WOODWIND
INSTRUMENTS Woodwind instruments are not necessarily make of wood, many of them, like the saxophone, being metal, but they do require wind to make a sound. They consist basically of a tube, usually with a series of holes. Air is blown into the top of the tube, either across a hole or past a flexible reed. This makes the air inside the tube vibrate and give out a note. The pitch of the note depends on the length of the tube, a shorter tube giving a higher note, and also on which holes are covered. Blowing harder makes the sound louder. KEYS AND CURVES To produce deep notes, woodwind instruments have to be quite long. The tube is therefor curved so that the player can hold the instrument, as in this alto saxophone. Keys allow the fingers to open and close holes all along the instrument. ALL HOLES COVERED
Covering all seven holes in a simple pipe makes the air in the whole tube vibrate, giving the note middle C.
FIRST THREE HOLES COVERED
This shortens the vibrating air column to two-thirds of the tube, giving the higher note G.

At present the marching membership consists of around 16 to 25 playing members, with instruments ranging from Percussion through to Saxophones and Trumpets. The main uniform is a copy of the 1994 epic film about the "Three Musketeers", with the second being based on Alexandre Dumas" novel of the legendary heroes. Since 1981 the band have grown from strength to strength claiming most titles available. The most notable being crowned not once, but a historic, record three times Isle of Man World Champions Although all our members are Amateur, they try to maintain a very professional attitude. Woodwind Instruments in the Castle Museum, York Late C18 Boxwood Clarinets, one showing advances in mechanisation. Acoustics It is a common mistake to suppose that wind instruments require vast amounts of air. In fact, comparatively little air passes through an instrument: most of it goes to waste. Acoustically, its only function is to energise the air already in the instrument into the rapid vibrations which we recognise as musical sound, and in theory it would be better disposed of elsewhere. The simple act of blowing into an instrument will not produce a musical sound. A regular air stream cannot pulsate the air inside. The agent which does is called the generator , and wind instruments employ three broad types: Lip activated generator - air escapes intermittently through a narrow aperture between the player's lips, muscularly sprung to act as a resistive valve. This causes the lips to vibrate, as in the blown 'raspberry' or 'bronx cheer'. This type of generator is associated with instruments loosely called 'brass'. The mouthpiece of a brass instrument is not, strictly speaking, a generator, but a lip support. Reed generator - the narrow aperture is between two springy blades of vegetable tissue, plastic or metal (double reed) or one blade and a rigid surface (single reed). The oboe and bassoon have double reeds, the clarinet and saxophone, single reeds. The 'squeakers' children make from grass blades or plant stems are homely examples of either type.

Ceramic Woodwind Instruments
Translated by Satoshi Kanesaka, Torrence, California
[The following article first appeared in the Japanese magazine Pipers, July 1989, p. 6, and is reprinted here with the kind permission of the editor, Mr. M. Sugihara.]
Ceramic . It means pottery. According to the dictionary, it means, "Of or relating to the manufacture of any product made essentially from a nonmetallic mineral by firing at a high temperature: of or relating to such a product" (Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary). Comparing it with traditional ceramics as defined above, "fine" ceramic is coming more into use in various fields. This is a product made from artificial materials to achieve its required functions in each application. We see these types of fine ceramic in daily products such as kitchen knives, integrated circuit substances, cutting tools, etc.
There was an exposition called the Nagoya Design Expo in '89 at Nagoya, Japan. The local government had a booth showing products of the twenty-first century, and their staff worked with ceramic manufacturers with the idea of playing orchestral music with ceramic-made musical instruments. Woodwinds and violins were made by a company called INAX Corporation.
Fine ceramic is known as a very hard material; however, material used for this experiment is called MACHINAX (machinable ceramics), which is soft enough for machining operations. It can be machined just like wood, fairly easily. INAX made a flute, an oboe, a clarinet, a bassoon, and a violin.

BLOWN-WOODWIND INSTRUMENTS Blown-woodwind instruments produce sound by blowing to vibrate the tube and reeds of the instruments. The tone produced depends on the strength of the wind. Different strengths can produce pitches that differ by a perfect fifth or an octave. Its origin can be traced back to BC 1100, the Shang Dynasty, when there were Xun, He (Sheng), and Yan (Da Xiao) etc. The more popular wind instruments include Sheng, Suona, Di and Xiao. Dizi (Di, Transverse Flute) Range: d2 - g4 (G key type) Early in the reign of Emperor Wudi (141-88 BC) of the Han dynasty, the di flute was introduced to China from westrrn areas. nto china and standardised in construction through revisions. But broadly speaking, such features as its bamboo make, edged tone and side-holes have given the evidence of its existence in the ensembles of the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). Archaeological finds revealed one of the earliest type of flute unearthed from a tomb in Hubei province. It had a very similiar construction as a modern bamboo type, only without the hole for membrane. Despite these old flutes being 8000 years old, they can still be played.

The EMI Bookstore : Books on musical instruments from Amazon.com and other sources ... selected, critiqued and made available here through the Experimental Musical Instruments web site This page contains detail information for ... Woodwind Instruments from PVC Guidelines for Constructing Experimental Instruments from PVC Pipe and Related Materials, by John Edfors Stranger Creek Productions, 1996. Paperback, spiral bound; 5.5" x 8.5", 80 pages, illustrated with diagrams and some photos. Not available from EMI or Amazon.com. Contact Stranger Creek Productions, 4671 Lyons Hill, Springdale, WA 99173. Price $12.00. The following review originally appeared in EMI Volume 13 #1. John Edfors' book of PVC woodwinds is not just about drilling a bunch of holes in a tube. Even though the central subject matter is inexpensive plastics, the book brings a serious woodwind-maker's sophistication to its topic. Woodwind Instruments from PVC opens with several sections providing broadly applicable information on woodwind design. Here can be found information on key and pad design, raised plateaus around toneholes, bore shaping and the like. This is accompanied by information on working and finishing PVC and ABS plastics. Thus, the book offers practical design information for any aspiring woodwind maker, whether or not his or her chosen material is PVC, and at the same time provides useful information for any instrument maker working in PVC, whether or not his or her chosen instrument type is woodwinds.

Cornelis Nederveens' work has been extremely influential in the development of mathematical approaches to woodwind acoustics. This book originally appeared as a Ph.D. thesis in 1969. The 1998 edition is updated with about 30 pages of new addenda. The core topic here is tuning, as Nederveen elucidates the factors that determine the fundamental pitch and overtone recipes for woodwinds with various bore shapes, various configurations of open and closed toneholes, and so forth. The discussion is entirely mathematical and demands advanced math skills. English is not Nederveen's first language, and as a result the writing is a bit stiff.
