"Earthquakes in Wyoming" Running time : 60 minutes. Cost : $14.95 + 6% tax + $3.00 shipping and handling. Believe it or not, the potential for earthquakes in Wyoming are great. Wyoming has had its share of killer earthquakes. In 1959, a quake rattled an area near Yellowstone National Park, killing 28 people. During this quake, rescue efforts were hampered because the earth was shook so hard and fast, that there was little time to help people who eventually perished from the massive landslides. The award winning, "Earthquakes in Wyoming" examines the potential for more earthquakes in the Cowboy state, and explains what regions are considered a serious hazard. This hour-long program also looks at the source of earthquake activity. Although earthquakes have occurred mainly in the western third of Wyoming, every county has experienced quakes dating back to the 1800's. In addition, other dangers associated with earthquakes are examined in this program, such as landslides and water hazards. Wyoming's vast mountainous areas are especially susceptible to landslides, which are inherently dangerous. The many lakes and reservoirs in the Cowboy state are also a concern for experts. Venerable structures, such as Jackson Lake Dam are located in or near high hazard areas. For home owners, this video will show how simple improvements can be made, to make homes more disaster resistant.

What is the purpose of a school library media center? School libraries have a slightly different purpose from that of a public library. For a school library, both services and resources should support the classroom curriculum. In these days of “standards-based education” this really means providing support for the state or district content/curriculum/ learning standards (terminology varies) that your local school district has adopted. Exercise: Find a copy of your district’s adopted content standards. These standards will be located either in the district’s curriculum office or perhaps in the principal’s office at your school. Keep these standards for future use as you plan your instruction and purchases during the year. What is the mission of your school library media center? Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning (AASL, 1998) aka is a book that presents national guidelines for school libraries. This book also includes a global mission statement for all library media centers as well as a set of information literacy standards for students.

Preliminary Guidance for Migrant Education Program, Title I, Part C Public Law 103-382
Appendix A Resources for Technical Assistance
To help all children reach high academic standards, many states, school districts, and schools will need a new kind of technical assistance. They will need comprehensive assistance that is driven by the needs of families and children and that can provide tools and information to help them leverage all available resources in order to improve teaching and learning for all children. To that end, the Department is creating regional technical assistance centers to provide comprehensive, high-quality assistance and information. The Depart ment is also changing the way it relates to the field by shifting its focus from monitoring for compliance to providing support to enhance program quality.
Regional Service Teams and Integrated Programs Reviews
The Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE), which houses the Office of Migrant Education, has a new organizational structure that is built around ten regional service teams. Existing program offices, including the Office of Migrant Education, will retain a small program base, but will provide most services to OESE grantees through teams that have staff with expertise in OESE's programs. This new structure signals a new relationship with states and local operating agencies. Rather than focus on providing program-specific advice, the restructured OESE will use cross-program teams to encourage and support state and local efforts to integra te services and collaborate across programs. In anticipation of this change, OESE began in 1994-95 to conduct integrated reviews of federally funded education programs. Integrated reviews are on-site observations and assessments performed by a team of s taff members from two or more program offices within the Department. Each focused on the progress of systemic reform efforts within a state and explored how individual federal programs fit within that broad reform effort. The Office of Migrant Education participated in all of the initial integrated reviews.

The national program was established in the fall of 1995 to help states, local educational agencies, teachers, school library and media personnel, administrators, and other education entities successfully integrate technologies in K-12 classrooms, library media centers, and other educational settings, including adult literacy centers and teacher education programs. The members of the Northwest consortium include the six state education agencies of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming, the Educational Service District 101 (based in Spokane, Washington), and NWREL as the lead grantee. The activities of the consortium in each member state are tailored to the needs of each state and are coordinated to complement existing delivery mechanisms or programs. Member states have identified four priorities for NETC services and products: NETC uses technology whenever possible to disseminate information and to provide staff development or technical assistance, including:

School Staffing Survey 2000 LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD LIBRARIANS By Nancy Everhart 9/1/2000
Features > According to the latest research, the shortage of school librarians is becoming a national crisis Many school librarians who entered the field in the 1960s are almost ready to retire. And their junior colleagues in public schools in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and, most recently, Massachusetts, may join them sooner rather than later, thanks to early retirement legislation. This turnover would be no problem if most states required districts to hire only certified staff and if library schools were flush with trained and ready recruits. www.usnews.com/usnews/issue/000612/lib.htm
