Extractions: Home General Information The Main Library The department houses a large collection consisting of over 260,000 print volumes, 45,400 bound periodicals, 10,000 bound newspaper volumes, 100,000 reels of microfilm, and almost 200,000 microfiche. The reference collection includes 530 directories, 160,000 maps, 2,375 atlases, 470 gazeteers and 230 carto-bibliographies. In addition, the department carries current subscriptions to 2000 journals and 50 newspapers. The reference collection includes a number of encyclopedias of historic interest, general encyclopedias in major European languages, and a broad collection of biographical dictionaries. The department maintains an extensive collection of travel guides, including indexes to hotels, bed and breakfast inns, campgrounds, and state and national parks.

Belcher Hyde, Inc. and Sanborn Map Company Maps documents twentieth-century Long Island. The majority of the maps are of Queens County; however the Division has maps for all of Long Island. E. Belcher Hyde, Inc. and the Sanborn Map Company created maps for the fire insurance industry. The maps allowed the insurance companies to estimate the liability of certain properties because they showed every structure in an area, the building materials of the structures, their sizes, addresses, uses, and other pertinent information. Every year Hyde or Sanborn employees surveyed the properties and corrected each volume to reflect any changes. These volumes are invaluable research tools because of their detail and accuracy. They allow researchers an opportunity to gain an understanding of the changing landscape. Researchers can use them to examine the development of an area, land ownership, usage, demography, genealogy, street changes, and much more. The Long Island Division's Hyde and Sanborn maps are all in bound volumes. The maps can be sketched, traced, or photographed. They cannot be photocopied.
