It is a well known fact that writers write some of their best works when depressed, moody, and poor. The reasons for this are essentially that if someone is happy and basically well off then they really don't have much to write about. Most writing about nice things is rather banal. Examples of "nice-writing" could be Shakespeare's sonnets. Lots of roses and summer's days for example. Most modern reviewers criticize Shakespeare's poetry for not having a part for the "Arnold Schwarzenegger character." This happy-factor was the basis the of the holiday/prison camp called "Writers' Block." In Writers' Block meals were bread and water, cable TV was rationed to one hour a day, people were locked up in rooms with nothing but paper and pencils (the pencils had rubber leads so writers couldn't hurt themselves), and visitors had to see the inmates through bullet proof glass. The fees for this place were very high, as you would expect for the best of health farms, but it produced some of the best novels of the Pinta Beer Era.

    92. Is It Writers' Block?
Most writers get a feel for the idea percolation process, but it's a subtle distinctionand hard to distinguish through a haze of writer's block panic.
    http://www.sff.net/People/LisaRC/isit.htm
    Is it REALLY writer's block?
If you're reading this, you probably think you have writer's block. You want to write but you can't. You have this piece you desperately want to get out, but, every time you sit down to it, you totally freeze. Or you can only write crap. Or you never seem to sit down to it at all because there's always a kitchen to tidy or a call you have to make and then the kids come home or you're too tired and somehow, you just never make it to the keyboard. Or maybe you're the opposite you've always been prolific, churning out one piece after another but now, just at the point where everything should be flowing smoothly, it seems as though the well has dried right up. Well, it's possible that you have writer's block. It's also possible that you don't. There are things that can stop you from writing that have nothing to do with writing, and all the advice and analysis and writing exercises in the world aren't going to help. Before you frustrate the hell out of yourself, consider whether one of the following might account for why you're not writing: NO TIME This is a pretty obvious reason not to be writing, but one that is most often pooh-poohed as not being good enough. Rather than just whupping your limp carcass to sit upright in front of that monitor and create, dammit!, try a more strategic approach.

    Writers' Block
A bright workspace for free agents. From: Issue 40 November 2000, Page 88 By: Matt Villano Photographs by: Doug Fogelson After nine years of working from a tiny desk in the corner of his tiny apartment in midtown Manhattan, freelance writer Phil Scott knew that he needed to get a life. He spent whole days without seeing another living soul, weeks without doing in-person interviews, and months without exchanging ideas with his professional colleagues. "I was a hermit in one of the most populous cities in the world," he says. "Writing is supposed to be creative, but because of my solitude, my situation was a total drag." Then Scott, 39, discovered 72 Mad, an airy, bright, and sometimes raucous workspace for free agents that is located on the 12th floor of a former sweatshop on Madison Avenue. The commune, as some call it, was founded in 1997 by Basia Hellwig, 48, and Anne Mollegen Smith, 54, magazine editors who now run Qwerty Communications Inc., a publishing consultancy. Hellwig and Smith lease the entire floor of the building and parcel out individual spaces to freelancers like Scott and 24 other tenants, most of whom are writers, editors, designers, and consultants. "We wanted to create a loose-knit community for creative people that was professional but not stuffy," says Hellwig. Good-natured chaos is more like it. At 2 PM, some colleagues take a break and play a game of Nerf Ball. And Fridays at 4 PM, everyone gathers for swing-dancing lessons.
