THE THREE ACTS: MAJOR TURNING POINTS
c. 2002 by Alicia Rasley
A plot is a sequence of events selected to show the journey through the story. These events are causally related (that is, one causes the next) and reflect the motivations, choices, and actions of the protagonist primarily and other characters too. Events are showcased within scene, which are more or less real-time narratives chronicling the experience of the characters. Each scene should have at least one event that
irrevocably changes the course of the plot, through a revelation, choice, action, experience, disaster, damage.
And what's an event ? An event is something that happens– not a dream, not a flashback, not a passage of introspection. A character is doing something, experiencing something, not just in her own mind, but in the external reality of the story. That can mean she's taking an action, discovering a secret, encountering another character, having a conversation, creating something new, surmounting a trauma, lying, committing a crime, telling the truth... something that has an effect.
Events are important because they are concrete and real and have consequences. Most important, they have

Biff gives Letterman a funnybones boost
January 31, 2003 BY DIANE HOLLOWAY
COX NEWS SERVICE Biff Henderson's evolution from stage manager to star began one morning in 1980, when David Letterman was in the midst of his own transformation from wise-cracking comic to talk show host. NBC had the gap-toothed guy, a favorite guest on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show," hosting a morning variety show, which was a strange place for Letterman's late-night sense of humor. (This was the show on which Letterman set fire to the stage.) Henderson was stage managing in the wings when Letterman, on his way to do the monologue, suddenly pushed the startled stage manager toward the spotlight. Unflappable even back then, Henderson was heading for his mark to do a joke when Letterman shoved him aside at the last minute. "No, I wasn't nervous," Henderson says recently from the green room of CBS's "The Late Show with David Letterman." "There's nothing to be afraid of when you don't know what you're doing." Three series on two networks later, Biff and Dave are still together, and Biff's sojourns into the spotlight have become more frequent and more popular. Henderson receives lots of fan mail and has his own Web site

Donald Maass, Literary Agent
An independent New York literary agent with eighteen years of experience, Donald Maass is the founder and president of the Donald Maass Literary Agency, which represents over 100 novelists, including such award-winning authors as mystery writer Anne Perry, science fiction writer Christopher Priest, cartoonist Chris Browne ( Hägar the Horrible ) and the estate of Pulitzer Prize winner MacKinlay Kantor ( Andersonville Mr. Maass is himself the author of fourteen pseudonymous novels, including four Nancy Drew mysteries. He has also written The Career Novelist: A Literary Agent Offers Strategies for Success . He is a member of: The Author's Guild, Mystery Writers of America, Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, Horror Writers of America, Women Writing the West, and is Vice-President of the literary branch of the Association of Authors' Representatives. The questions below were submitted by various members of the Internet Chapter (IC). IC:   Do you handle paperback originals? DM:   Yes. Original paperback publication has long been common in the romance, science fiction and western fields. In recent years, some authors in the mystery field have also made successful starts in paperback. Original paperback is not for everyone, though. Mainstream and literary fiction, which depend heavily on reviews, probably need the added boost of hardcover.

By: Danny Russell With hunting season winding down nearly everyone's thoughts turns to fishing. A cold, rainy afternoon is the perfect excuse to sit by the fire and read a good fishing book. My friend Greg , who shares a hunting camp with me, can tell you I've spent many a hour in the deer stand and in the hunting camp reading fishin' books and magazines. Reading about new concepts and products (mostly in magazines) is a good way to keep updated on all the latest in fish catching news. But, there are several old , not so new, and newer books available that have a wealth of information. Here is a list of books, that I've read, that you can certainly learn from. OLD BOOK Complete Book of Bass Fishing - by Grits Gresham Grits Gresham is probably one of the best known outdoor writers, having written for nearly every major outdoor magazine. He is also a graduate of L.S.U. and has worked for the La. Wildlife and Fisheries. Written in the "60's , you'll find it interesting to see pictures of some of the old equipment and lures. Also some of the concepts have changed, as well as the techniques. BUT there is still some good information that has been forgotten and still applies for todays and tomorrows fishing conditions. This book is sort of a history book with good information about fishing that gives you a good idea how far fishing has come in the last 30 yrs. NOT SO NEW BOOKS -Hook, Line and Sinker

Cook book with a happy ending
March 16, 2003 BY JAY MARIOTTI SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST
The last time Brian Cook saw his father was on Thanksgiving break. They talked for about 15 minutes, a marathon compared to the years when they couldn't possibly converse, when Dad was so tormented by paranoid schizophrenia that he beat his wife, lost his way and became the most famous street wanderer in Lincoln, Ill. Difference now is, Norm Cook's son is among the acclaimed stars of March Madness, the leader of an Illinois team whose arrow is pointing upward at the perfect time. Soon he'll be taken in the first round of the NBA draft and become financially secure, just as his father had assumed about himself when he was drafted in the first round by the Boston Celtics in 1978. The symmetry is eerily bittersweet and Norman always will be fighting his mental disorder, but the good news is, at least they have the makings of a relationship at a time in life when a son can be more understanding. ''He told me he watches all our games on TV. He tries to give me tips,'' said Brian, smiling while relating the story in the Illini locker room Saturday. ''He's my father, I still love him. I know if it wasn't for his mental illness, he'd be around.''

One question did pop up while your humble scribes were bronzing on the white sand beaches of the 5-0: How do the Lords of the Gridiron select the cheerleaders who go to the Pro Bowl? Just when the college basketball junkie thought he had everything, ESPN once again tells us that this not so. ESPN has teamed up with Raycom and the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association to bring us the Great Eight Basketball tourney on Nov. 29 and 30. Teams are guaranteed $100,000 plus expenses and a donation to the school's Challenging Athletes' Minds for Personal Success program. Welcome to the EMILE GRIFFITH wing! CLICK ON THE IMAGE FOR A LARGER VIEW! This section is dedicated to a SIX-TIME WORLD CHAMPION. A man who fought his way to the top of his game, meeting all challengers and contenders en route to becoming one of boxings' elite; a TRUE multi-champion. New York City's adopted son honed his craft at St. Nicks Arena and became a fixture at Madison Square Garden fighting more main events in the Garden than any other headliner in history. Turning pro in 1958, he went on to simultaneously hold both the World Welterweight and Middleweight crown in 1966. Unknown to most, Emile Alphonse Griffith holds one of boxings' unbreakable records. He has fought more title fight rounds (339) than any other world champion in history. This includes all-time greats Abe Attell (337), Sugar Ray Robinson (288) and Muhammad Ali (270). The bible of boxing magazines "The RING" (no affiliation with this website) has included Emile Griffith in their pages many times throughout his career and he still makes appearances from time to time. But his first "guestshot" in this prestigious periodical occurred in the August 1958 issue. Hidden away on page 32 in "Seen & Heard in N.Y." is the following line referring to his pro debut at St. Nicholas Arena on June 2, 1958; "The 1958 National Golden Gloves welterweight champion, Emile Griffith, 157, West Side, celebrated his professional debut by out-pointing Joe Parham, 162, Paterson N.J. in the opening four."

And since Grange, the growth and development of that game have been generated in large part by successive All-Pro athletes gifted with far-reaching individual brilliance. The exploits and significance of many of these transcendent athletes are in this chapter set down variously: as essays, personality profiles or interviews.
1. Red Grange, Galloping Ghost
In the Roaring Twenties, Red Grange changed the future of spectator sports in America. The most celebrated football player of the twentieth century, the most influential, the most popular in his own time, and perhaps the most controversial, was Harold (Red) Grange, a 1920s University of Illinois All-American halfback. A year later, Grange, known as the Galloping Ghost, parlayed the drama of his college life into his most historic achievement: putting the National Football League on the map. Before Grange turned pro, the NFL was a back-page item in the newspapers, literally, and a financial failure at the gate. With its unique new star, the league became an overnight success.

Non-Fiction Writers Profit From Collaboration
d>Robin Rapport earned degrees in both visual and performing arts and cultural anthropology at Syracuse University, and then went on to earn a graduate degree in media ecology from New York University. "I wasn't able to put in it words at the time," she says, "but what I was really interested in was ways of communicating." After working as a director in New York, Rapport realized that writing was the way in which she wanted to communicate and that writing and the performing arts share a common goal. "I look at who my audience is," she says, "just the way an actor or director would." Having built a career, and then a business, on her writing skills, Rapport is set to take over the presidency of the Professional Writers Alliance (PWA), a Mercer County-based organization of working non-fiction writers. A founder of the five-year-old group, Rapport takes over the reins from Robin Levinson, a co-founder, who has led the group from its inception.
