This list updates a similar feature covering earlier titles, "African & African American Studies: Outstanding Publications, 1990-1996," which appeared in the February 1997 issue of Choice The Outstanding Academic Books (OAB) list appears annually in the January issue of Choice to recognize the best and most important scholarly works reviewed during the previous calendar year. Titles are selected not only for excellence in scholarship and originality but also for relevance to undergraduate students, making the OAB feature a valuable collection development tool for academic libraries. Bibliographic entries for each title appear as originally published with the Choice review. The issue and review number for the original review appear at the end of each citation. AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES: HOUSTON BAKER ON RALPH ELLISON Assignment for next time Ralph Ellison, Invisible Man , chapter two. (on reserve) Houston A. Baker, "To Move Without Moving," Black Literature and Literary Theory : 221-48. (on reserve) Study questions 1. Baker's essay focuses on the writings of Ralph Ellison, author of Invisible Man (1952), one of the most important works of African-American literature. Baker begins by quoting not from Invisible Man itself, but from several of Ellison's critical essays. Based on these quotations, what might you infer about Ellison's attitude toward folklore? Why is Ellison skeptical of folklore? Why does he prefer art instead? And why, perhaps more importantly, might this issuethe relation between folklore and artbe of importance to Baker? Based on Baker's opening remarks about Ellison, what can you infer about Baker's attitude towards folklore? 2. Why does Baker make so much of the fact that Trueblood's story is "thoroughly rehearsed"? How does this fact fit into Baker's argument about "the public and private commerce of black art in America"? As you consider such questions, you might think first about the black artist (represented in Ellison's narrative by Trueblood) and then about his white audience (represented by Mr. Norton). According to Baker, what do white audiences usually want, need, and expect from black artists? (NOTE: I think that this group of questions is probably the most important of all.)

OBJECTIVES This introductory course explores the history and cultures of the African continent and the African diaspora in the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Based on cross-disciplinary perspectives from history, literature, and cultural theory, students will be expected to analyze topics about the African experience at home and abroad, that is, in Africa and its vast diasporic communities in the Americas. Throughout the course, students are expected to identify, assess, and critique the various dimensions of black identity in different places over time. This course is designed to encourage and stimulate critical thinking beyond "common sense" interpretations of history and culture.

Literary Review Published on Sundays Features: Magazine Literary Review Life Metro Plus ... Literary Review Let there be commerce American Studies needs to redefine itself and get interdisciplinary, says INDRAN AMIRTHANAYAGAM.
The great melting pot or market driven atomisation? The floor of the New York Stock Exchange, TO review the work of scholars is no Sunday hop, skip or dash, a few vigorous and amateur phrases hard run in the beginning to dazzle the reader with a burst of speed before sending her off on her own journey through American history and literature, its international relations and its democracy. Neither am I scholar nor sprinter but the director of Public Affairs at the American Consulate, Chennai and a poet and American citizen; and in this capacity I assert the right to a few observations and images about the nature of American Studies and whether indeed the examination of America is synonymous with analysis of the 48 contiguous states and Alaska and Hawaii. I suggest at the outset that American Studies encompasses a geography far greater than any 50 states. It is indeed the study of interaction between the countries of the globe and these 50 states. It reflects encounters in airports such as Kennedy or O'Hara and their attendant cities; it includes a dizzying range of meetings, between immigrant inspector and visitor, policeman and young man on roller-skates, the multi-coloured mix of students on campus, the various interest groups that hyphenate with and within the two mainstream political parties.
