Women's Gains In The Struggle For Equality Angolan women participated, side by side with men, in the struggle for Independence, and are also playing a key role in the search for a lasting peace and consolidated democracy for the country. After Independence, the Constitution enshrined equality of the sexes before the law; with this legal instrument, women stepped up their battle for "a place in the sun." Little by little the myth according to which women had to stay at home to carry out their "natural mission" of raising children, bearing children, and serving as an instrument of pleasure. Albeit in small numbers, women began to be seen in some professions hitherto deemed "male," as they dared to enter careers such as pilot, breaking down barriers, taboos, and prejudices. Yet women's limited education has stood in the way, as we embark upon this "war" with the major handicap of not having a level of education needed to qualify for mid- or upper-level professional and technical courses, to meet qualification requirements for placement in certain positions. Statistics indicate that as of 1992 54% of the women in Luanda were illiterate, as compared to 31.4% of men. Only 2.5% had continued their studies beyond the 10th grade, as compared to 7% of men.

Women Studies Minor
Feminism provides the conceptual basis for the Women Studies program minor and Women Studies courses. Feminism is defined as the awareness that women as a group are systematically subordinated; the understanding that the oppression of women is linked to other forms of oppression; and the commitment to work actively to transform gender-based and related hierarchies. Feminism challenges patriarchal viewpoints, theories, categories, understandings, and interpretations, and their resulting power relationships. Feminism appreciates women's empowerment from various locations, and understands the mutual interdependence of women globally.
Minor Requirements The minor includes five core courses and additional electives for a total of 30 credits. Courses not listed as Women Studies courses may be substituted at the discretion of the Director. In order to count towards the minor, a course should focus primarily on women and/or women's experiences and conform to the Women's Studies Mission Statement. Students are expected to earn at least a C+ in courses counting toward the minor. Students may design a student/faculty designed major though the College of Arts and Sciences. Close advisement is recommended, as new courses may apply to this minor.

CatalanWomen Write Back: Contemporary Irish and Catalan Short Stories
Irene Boada-Montagut, University of Ulster, Derry
Women Write Back also explores the subordinate position of Ireland and Catalonia historically in relation to the metropolitan powers of Britain and Spain respectively. The cultural implications of the colonial connection are considered from the viewpoint of women and men. The study breaks new ground in placing Ireland and Catalonia within the same comparative framework. There are of course differences between the two societies: the languages and geographical settings are far removed, for instance. But, on closer analysis, it is the similarities which predominate. Both are post-colonial societies, the status of women in many respects is comparable; issues of identity and language are to the forefront of consciousness and national debate. In this book feminist theorising and post-colonial discourses are fruitfully brought to bear on the literary creations of Irish and Catalan short story writers, in what might be described also as an exercise in literary decolonisation.

Dissertation: Just Debate: Culture and Womens Rights in the New South Africa directed by Professor David Plotke (chair), Professor Aristide Zolberg, Professor Nancy Fraser and Assistant Professor Mala Htun.
Abstract: Does support for womens rights increase as deliberation becomes more open and inclusive? To answer this question I compare three periods in South Africa during the 1990s to examine how, to what extent, and under what conditions deliberation fueled popular support for gender reform.
