Quick menu , for those who don't want to read the introductory comments (again). I prefer the most rigorous classicism, so if you're looking for something else, this isn't the place. These lists represent varying degrees of depth, with regard to the number of examples given and the distinctions made; the level will become clear from the texts themselves. Here are the topics, some contain sub-lists, others don't: Appendix on how to buy the recordings mentioned in this list List of recently modified files When I first wrote these lists as purely text documents in 1991, with the exception of some Indian music, there were precisely zero other resources available. That had a definite impact on the level of detail I chose, and while there is some incentive to add material of a more technical nature in subsidiary documents, I have not done so yet. Experts are not likely to find my discussions informative, except perhaps with regard to the existence of particular recordings. My goal was and is to attempt to convey some sense of what I personally enjoy about the music, and ultimately to entice people to make their own judgements from live or recorded music rather than getting too deeply involved in text. http://www.ci.chi.il.us/WorldMusic/
World Music Festival Chicago 2002, presented September 20 - 29, was the best one yet. From an artistic perspective, this was our biggest success. Musicians from over 25 countries some travelling from far-away places like Niger, Turkey, Brazil and Poland performed over the course of the 10-day festival. Attendance was higher than previous years. Many of our venues sold out their shows and, in some cases, there were lines around the block to enter. It was an incredible feeling to see so many World Music venues filled with people. We would like to thank everyone who helped make this year's festival a huge success! Without the support of our sponsors, partners, colleagues and the audience, this festival would not have been possible. The following editorial, published in the Chicago Sun-Times on September 30, captured the significance of World Music Festival 2002 and the impact it had on this city. A Little World Harmony
A year ago, Chicago's World Music Festival, like so many events and institutions in the wake of 9/11, suffered critical blows. Many of its top attractions canceled. Attendance, along with the overall mood, was down. But re-equipped with a full contingent of important artists from around the globe, the fest, which concluded Sunday, bounced back. During its 10-day run at various venues around the town, it again made the world seem a little smaller, spreading the special joy that arises from promoting understanding among cultures. If only nations could get along as well as they did here during the last week and a half. If only differences could always translate as readily into shared values. There is no other festival like this. The Department of Cultural Affairs deserves heaps of credit for making it a priority event.

The Archive of World Music is a special collection established in 1976 by Professor John Ward, which was eventually transferred as a gift to the Eda Kuhn Loeb Music Library at Harvard University. It is devoted to the acquisition of archival field recordings of musics world-wide as well as to commercial sound recordings, videos, and DVDs of ethnomusicological interest. Whereas the content of the Archive continues to develop with a special emphasis on Asia and the Middle East, it is currently in the position to further develop the collection with recordings from Mexico, Central and South America, as well as from all around the globe. Substantial holdings of Anglo-American ballads and songs are also notable. The Seeger Room, the ethnomusicology reading room in the Music Library, contains reference materials and monographs relevant to the study of much of the music collected in the Archive. Dedicated to the work of Charles Seeger, it is also a gift of Professor John Ward.

The World Music Archives
The World Music Archives began as Prof. Emeritus David McAllester's personal collection of Comanche and Navajo music, recorded in 1940 and 1950, respectively. It was first used in teaching at Wesleyan in 1953. As the World Music Program developed, the collection grew rapidly in both size and scope. Scholars and graduate students, here and elsewhere, contributed materials used in their research, expanding the collection into new areas. Added to these were many recordings of local performances, lectures, etc., by visiting artists. Today the Archives contains well over 3000 original audio tapes (reel-to-reel tapes, cassettes, digital audio tapes, and digitally-recorded betamax), approximately 700 discs (primarily 78 rpm commercial discs, but also a number of instantaneous disc records), and 100 videotapes in numerous formats, plus three four-drawer filing cabinets of accompanying notes, texts, and indexes. Wesleyan is extremely fortunate to have Dr. McAllester's Navajo collection, the largest in the world, which includes eight different versions of Blessingway, two of Shootingway (among other ceremonies), each with hundreds of songs. Other important collections in the Archives include the only recordings in the United States of the Ulahingan, an epic of the Bagobo people in the Philippines; important collections of Iranian, Japanese, Spanish, Shetland Islands, Greek, Rhodesian (now Zimbabwe) mbira music, and North Indian (Hindustani); and exceptional collections of Indonesian and South Indian (Karnatak) music, two specialties of the world music program at Wesleyan.
