Click HERE On October 12, 2000, the USS Cole, an American Naval Destroyer, entered the harbor of Aden, Yemen to refuel. After the mooring of the ship to a buoy, the refueling operation began. Approximately 45 minutes into the refueling, a small ship, described as either a Zodiac-type rubber craft or a fiberglass boat, placed itself alongside the Cole and blew up. The resulting explosion tore an 40 by 40 foot hole in the side of the destroyer, causing casualties among the ship's crew. The casualties total 17 dead and an additional 39 wounded. The injured were first evacuated to Yemeni medical facilities onshore for treatment and later evacuation to the U.S. base at Ramstein, Germany and a French military hospital in nearby Djibouti. In the words of Admiral Vern Clark, the Chief of U.S. Naval Operations, "...this was clearly a terrorist act.'' As the United States later learned, the attack was carried out by terrorists associated with Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network.

Between the 12th century BC and the 6th century AD, it was part of the Minaean, Sabaean, and Himyarite kingdoms, which controlled the lucrative spice trade, and later came under Ethiopian and Persian rule. In the 7th century, Islamic caliphs began to exert control over the area. After this caliphate broke up, the former north Yemen came under control of Imams of various dynasties usually of the Zaidi sect, who established a theocratic political structure that survived until modern times. As a result, several pre-Islamic trading kingdoms grew up astride an incense trading route that ran northwest between the foothills and the edge of the desert. First, there was the Minaean kingdom, which lasted from about 1200 to 650 bc, and whose prosperity was due mainly to the trade of frankincense and spices. The large and prosperous kingdom of Saba’ (Sheba), founded in the 10th century bc and ruled by Bilqis, the queen of Sheba, among others, was known for its efficient farming and extensive irrigation system built around a large dam constructed at Ma‘rib. Farther south and east, in the region that would later become South Yemen. The Romans began expanding their power and influence into the Red Sea in the 1st century AD and soon learned the secret of the Yemeni traders: how to exploit the monsoon winds to traffic between the Red Sea and southern Asia. It was then only a matter of time before Yemeni prestige began to dwindle, since they could not effectively compete against imperial Rome. The resulting economic decline made it impossible for the Yemeni states to maintain their extensive cities and attendant facilities; the most famous instance was the failure to maintain the Great Dam at Ma'rib—the heart of a monumental irrigation project and one of the engineering marvels of the ancient world. Its rupture in AD 525 constitutes the symbolic end to the ascendancy of the Yemeni empires.

Less than a week later, army officers, led by Col (later Marshal) Abdullah as-Sallal, removed the Imam and proclaimed the Yemen Arab Republic. Civil war ensued between royalist forces, supported by Saudi Arabia, and republicans, aided by Egyptian troops. The republicans gained the upper hand and Egyptian forces withdrew in 1967. In November President Sallal was deposed by a Republican Council. A cease-fire was arranged in the same month, under the auspices of the Arab League , and soon afterwards both sides agreed to the union of the two Yemens within 18 months. The union was not, however, implemented. Later in the same month, however, at a meeting between the North and South Yemen Reads of State in Kuwait, arranged by the Arab League, an agreement was signed pledging unification of the two states. The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990 proved problematic for the Government of Yemen, as the economy was heavily dependent on trade with, and aid from Iraq, and also on aid from Saudi Arabia, which was host to a considerable number of Yemeni expatriate workers. In December 1990 Yemen assumed the chair of the UN Security Council (which rotates on a monthly basis), and the Government increased its efforts to mediate in the Gulf crisis.
