    WISCONSIN Most Significant Reforms
    • Strong market-based accountability system Academic subject majors are required of secondary teachers.
    Recent Developments
    • TEACHERS' OPINION SURVEY OF PRINCIPALS POSTED ON WEB (May 30, 2002) What do Milwaukee Public Schools teachers think of their principals? The Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association surveyed 3,000 teachers and published the results on their website. The principals were not amused. The executive director of the principals’ union, the Administrators and Supervisors Council, said, “Our organization remains disappointed by the actual survey and by the decision to publish the survey. We feel that this action was not conducive to a healthy school environment, and we hope that it won’t be repeated. The results themselves are at best highly suspect.” Concepts such as “transparency,” “testing,” “survey,” or “public scrutiny,” are the lifeblood of reform. NCTQ wants more, not less, of them.

WTCS: Positive Impact on Economic Development
MADISON - Dr. Richard Carpenter, president of the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS), praised the Governor’s 2003-05 biennial budget presented February 18, 2003. The proposal maintains state aid used by 16 local technical colleges serving 463,000 Wisconsin adults and assigns a high priority for nursing, firefighter and emergency medical technician (EMT) programs. “We are gratified that the Governor’s budget recognizes the unique and vital role fulfilled by Wisconsin’s technical colleges,” says Carpenter. “By providing the training that workers need to get high skill and high wage jobs, the WTCS can help stimulate quick economic recovery in a way no other Wisconsin educational institution can.” Read more...
