Georgia Charter School Information
State Profile Info Last Updated: 03-12-2003
Brief Overview:
In 1993, Georgia first adopted a charter school law. Legislative revisions have been made during the 2002 session to include changes such as an amendment to clarify that the initial term of a charter must be a minimum of 3 years but must not exceed 5 years. As of fall of 2002, there are 36 charter schools in operation serving over 15,100 students. Six others have been approved to open in the fall of 2003.

Welcome to Historic Savannah! Enthralled by the area's lush tropical shoreline and mild climate, the city's founding father, the Englishman James Edward Oglethorpe, landed on the shores of the Savannah River in 1733 and chartered the 13th and final crown colony in the name of King George II. General Oglethorpe's ingenuity brought about a unique design for Savannah based on a grid of broad thoroughfares, braided at regular intervals with spacious public squares, 21 of which still remain. Oglethorpe's creation blossomed into what is today an energetic city featuring shady streets flanked by stunning homes and anchored by a bustling port. Savannah has long been a treasure; in 1864 during the Civil War, General William Tecumseh Sherman, having captured the city for the Union and spellbound by its beauty, deemed it a fitting Christmas present for President Abraham Lincoln. Visitors to Savannah revel in the elegant architecture, ornate ironworks, fountains and lush green squares. Savannah's natural beauty is rivaled only by the city's hospitable reputation, creating one of the country's most popular vacation spots. Guests are truly captivated by the city's charm, the richness of her heritage and all the activities the city offers every day of the year.

About the College of Sciences Since Georgia Tech first opened its doors in 1888, science has been used to drive Georgia Tech forward, endow students with the knowledge to lead in an increasingly technological world, and strengthen Georgia through interaction with industry. Although our contributions have been extensive, the College of Sciences is relatively new. It did not exist until 1990, when the College was created by a separation from the College of Sciences and Liberal Studies. The new College was established in anticipation of the growing importance of interdisciplinary scientific technology-and its establishment has proven to be both wise and timely. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Sta tistics, scientific fields will be among those displaying the most rapid job growth over the coming decade. The College of Sciences comprises seven schoolsBiology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology, each offering both undergraduate (B.S.) and graduate degrees (M.S. and Ph.D) and Applied Physiology, offering an undergraduate certificate and a Professional Masters program. The Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC), which works with K-12 schools and teachers in the state of Georgia to improve science and mathematics education, is also a unit of the College. The College of Sciences provides the courses in mathematics and the natural sciences that are necessary for all Tech undergraduates to acquire skills and basic principles for their majors.

There is no particular advantage for one major relative to another as far as success in application to professional schools. The selection of a major should be made on the basis of individual interests, keeping in mind that your career plans might change. Georgia Weighs Teacher Incentives
The Georgia General Assembly is debating two bills that would give 10-percent annual bonuses to teachers who earn national certification or to experienced educators who transfer or remain in low-performing schools. Legislators hope the measures will improve teacher quality not just in disadvantaged schools but also throughout the state. Included: Descriptions of the incentives in the bills.
Georgia is aiming to boost the number of nationally certified teachers in the state and entice more-experienced teachers to low-performing schools through incentives in two proposed legislative bills. Both bills were passed by the senate of the Georgia General Assembly by late February. Both also have the support of the Georgia Association of Educators , the state's National Education Association affiliate.

Brief History of UGA
When The University of Georgia was incorporated by an act of the General Assembly on January 27, 1785, Georgia became the first state to charter a state-supported university. In 1784 the General Assembly had set aside 40,000 acres of land to endow a college or seminary of learning. At the first meeting of the board of trustees, held in Augusta on February 13, 1786, Abraham Baldwin was selected president of the University. Baldwin, a native of Connecticut and a graduate of Yale University who had come to Georgia in 1784, drafted the charter adopted by the General Assembly. The University was actually established in 1801 when a committee of the board of trustees selected a land site. John Milledge, later a governor of the state, purchased and gave to the board of trustees the chosen tract of 633 acres on the banks of the Oconee River in northeast Georgia. Josiah Meigs was named president of the University and work was begun on the first building, originally called Franklin College in honor of Benjamin Franklin and now known as Old College. The University graduated its first class in 1804. The curriculum of traditional classical studies was broadened in 1843 to include courses in law, and again in 1872 when the University received federal funds for instruction in agriculture and mechanical arts.

January 29, 2003
Public schools in Georgia would have to show annual improvement on standardized tests to avoid being labeled a failing school under strict new guidelines submitted to the federal government. The plan unveiled yesterday requires all schools to post a 100 percent passing rate on state tests by the 2013-14 school year. States have until Friday to tell the U.S. Department of Education how they intend to define a failing school under a year-old federal education law that gives students at low-income schools the right to transfer to better-performing schools or get tutoring at their home schools. The federal law, known as the "No Child Left Behind Act" requires high schools to show consistent improvement in their graduation rates. Any school that fails to make the required progress could eventually see its staff replaced or even be taken over by the state.

Event organizer Rajiv Grover, head of the Marketing Department at UGA's Terry College of Business, said contest co-sponsor General Motors was "very impressed" by the professional caliber of the students' presentations. "I think GM got every penny's worth from this competition," said Grover, who helped frame the event as a "marketing research project competition." Each of the cases addressed General Motors' real world Internet marketing strategies. Five GM executives were on the judging panel, along with a sixth judge from Computerworld magazine. At the end of the contest, the presentations became intellectual property of GM. Keith Denny, a business analyst with e-GM and one of the judges, said the company is already disseminating information and concepts from the recommendations. "It's already making an impact," Denny said. "This is definitely something we want to continue next year."

In contrast, the GM/Terry competition gives the teams only a general description of the situation, putting the onus on them for both framing and solving the problem, he said.
