Extractions: Research Notes Minnesota Maps and Atlases Where people lived often dictated how they lived and kept records. In a frontier attracting settlers from New England, Scandinavia, Germany, Ireland and other points, living among the descendents of early fur traders, entrepreneurs and Indians, land is a critical piece in the family puzzle. Excellent maps of the state and where the immigrants settled can be found in They Chose Minnesota , a classic work on ethnic roots within the state. The next question is often "Who lived next door?" In addition to the census records, the orderly pattern of the landscape provides clues, too. That pattern results from the Land Ordinance of 1785, the American Rectangular Land Survey System , which created an arrangement of counties, townships and sections. Based on a 'township' with six-by-six numbered sections of one square mile, it affected the placement of roads, property boundaries, even schools and buildings. With a Minnesota land description, a researcher can use both old and current maps to locate family property. A typical description provides township, range and section numbers and can be found on assessment rolls, in wills, or deeds and mortgages.

Extractions: Research Notes Minnesota Maps in Family Research Sometimes, just looking at the right map will provide the information needed to break down a 'brick wall.' And sometimes, a researcher will become even more confused, because a given map doesn't agree with known facts. Putting together a family history is like solving a jigsaw puzzle sometimes what seem to be discrepancies can be overcome by turning the piece in a slightly different direction. Cartographers (a fancy name for map makers) have always created maps using less information than what is actually shown on the map. One needs only to look at Columbus' map, suggesting that he sail west to the Far East, to recognize that maps illustrate the known world, sprinkled with guesses about the unknown. This happens with modern maps as well. My family visited Duluth several years ago, armed with Delorme's Minnesota Atlas . We liked the atlas, because it provides detail not always available on other maps. When we tried to locate a particular address, we found that the Minnesota Highway Department, St. Louis County and the City of Duluth had been redesigning the transportation grid in the area. Streets which once were intersections now had fences prohibiting entrance, and new streets for new homes had been added. We needed to take a different approach than planned to reach our destination. Our map was definitely out of date! Though usually more current than maps published on paper, even on-line maps sometimes suffer from a lack of current information. If 'garbage' goes into the making of the map, can we expect more than 'garbage' to result?
