Women in Military at Crossroads without Signposts Run Date: 08/11/02 By Nancy Cook Lauer
WEnews correspondent Advancement for women in the military may be stalled. The committee in charge of looking out for them has not met in more than a year and new regulations worry women's rights activists. TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WOMENSENEWS)The military planes buzzing over her Columbus, Miss., home as she was growing up provided all the inspiration Lisa Gerlt needed to focus her career plan. She was going to be a fighter pilot. That was 16 years ago, before women were allowed to become aviators in the armed services. As soon as she was old enough, Gerlt enlisted anyway, and now the 34-year-old master sergeant says the U.S. Air Force treats women just fine. She never did get back to that aviator training she had her eye on early in her career, even after the Department of Defense decreed in 1994 that women could become fighter pilots. "I knew before I graduated from high school that that was what I wanted to do. I never had any other desire," Gerlt said. "I was very naive. It could have been possible, I guess, if I had driven myself more. Lots of women do it and I admire them, but once I got in, I just wanted to do what they felt I was best for." Today the more than 200,000 women in the military make up 15 percent of all service people, and they are beginning to creep into the upper ranks, with more than a dozen captaining naval ships and scores flying bombers.

Women In Military Service For America Memorial Arlington, Virginia This memorial literally and figuratively brings light to the untold story of the achievements of servicewomen throughout American history. The dominant feature of the memorial is a 225-foot semicircular glass belvedere that holds large glass tablets inscribed with quotes by and about the women who have served in the military. The 37,000 square-foot education center is carved into the hillside of Arlington National Cemetery and concealed behind the unfinished, 30-foot-high, neoclassical hemicycle designed in 1927 by McKim Mead and White to be the ceremonial gateway to the cemetery.

Women Deserve Equal Pay Washington Report Fall 2000 Congressman Tom Lantos has expressed strong support for legislation intended to bring greater progress in assuring that women receive equal pay for equal work. When the Equal Pay Act was signed by President John F. Kennedy in 1963, women earned an average of 61 cents for every dollar earned by men. Today, a third of a century later, women still earn only about 75 cents for every dollar earned by men. Our own state of California is only slightly better than the national average with women earning about 76 cents for every dollar earned by men.
Congressman Lantos said, "The gender gap in wages is one of the most pressing issues facing American families, our national economy, and women workers in particular. Women often provide a significant part of their families' income, and in many cases they are the sole family wage-earner. Lower pay for women requires them to spend longer time away from their families to earn the same as a male coworker, and lower pay means lower pensions when women retire. All of this translates into discrimination and disadvantage for women. That is the reason I strongly support the Paycheck Fairness Act."
The Paycheck Fairness Act would strengthen the Equal Pay Act to provide more effective remedies to women who are not being paid equal wages for doing equal work, and it would place gender on the same legal footing as race or ethnicity in dealing with wage discrimination. The legislation would help by prohibiting employers from penalizing workers for sharing salary information with coworkers. The legislation would provide for compensatory and punitive damages for gender discrimination in wages.

Washington, DC MRCE prepared protective procedures and methods for preliminary designs for a structure to be built inside the National Park Service's Hemicycle at the west end of Memorial Drive in Arlington Cemetery. MRCE's main task was to preserve the historic Hemicycle structure adjacent to the memorial site. Services included geotechnical studies, recommendations for foundations, design of underpinning to facilitate elevator construction within the Hemicycle, and inspection of geotechnical related construction. MRCE investigated the waterproofing problems of the Hemicycle structure and recommended remedial actions. We also investigated subsurface conditions, which include subsurface strata and groundwater conditions surrounding the Hemicycle structure, and recommended the excavation depth and support, waterproofing for the underground structure, and foundation bearing materials.

Thursday, September 24, 1998 Women were vital to military success in war By CAROL SMITH
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER A small loophole in Navy regulations changed the course of history for American women. "Is there any regulation which specifies that a Navy yeoman be a man?" Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels asked in 1917. With that question, he solved an emerging manpower crisis as America readied itself for war, and he also made military history, said Lettie Gavin, Seattle author of "American Women in World War I: They Also Served," (University Press of Colorado, 295 pages, $29.95). Gavin, a retired former editor for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, spent several years racing to track down stories of WWI women before they all passed away. Many of those stories are captured in her book, which is going into its third printing. The women were critical to the success of the military's operation in Europe.

      Honoring American Women of War
Gail Russell Chaddock, Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor WASHINGTON Washington's newest monument is nothing like its closest neighbor, the supremely heroic Iwo Jima Marine memorial, which marks the toughest battle in the 222-year history of the Corps. GRAND MONUMENT: The Women in Military Service for America Memorial, which marks women in all of the nation's wars, is a place of glass, fountains, and light. Glass panels to the left contain the stories of women in wartime.
(CLAIRE ROSEBUSH) Nor is it like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial across the Potomac, where names on black marble slabs descending into the ground mark individual sacrifice - reverently, soberly. The Women in Military Service for America Memorial is a place of glass, fountains, and light. It marks the quiet, critical contributions of some 1.8 million women in all of the nation's wars. "When I served in the Navy, women were not even allowed to vote," said Frieda Mae Greene Hardin, who joined the Navy in 1918. Some 12,500 other women enlisted in World War I. Such a monument to women is "long overdue," she told tens of thousands of servicewomen, family, and friends at Saturday's dedication. "In my 101 years of living, I have observed many wonderful achievements, but none as important as the process of women taking their rightful place in society," she added.

Summer '99 - Women In Military Service For America Memorial by : Bell J. Moore Re-live the past, experience the present, and envision the future of America's servicewomen. This memorial honors those women who have served with and in the US Armed Forces starting with the American Revolution through to the present day. As you enter the Exhibit Gallery, look upward to the skylights. As the sun passes overhead, quotations etched on the skylights project shadows onto the magnificent arc of Imperial Danby marble. The fountain and reflecting pool located in the front of the Memorial bring together light and water symbolizing life. The women's "voices" are not only captured in the arc of quotations etched into glass tablets, but also through the sound and movement of water. This Memorial stands in lasting recognition of all women who have served, are serving, and will serve in our nation's defense. This memorial can be seen at Arlington Cemetery in Virginia.

Text: DoD Announces New, Enhanced Role for Women in Military
Following is the DoD text: (begin text) The Department of Defense announced today a new and enhanced role for the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Service (DACOWITS), which will be revitalized in an effort to make it more relevant, efficient and effective. The 53 year-old charter under which DACOWITS operated focused on attracting more women to military service. Today's military, with more than 200,000 women currently on active duty, bears little resemblance to that of 1951. Accordingly, the Defense Department has developed an improved charter to better address the needs of women in the military and their professional development. The committee's new charter will also broaden its focus to include improving conditions for those who serve and their families, whose sacrifices are yet another form of service to the nation. The revised charter sets a priority on recruiting and retaining highly qualified professional women while considering the treatment, employment, integration, and well being of women service members. The new charter is on the web at http://www.dtic.mil/dacowits/charter.html
