"Brilliant. Its clear and unpretentious language and Hancocks' evident passion for and knowledge of his subject made it one of the best books I have read in a long while."Tim Murray, The Age (Melbourne) "This brilliantly researched and persuasive book traces the sociology of animal captivity back to Paleolithic times." Publishers Weekly "The capture and display of wild animals, an ancient and universal phenomenon, embodies a dichotomy, Hancocks explains in this engrossing history of zoos and their role in society. His critique of the miseries associated with their museumlike warehousing of living creatures is electrifying, the perfect lead-in to his discussion of the slow realization that naturalistic habitats are essential to zoo animals' health and happiness." Booklist "[Hancocks] writes authoritatively and compassionately, and fortunately offers some ideas on how to improve zoos for both the animals and the people who visit them."

65. Are Zoos Allowed In Islam? What Does Islam Say About Animal Cruelty?
Proverbs 1210 does not address the treatment of animals as Islam does. The verseis too general and too ambiguous if we wish to prohibit zoos through it.
http://www.aol40.com/animal_cruelty.htm
Warning!!
This article contains images of animal fights, captivity and torture. Viewer discretion is advised. My Message and Appeal to you: Animals can roam 100s of square miles. Locking them in cages is worse than life in prison with hard labor! Please say no to Zoos and pets imprisonment (i.e., birds and fishes). Allah Almighty created animals to live in communities like us. This means that He created means of communication and understanding for them (languages as we call it). This simply raises the animals to a level which prohibits us to imprison them and to lock them up for life in zoos: "There is not an animal (That lives) on the earth, Nor a being that flies On its wings, but (forms Part of) communities like you. Nothing have We omitted From the Book, and they (all) Shall be gathered to their Lord In the end. (The Noble Quran, 6:38) " Since animals live in communities like us, this makes them deserve to live a free and open life, and not to be locked up in prisons (zoos and cages at our home). Are Zoos allowed in Islam? What does Islam say about animal cruelty?

WHAT IS AEZA?
The Spanish Association of Zoos and Aquaria (AEZA) is a non-profit making organization which brings together all Spanish Zoos and Aquaria believing in the following basic mission: Promote the conservation of nature through scientific and educational endeavours, offering a maximum degree of well-being to the animals they house along with leisure and cultural activities to the public visiting their facilities. At present the Association consists of twenty eight member organizations which follow the recommendations approved by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) regarding the care of animals in zoos and by which standards the members of our Association are bound. AEZA is a member of The Spanish Association of Zoos and Aquaria was founded on 5th May 1988 in Santillana del Mar (Cantabria). A few months previously, the European Community of Zoos and Aquaria (now EAZA) had been created in Rotterdam. From then onwards, most Common Market countries set out to establish their own national-level organizations. Thus began a generalized movement towards the organization of the international zoological community, which understood the need to unite efforts and integrate initiatives in order to channel its enormous educational and conservationist potential in an efficient manner. The predecessor of the Spanish Association of Zoos and Aquaria was the Unión Ibérica de Parques Zoológicos (Iberian Union of Zoos), which no longer exists.

Approach to vaccination of animals in zoos
Guidelines for vaccinating endangered species and promoting biosecurity in zoos. (4 May 2001)
General
A Commission decision of 12 April permitted, but did not require, Member States to use vaccination to protect endangered species (and possibly irreplaceable research animals). It also required zoos and similar enterprises containing endangered species to implement any biosecurity measures necessary to protect the animals; what is involved in implementing such biosecurity measures is set out on the DEFRA website. The Commission decision was not directed at improving the commercial position of zoos by allowing them to stay open despite real risk of infection. The conditions under which vaccination is allowed, and the arrangements for vaccination are very restrictive. There are also international trade implications to be taken into account.
When might a Member State agree that animals in a zoo qualified for vaccination?

General Requirements For Private Ownership
Check out our Model Regulations that are available to Local and State agencies that are interested in implementing jurisdication regarding wildcats. Here you will find some guidelines to owning an exotic cat. Please don't be fooled into believing that it will be any less work that having children! It is not for everyone. Don't make the mistake of believing that if you can't endure for the lifetime of your cat, you will be able to place it at a zoo. This misconception is what gets a lot of exotic animals euthanized because they are very hard to place. Zoos are full to capacity and also have strict requirements on the animals that they acquire for studbook breeding purposes and AZA (American Zoos and Aquariums Association) regulations. Compounds like Wild About Cats have to rescue some, but there are simply not enough sanctuaries for them all. Therefore, taking into consideration that many people are determined to get a cat no matter what they are told, and that many people are capable of being responsible owners, we always advise on captive husbandry. We would rather that these people were educated properly on care and handling, rather than dictated to that what they are doing is wrong. This is for the sake of the cats that did not ask to be born into these situations. If after reading through this information you would like to know more about captive wild cat husbandry and whether or not it is for you, go to the links provided at the end of this article.

General Policy About Zoos

Since zoos require a significant amount of resources in the form of land, water, energy and money, no new zoo shall be set up unless a sustained supply of resources including finance and technical support are guaranteed.
Zoos shall prepare a long-term masterplan for development to ensure optimum utilisation of the land, water, energy and finance.
Every Zoo shall maintain a healthy, hygienic and natural environment in the zoo, so that the visitors get an adequate opportunity to experience a natural environment.
Zoos shall give priority to endagered species in their collection and breeding plans. The order of preference for selection of species shall be (in descending order) locality, region, country and other areas.
Zoos shall regulate the number of animals of various species in their collection in such a way that each animal serves the objectives of the zoo. For achieving this objective, a detailed management plan of every species in the zoo shall be prepared.
Every zoo shall endeavour to avoid keeping single animals of non-viable sex ratios of any species. They shall cooperate in pooling such animals into genetically, demographically and socially viable groups at zoos identified for the purpose.

Flamingos Not Just Lawn Ornaments - 11/22/02
Dear Bird Folks: I know that flamingos are real birds, but do they really exist in the wild or are they just an odd bird that zoos have created? And is there some secret reason why people have plastic ones in their yards?
-Dora, Barnstable First of All Dora, Zoos do not invent their own birds. Dr. Seuss is the only one allowed to do that. Zoos have real birds. They may not be happy birds, but they are definitely real. Flamingos are truly wild birds that can be found in many pockets of the world, including Africa, India, the Caribbean, South America and of course on Rt. 6A in Brewster. Flamingos can also be found in parts of Florida. In fact, flamingos have been around for over seven million years. Which makes them younger than most of Florida’s residents. Many of the Florida birds are escapees from parks and reserves. Back in the 1930's, in what can only be described as one of the stupidest moves of the century, some bonehead captured a flock of flamingos in Central America and released them at the Hialeah Race Track in Miami. The next day all the birds flew away. Duh! A few years later they tried it again, only this time they clipped the bird's flight feathers and a colony of 900 flamingos is there to this day. Flamingos are totally unique birds. They are as tall as a Great Blue Heron only wicked thin, like a super model. Being thin and frail makes a flamingo basically defenseless. To protect their young they nest in large colonies in the middle of wet alkaline or saline lakes and lagoons that are so gross that even predators won't go there. They build tall mud nests, that look like top hats, to keep their eggs out of the water.
