Classroom Management Classroom management can be the most trying aspect of any new teacher's first weeks. Maintaining student interest and respect while providing good teaching is a challenge for seasoned pros and it can be really tough for beginning teachers. The following sections on managing classroom behavior and learning can help you to get things off to a good start... CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE MANAGERS
OF STUDENT BEHAVIOR Successful managers of student behavior do the following:
    1. Before the beginning of the school year, carefully consider the guidelines needed to promote positive student behaviors; Establish three to five overarching rules by which students can be guided to develop positive behaviors State them clearly.
    • Make them short and easy to memorize. State them positively. Get a commitment (show of hands, vote, contract, bulletin board display).
    3. Teach each rule (share expectations) and its positive and negative consequences;

Going into the school year, I had vague expectations of instilling a cerebral atmosphere. My students would silently revere the learning process, and I would quell the occasional whisper with a firm-but-not-stern shake of the head. All that fractured with the whap of paper's impact on a rosy cheek.

These pages are designed to help foster effective teaching by facilitating the links between post secondary educators and many important web-site resources. This service is provided by the CIDR, as part of a larger faculty resource initiative of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education. For more information about the POD Network please go to: http://lamar.colostate.edu/~ckfgill/
    ABOUT THESE WEB PAGES
We have divided these web pages into two main sections ( Testing and Grading , and Student Conduct and Classroom Management ), although you may notice many areas in which both of these categories are closely linked. The pages are formatted as a list of often-asked questions and pertinent web-links where information and answers may be found. We have included only those web resources that offer information that is applicable to faculty concerns beyond any specific higher education institution. The information at these web-sites is relevant to teaching personnel in a wide variety of higher education settings. As always, however, the usefulness of the information has to be considered within the missions, philosophies, standards, and requirements of specific programs, departments, and institutions.

11 Techniques for Better Classroom Discipline
Here are eleven techniques that you can use in your classroom that will help you achieve effective group management and control. They have been adapted from an article called Phi Delta Kappan , September 1986.
    1. Focusing
The focusing technique means that you will demand their attention before you begin. It means that you will wait and not start until everyone has settled down. Experienced teachers know that silence on their part is very effective. They will punctuate their waiting by extending it 3 to 5 seconds after the classroom is completely quiet. Then they begin their lesson using a quieter voice than normal.
A soft spoken teacher often has a calmer, quieter classroom than one with a stronger voice. Her students sit still in order to hear what she says.
    2. Direct Instruction
Uncertainty increases the level of excitement in the classroom. The technique of direct instruction is to begin each class by telling the students exactly what will be happening. The teacher outlines what he and the students will be doing this period. He may set time limits for some tasks.
The teacher is more willing to wait for class attention when he knows there is extra time to meet his goals and objectives. The students soon realize that the more time the teacher waits for their attention, the less free time they have at the end of the hour.

    36. Classroom Support
Am I using effective instructional strategies and curricula to teach these skills studentbehavior and the effectiveness of my classroom management practices?
    http://www.pbis.org/english/Classroom_Support.htm
Classroom Support Overview PBS in the Classroom FAQS Useful Materials ... Relevant Literature Overview Unlike nonclassroom settings where the emphasis is on supervision in unstructured activities, classroom environments are teacher directed, instructionally focused, and group oriented. In addition, teachers have high degrees of autonomy which gives them opportunities to make individual decisions about classroom management strategies, curriculum selections, instructional design, etc. In classrooms, both behavior and instructional management practices are combined to enable teaching and learning to occur.
Although teacher autonomy is desirable, some level of consistency with the school-wide and nonclassroom system practices is needed to ensure that students establish clear discriminations about desirable and undesirable behaviors across all school environments. In addition, classroom events, for example, have carryover effects into nonclassroom environments, and vice versa, and teaching and nonteaching staff members must work predictably to ensure consistency.
When establishing classroom systems of positive behavioral support, the goal is to extend and support the school-wide system so students can be successful across variations in curriculum, instructional style, classroom routines, and settings. Consistent classroom management systems facilitate communications among students, staff, and parents; increase the consistency with which behavior is handled by staff across all setting; ease transitions when students move within and across different school settings; and support high rates of academic engagement and achievement. The ultimate goal is to increase predictability for students, staff, and visitors.

    Teaching with Laptops
    Classroom Management

This page tells you how to use a limited number of laptops in the classroom, how to care for and protect laptops, and how to facilitate student communication on computers. Limited Numbers of Laptops
When laptops are limited, teachers can arrange for group use, rotational use, and free time access of the computers. Students can also check out laptops overnight or during vacations. Care of Laptops
Laptops are portable, which means they can be taken everywhere—even into the mud and the rain. Special care must be taken of these computers, as for all scientific and electronic equipment.
    • Keep all equipment dry and clean. If you are using a laptop where it is wet or muddy, put the keyboard in a clear plastic bag. On field trips, use a dry box and a wet box to separate supplies and equipment. Air-dry all equipment at the end of the activity. For younger classes, adult chaperones can be responsible for equipment.
