and information to do this.
