One Thousand One Papua New Guinean Nights
Description What Reviewers Have Said Sample Folktales References ... Purchase The book can be ordered from Masalai Press or from Amazon.com Wantok , the Pidgin English (Tok Pisin) newspaper of Papua New Guinea (PNG), has published a series of folk tales sent in by readers from around the country since 1972 . I have collected and edited these folk tales, and have translated them into English through 1997. I have indexed them by author, village original language , province, flora and fauna, and motif. There is also a list of folktale titles that I have translated into English. Rather than index culture group, which is not well-standardized in PNG, the name of the local language used in the village from which each story originates is indexed. The names for the language index are primarily based on Dutton (1973) Laycock (1973) Wurm (1975) Wurm (1976) ... Wurm and Hattori (1983) , and Z'graggen (1975) . Generally, only distinct languages are indexed, not dialects. The current count of languages in the index is 247. This represents 35% of Papua New Guinea's total language count (about 700, according to Wurm, 1985

An annotated bibliography of Papua New Guinean folklore
Below is an annotated bibliography of Melanesian folklore. Bibliographic entries are included for Papua New Guinea, ex-Irian Jaya, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia. Please send comments and corrections to me. A "*" following a reference indicates that I have not seen. I use Wurm and Hattori (1983) to standardize references to groups of people, where each group listed under language name (or "People") corresponds to a distinct language group in Wurm and Hattori (1983). Language Atlas of the Pacific Area. Part I. New Guinea Area, Oceania, Australia. Pacific Linguistics, Series C, No. 67. Canberra: Australian Academy of the Humanities. Oral History (Port Moresby) is an important source for Papua New Guinean mythology, but it is at few libraries and is no longer published. It was published by the Institute of Papua New Guinea Studies. Below, I have indexed many myths from this journal . Oral History was published as the following issues: 1(1-10) [1973], 2(1-10) [1974], 3(1-10) [1975], 4(-10) [1976], 5 (1-10) [1977], 6 (1-10) [1978], 7(1-10) [1979], 8(1-10) [1980], 9(1-4) [1981], 10(1-4) [1982], 11(1-4) [1983], 12(1-4) [1984], 13 (1-2) [1985]. Vladimir Kabo AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL ART AND RUSSIAN ICON PAINTING Published in: Histories of Old Ages: Essays in Honour of Rhys Jones . Canberra, 2001, pp.267-275 TWO ARTISTIC WORLDS: FEATURES IN COMMON Medieval Russian icon painting and Australian Aboriginal art - what comparison could be more unexpected, more paradoxical? They belong to worlds very different in cultural history and in art. Yet comparison and apposition are feasible and acceptable, provided that one goes into the essence of both forms of art. Both Russian icon painting and traditional Aboriginal art - at least to a significant degree - belong to religious art, to religious creativity. They are both conceptual and the notion of the sacred is central to each of them. Their affinity, their common features are central for both - it is their place and function in social life, their content ('sacred history') and their language of symbol and metaphor. Their common themes indicate that they are based on universal archetypes of consciousness. Traditional Aboriginal art, in its sources and fundamental forms, is religious and esoteric, although that does not imply that its content extends no further. It performs other functions: communicative, informational, educational and aesthetic, as well as philosophical and cognitive. However, they all are organically interwoven, and religion plays a dominant role in this complex. For the Aboriginal artist and the icon painter, abstract notions very often lie behind a material visual image, the world around is a great metaphor, full of symbols and concealed meanings. When it appears to us that the Aboriginal artist or icon painter seeks to depict the real world, actually they are drawing a world of meaning, a world of things, beings and happenings replete with meaning. For them the universe is an infinite system of signs. For both, their art, in the words of Saint Paul on faith, is 'the evidence of things not seen' (Hebrews XI, 1).

OVERVIEW OF AUSTRALIA (1991)
Australia is the only country in the world which is a continent in itself. The land area is more than 2,967,000 square miles, about the same size as the continental United States. This continent is located southeast of Asia and lies between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Australia is south of the equator and the closest nations to its shores are New Guinea, New Zealand, and Indonesia. One outstanding feature of Australia is the fact that mountain ranges extend all around the outer edge of the continent; however, the highest mountain is only 7,300 feet, which is not high compared to some in the United States. The area of land between the mountain ranges and the coastline serves as the host for most of the 17 million people of the country. Among Australia's many beautiful beaches, the most famous is the Great Barrier Reef which is noted for its coral formations. The interior of Australia has a large plateau which occupies almost three-fourths of the nation. However, one-third of the country is not suited for habitation and another one-third cannot be closely settled because of low rainfall. Australia has the second largest desert in the world which is called the Simpson Desert. Because of its geographical position and the absence of high mountains, Australia has a more temperate climate than other countries in corresponding latitudes. The warmer climate is located in the northern part of the country while the colder climate is in the south. The seasons are reverse of that in the United States.

Mythological Review Millennium Issue Special Edition 5000 Years of Mythology “All the Time in the World” Editor, Joseph O’Keefe Featuring this Millennium’s Interview ñ Epimetheus queried by his brother, Prometheus Promethues, (Forethought): Mythology is the subject of our 5000 year Review! For the uninitiated, Epimetheus, would you give our reader a brief explanation from your extensive experiences? Epimetheus, (Afterthought): After all these years and all that has already been written and said about mythology I will try my best to be interesting and informative to your readers, viewers, listeners and callers. In my view, Mythology is both the literature of origins and the original literature. It is characterized by and with the deeds of the Beautiful and the Beastly and is immensely interesting form of entertainment! Dear Brother, I know you will agree that it is also at times a fanciful family history. YEK the gods!!! The stories of the gods and demigods; goddesses and demigoddesses, be they kind or cruel, have always generated a large following especially among theologians and divinity students who are looking for moral imperatives and ritual antecedents. I am especially partial to stories dug up by Archeologists who are easy to excite and get worked up about the tales of ordinary men and women whose initial actions over time are exaggerated and overblown. These ordinary beings are frequently elevated into cult heroes, superstars, and occasionally divine status with their depiction in sculpture, painting and all sorts of bric-a-brac and making them famous for more than the 15 minutes allotted to modern man.
