he First Nations people are very friendly and easily approached. They are also very knowledgeable regarding the Yukon in all aspects. Visitors are advised that if they are travelling throughout the Yukon and happen to come across camps that are being utilized by the First Nations for traditional pursuits, they should respect that this is not always a tourist attraction and that this is a way of life. They may ask if it is okay to watch, visit or participate. Visitors are reminded that First Nation burial grounds are not to be disturbed.

Guide: Murray Lundberg A note from Murray: Back in 1996, there was very little accurate information online about my home region, Canada's Yukon Territory. I was just finishing writing my first local history book, and while looking for ways to put some of my research online, discovered a company with a dream - a dream to turn people's passion about a subject into a human-powered search engine. It looked perfect, and I applied to join. Canada Far North only lasted a year - running two sites was too demanding, and I consolidated the material I had gathered into the Arctic/Northern Culture site. Visitors to the Arctic/Northern Culture site were primarily interested in one of two things - research material for school projects or travel information. In the spring of 2001, changing attitudes at About.com led to me moving all of my material onto my own sites in order to serve my readers' needs better. Hundreds of Guides have left over the years (over 300 in September 2001 alone), but for many, the dream of sharing their passion with people has remained. In my case, sharing information about Yukon and Alaska History, the Circumpolar North and Northern Breed Dogs is my chosen career, and the fully-interactive Web sites below are now run from a little cabin overlooking a glacial lake in the Yukon. Yukon Territory
Culture The language of the Yukon Territory is:
In Yukon First Nations may be divided into two main language groups. There are one or more of the Athapaskan languages, that most people speak. they include Gwich'in (or Kutchin), Han, Northern and Southern Tutchone, Kaska and Tagish (now extinct). The Athapaskan Languages of the Yukon First Nations are distantly related to each other. Thousands of years of living in different areas, however, mean that the language are not similar now, and a speaker of one cannot understand a speaker of another. The second main language group is Tlingit. Tlingit speakers from the West Coast migrated in land and settled in the Southern part of the Territory. Some of the special celebrations that take place in the Yukon territory are:
Southern Lakes Classic Dogsled Race, begins in February : It is a two-day round trip dogsled race between the tiny towns of Carcross and Tagish. Frostbite Music Festival, in Whitehorse in mid-February: It is two days of music workshops, concerts, and evening dances. From all over Canada and the United States musicians and entertainers come to perform. Annual Yukon Quest, is in the end of February:

CALISTA ELDERS COUNCIL
CULTURE CAMPS IN THE CALISTA REGION
SUMMER OF 2000
Calista Elders Council has received funding to run three 10 day culture camps in the region this summer. First one will be at Umkumiute on Nelson Island in early June for the coastal villages, second in late August and early September near Kwethluk for Kuskokwim villages and the third will be between Pilot Station and Marshall for Yukon villages. The Camps will incorporate two age groups: Village Elders who will serve as the Camps' teachers and mentors to the second group of participants, 7 th and 8 th grade youths who will be attending the Camps to learn Yup'ik/Cup'ik cultural skills, history and values. Subsistence hunting, fishing and harvesting activities appropriate to each camp location will be the focus of the Camps, providing the Elders an opportunity to pass down traditional skills and values. Special Circumstances (Project Narrative): In keeping with the language and spirit of CEC's mission, two primary groups will share our Culture Camp experience: village elders (1 per 5 campers, an equal number of men and women) who will serve as the teachers, counselors, and mentors of our traditional values and life skills; and village youth (2 per village, an equal number of boys and girls) who will be their students and partners in this culture-based learning experience. Tribal governments from the three Calista regions (Coastal, Kuskokwirn and Yukon) where the camps are to be conducted will recommend the Camp elders. In this way, the elders of each camp will possess knowledge that is sensitive and relevant to each region's geography and the unique traditions and necessary life skills that evolved from it.

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta is rich in Eskimo culture. Bethel's Yup'ik Cultural Center features museum exhibits, demonstrations of dancing and carving, and local arts and crafts in its gift shop.. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife headquarters in Bethel maintains a display illustrating activities available within the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. This 20-million-acre area is a premier wildlife habitat where visitors can view swans, geese, ducks, and other shore and water birds, as well as moose, caribou, brown bear, black bear, and wolves. Offshore, Nunivak Island supports herds of introduced musk oxen and reindeer. Fishing, hunting, and backcountry recreation are excellent in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta area. Visitor facilities are limited in local villages, but residents are accommodating. Local guide services provide air transportation to areas of the wildlife refuge. The service is available from Bethel, Aniak, St. Mary's, and most other communities within the region. This area is ideal for a visitor who wishes to avoid tourist crowds and enjoys the slower pace of the local culture.
