W3Make - A XML Web Publishing System Introduction Download and Samples
Introduction
When I started rewriting the website for my employee Novel Science International I decided to do this in XML and quickly encountered a huge problem with this. When you pass your XML document through an XSLT stylesheet using a parser like Saxon you may use exactly one XML document, pass it through exactly one XSLT stylesheet and generate exactly one outputfile. Well M. Kay (the author of Saxon) already wrote an extension to write to more than one outputfile from such a stylesheet file by introducing the saxon -namespace and the saxon:output instruction. During my work on W3make the W3C published XSL 1.1 which then allowed for more than one outputfile officially.
But the problem with one inputfile still remained. How are you supposed to generate correct links between the pages of your site with just one inputfile, not even knowing which pages are at hand?

Conclusion

One of XML's major benefits to web developers is that it is a standard way to separate data from presentation, and create a consistent templating system for a web site. Yet that promise is yet to be fully realized by many, due to the immature state of XML tool support, especially in authoring. An important part of using XML for web publishing is content delivery . Although XML-to-HTML conversion is partially possible in browsers such as Internet Explorer, the reality is that HTML or XHTML will be served from web servers for a long time to come. This means server-side XML transformation is the most viable option for publishing with XML today. Server side transformations can be handled at various levels. The most basic of these is static transformations (e.g., using an XSLT processor and some shell scripts), but this method can quickly become awkward, and is not satisfactory for dynamic web sites. Another option is application server environments such as Zope or Enhydra. If you have a real need to use these products, they are a good choice. But keep in mind that they have a tendency to operate within their own enclosed universe.

... Read OnlineSafari Search this book on Safari: Only This Book All of Safari Code Fragments only by Brett McLaughlin This excerpt is Chapter 9 from Java and XML , published in June 2000 by O'Reilly. This chapter begins our look at specific Java and XML topics. So far, we have covered the basics of using XML from Java, looking at the SAX and DOM APIs to manipulate XML and the fundamentals of using and creating XML itself. We've also looked at how JDOM can provide a more Java-centric means of using our XML data and documents within Java programs. Now that you have a grasp on using XML from your code, we will spend time on specific applications. The next six chapters represent the most significant applications of XML, and, in particular, how those applications are implemented in the Java space. While there are literally hundreds and soon to be thousands of important applications of XML, the topics in these chapters are those that continually seem to be in the spotlight, and that have a significant potential to change the way traditional development processes occur.

    About Runtime
The next generation of open-source web applications will be based on Java and XML. Because Java can run in any operating system, there is a huge pool of developers building new web technologies with it. This means that the rate of technological growth is astonishing, with new developments and standards constantly emerging. XML is fuelling this growth by making data as portable as code, and previously seperate systems are becoming increasingly easy to integrate through common XML standards. Java and XML are now maturing as particular technologies stabilise and become more reliable, and standards gain industry momentum. Here at Runtime we have been using, researching, and teaching Java as individuals for many years; and we are now starting to use it as a commercial development environment. This document summarises some of the core technologies that the open-source community should be aware of. Joe Faith , September 2000

A framework of this sort cuts down a lot of time/money that would have to be spent custom developing or buying the same thing. After getting the infrastructure (buying, downloading, developing, etc.) in place the next step is to make the applications that will drive the website.

    Staff Report, email@maccentral.com
April 24, 2000, 3:00 pm ET Quark and Extensibility , a provider of enabling technologies for XML schemas, have announced a software bundling agreement. With the purchase of Avenue.quark, a new tool for converting QuarkXPress content into XML, customers will receive a trial version of XML Authority, a XML schema creation, conversion and management solution. Avenue.quark lets users tag the content of QuarkXPress documents and then extract it into XML using a Document Type Definition (DTD) as the blueprint for the data structure. When imported into XML Authority, the data structure or schema can be enhanced and converted into all other major and emerging dialects. This alliance creates flexibility for the interchange of content, internally or with business partners, making it easy to re-use QuarkXPress content on the Web and elsewhere, according to Kristin Rowley, product manager for XML tools at Quark, in a press release. "We're excited to be working with Quark. The combination of Avenue.quark and XML Authority fulfills the promise of XML for publishers to customize and repurpose their content on a large scale," said Reid Conrad, president and CEO of Extensibility.

    XML Web Publishing (code: X652)
Due to the business needs in enterprise application, e-commerce and e-business, we are already at the 3rd generation of the Web technology. The first generation is purely content-oriented driven by static HTML. As the Web activities and business potentials keep growing, the 2nd generation came to provide more powerful dynamic HTML capabilities, to interact users with more information processing, possibly involved back-end systems. However, without a clear and better technology roadmap to cater for the needs, the dynamic HTML style is turning messy and getting out of control in which a single web page might contain a mixture of presentation, business logic, sitemap specification, and contextual information. This makes the development, support and enhancement very difficult. Therefore, we are now in the 3rd generation called Web Publishing. Workshop Content

    Welcome to Apache AxKit!
/'aks/-kit Apache AxKit is an XML Application Server for Apache . It provides on-the-fly conversion from XML to any format , such as HTML, WAP or text using either standard techniques, or flexible custom code. AxKit also uses a built-in Perl interpreter to provide some amazingly powerful techniques for XML transformation. AxKit makes the separation of content and presentation a practical reality. The pipelining technique that AxKit uses allows content to be converted to a presentable format in stages, allowing certain platforms to see data differently to others. AxKit allows web designers to focus on web site design, content developers to work on a purely content basis, and webmasters to focus on their core competencies. Ax Kit is based on components that are replaceable. This allows the web site developer to create a completely custom XML Application Server based around the AxKit API. AxKit can either automatically provide caching facilities, or you can create your own cache handler, so that XML transformations (which can be time consuming) only happen when required. The toolkit also provides ability to build component based web sites, and dynamic content. Database integration is fully supported, allowing either delivery of XML from a database, or XML generation from a database query. Dynamic web components can be built using the Perl language, making the possibilities as infinite as CGI scripts, without the potential mess that CGI programming can cause.

What is Cocoon? Apache Cocoon is an XML publishing framework that raises the usage of XML and XSLT technologies for server applications to a new level. Designed for performance and scalability around pipelined SAX processing, Cocoon offers a flexible environment based on a separation of concerns between content, logic, and style. To top this all off, Cocoon's centralized configuration system and sophisticated caching help you to create, deploy, and maintain rock-solid XML server applications. Cocoon interacts with most data sources, including filesystems, RDBMS, LDAP, native XML databases, and network-based data sources. It adapts content delivery to the capabilities of different devices like HTML, WML, PDF, SVG, and RTF, to name just a few. You can run Cocoon as a Servlet as well as through a powerful, commandline interface. The deliberate design of its abstract environment gives you the freedom to extend its functionality to meet your special needs in a highly modular fashion. Where can I find it?
