Appointments and Availability
It is important to note that we primarily serve students on a walk-in basis and that we have a limited number of tutors. For this reason, there may be a wait for tutors from time to time, particularly at the end of the semester and around lunch. Therefore, we advise that you schedule your work to prevent being inconvenienced, especially during these times. The same will be true with the OWL. Although you will not have to wait in line to submit your essay, it will still be tutored on a first come-first served basis and is also subject to a limited number of tutors. Should you choose to make an appointment, they can be made at the front desk of the Writing Center or by calling (817) 272-2601.

Grammar/Mechanics Workshop
Even in this era of technical wizardry and automation, there are some areas where an individual must master specific skills in order to succeed in school and business; Standard English is one of those necessary skills. Our Grammar / Mechanics Program is unique in that it uses the student's own work, instead of the traditional worksheet method, to incorporate learning of Standard Written English rules. Moreover, the program is designed to work around the busy schedules of students. Grammar classes are offered at various times during the spring and fall semesters. (The times are announced shortly after the beginning of each semester.)

2001-2002 GENERAL EDUCATION ASSESSMENT
Executive Summary Analytic Writing Assessment
Tables 1 and 2 illustrate writing outcomes for five sections of English Composition II and five liberal arts exit classes. Displayed are the means for these two groups and the percentage of papers which were judged to be at Level 3 on a five-level scale, indicating a readiness for college instruction, and at Level 4 or above, representing writing competence and the desired level for USF graduates. Although the data for the exit courses suggest that these students are less proficient writers than are students completing English Composition II, this finding must be replicated through additional research before major curricular changes are considered. If, however, one interprets these data alone, one might speculate that after ENC 1102, less attention may be given to the instruction and evaluation of writing skills. If lower writing performance in exit courses is confirmed, adjustments in the curriculum are warranted. Minimal instruction in grammar and mechanics is available to students who may need it, but emphasis is on appropriate limitation of topic and the development of a thesis in a unified, coherent piece of writing. The readings are expository writings that serve as models of standard American usage and as examples of organizational strategies. Course Work: Required Texts: Patterns Plus: A Short Prose Writer (Pat) I also suggest a standard dictionary and thesaurus (not required) Class Policies and Procedures: Attendance Regular attendance is expected and required If a student misses no more than 1 class, he or she may drop his or her lowest theme grade. However, this does not mean that a student may skip writing a theme.

General Evaluation Criteria For Essays
Conception
superior
good
weak
comments:
The essay presents an original idea, or puts a twist on idea presented in class.
The essay takes audience and task into consideration in the presentation of idea.
The essay is focused on a single, significant, carefully worded idea/assertion/statement that addresses the topic.
The essay pursues the idea with depth and substance rather than skirting the surface of the issue and stating the obvious or regurgitating in-class information.
Strategy superior good weak comments: The idea/assertion is supported with quotes and information paraphrased from the text. These quotes and information are correctly cited using proper MLA citation. The quotes are analyzed/explained so that it is easily apparent how they support your reflection. The information is grouped/paragraphed/ sequenced in a logical manner. There is a clear organizational pattern and a logical progression of information.
Style
superior good weak comments: The paper flows smoothly; leads to an interesting statement about topic.

General Considerations
The purpose of written work in the college curriculum is twofold: to improve our students' writing abilities and to enhance their learning experience. Both purposes are best served through: attention to the processes by which good writing is produced assignments that help students to explore or apply the concepts they are studying in a course evaluation that focuses in a constructive fashion on specific aspects of the written work
The Writing Process
Experienced writers generally develop their ideas and organization through a number of stages, which might include note-taking, discussion, outlining, drafting, seeking comments, rewriting, editing, and proofing. Nevertheless, students often have the mistaken idea that to write well means to produce a perfect written product in one sitting. Great improvements in students' writing have been gained by giving more attention to the process of developing a paper through a number of steps. Perhaps the most important steps, in the present context, are Prewriting and Rewriting. Prewriting includes any steps previous to the first draft. Some of these activities may be done in class, others outside.
