Zabreiko In modern times mathematics has become an inseparable part of human culture, in which it plays a fundamental role. Throughout the centuries mathematics has been a crucial tool in the hands of mankind. It has allowed us to understand the fundamental principles of the universe, for example Newton's law of gravity, Einstein's equivalence of mass and energy, Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism, the laws of quantum mechanics for elementary particles, and even the Big Bang theory. The advances in interplanetary exploration and rapid development of computer technology wouldn't have been possible without mathematics.

PHYS 0106 (Historical Geology - 3 credits): This course counts as an "Allied Science" in the WSC core and is normally offered each spring semester.
Course Description: A survey of Earth history (with an emphasis on North America) and of the scientific principles on which that history has been based. The course also provides students with an introduction to scientific methodology and the multifaceted interactions between science, technology and society. Topics to be covered include the interpretation of sedimentary rock sequences in terms of depositional environments, the history of life on Earth as inferred from the fossil record, and a synthesis of Earth history in terms of plate tectonics.

Geol 02C Historical Geology J Bret Bennington A Short History of Historical Geology
    Earth History before historical geology
Prior to the 1600's it was not recognized that the Earth had a history that was more extensive than that outlined in the book of Genesis in the Old Testament of the Judeo-christian Bible. Furthermore, it was not generally acknowledged that the surface of the Earth had anything to say about the history of the Earth.
It was generally assumed that the Earth had changed very little in any substantive way since it was created some 4000 years earlier.
    • All of the animals and plants that lived on the Earth had been present since its creation.
    • Fossils - the remains of past life - were not yet recognized as such.
    • Extinction did not exist in the minds of humankind.
Events in through the 1600's and 1700's would begin to change these views. During this period of time people began to study the Earth and address the question of its origins and history in ways that we would characterize as 'scientific'.
    Nicholas Steno
Perhaps the most significant event in geology in the 1600's occurred one day in October of 1666 when some Italian fishermen landed a large shark in Tuscany. The Grande Duke of Tuscany ordered the head of the shark delivered to Florence to be dissected by an anatomist named

    Cumberland Gap
    National Historical Park
    Kentucky / Virginia / Tennessee

At Cumberland Gap four natural features combine to open the way through the Appalachian Mountain range. At one time this land was flat and Yellow Creek flowed south into Powell River . Then the earth began to push up, and as Cumberland Mountain rose the creek cut in it a notch, or gap. The mountain rose faster than the creek could enlarge the gap and the creek was diverted northward into Cumberland River . North of the gap is Middleboro Basin( 2 ) , a large flat area perhaps formed by the impact of a meteor or the collapse of a huge underground bubble. Yellow Creek Valley leads to "the Narrows" , a gap that crosses Pine Mountain and opens into the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. These four features are a natural door through the mountains, allowing travel in either direction and joining the eastern seaboard with the Mississippi west. top of page

Keweenaw National Historical Park with its rich heritage centered around the copper industry, Calumet and the surrounding areas displays a unique cross-section of cultures, architecture, industry, and history. The park is located in the middle of the Keweenaw Peninsula , which is surrounded by Lake Superior. Its only connection to the rest of Michigan's Upper Peninsula is the Portage Lift Bridge located between Houghton and Hancock. Reports of enormous copper deposits here ignited America's fast mining boom in 1843, a half dozen years before California's gold rush. By 1849, Michigan’s Copper Country provided 85% of the entire United States copper production. These were the richest deposits ever discovered. The mines played an important role in America's Industrial Revolution and performed a crucial mission by supplying copper for military equipment during the Civil War. Between 1867 and 1884 the Red Jacket shaft , at more than 8,000 feet in depth, was the deepest in the world. Calumet and Laurium rest on top of hundreds of miles of shafts, tunnels and drifts. Between 1845 and 1967, the copper mines on the peninsula produced 11 million pounds of copper. Many thousands of immigrants, mostly from Europe, poured into the area between 1845 and 1910. The miners lived in company housing or in surrounding communities with names such as
