Arts and Culture Over the years, a number of very talented artists of all types have called Faro home. These artists range from musical ( have you heard of " The Moffats " ? Frank and Darlana Moffat were already long time Faroites when the triplets were born!! Visit their website .) to artists that sculpted and painted in a wide variety of media. Some of these talented people chose to make Faro and the Yukon the subject of their art works, and the paintings of artists such as Ellen McKay, Fran London, and Judy Nice can be found in homes literally all over the world. The first world class Folk Festival to be held in Northern Canada was Farrago , which took place in the early 1970's. Notable artists from all over North America came to take part in Farrago, which was an annual event sponsored primarily by Cyprus Anvil (the mine owners). Artists such as Dan Hill, Valdy, John Allan Cameron, and Bruce Cockburn made trips to Faro to entertain the hundreds of people that showed up to enjoy the festival. Another medium that you will find talented Faroites working in is the written word. The Faro Writers Club has actively participated in honing the skills of novices and veterans alike for many years. Although the membership has at times dwindled, the spirit has not. This persevering spirit culminated in the book: "Madmen and Dreamers" published a few years ago by the Faro Historical Society.

CYFN Today Culture and Language There are eight distinct languages spoken by Yukon First Nation peoples: Tlingit and six Athapaskan languages - Upper Tanana, Gwitchin, Han, Northern Tutchone, Southern Tutchone, Kaska and Tagish. Others, including Tahltan are less well represented but are also part of Yukon First Nations' cultural heritage. Many Yukon elders are multilingual. Complex oral histories and customs have evolved over many generations. However, rapid changes brought Sam Johnston on by the 1896-98 Klondike Goldrush, and the 1942 opening the Alaska Highway have led to English becoming the most frequently spoken language among Yukon First Nation people. Other forces have worked to erode Yukon First Nation cultural traditions. From 1950-60 governments and the churches combined their resources in an intensive effort to 'assimilate' Yukon Indians into the settler population. During the 1970s and 80s, Yukon First Nations began to reassert their right to control education as part of the overall movement to achieve a land claim settlement. In 1972, the Yukon Native Brotherhood's position paper "Education of Yukon Indians" challenged the federal and territorial governments to change their cultural assimilation practices. Since 1977, Yukon First Nations (through the Council for Yukon Indians and the Council of Yukon First Nations) have administered a program of language research and instruction to native language instructors in public schools. Today, the Yukon Native Language Centre is internationally recognized for its expertise in Native language instruction and research.
