(Redirected from Ancient Greek The Greek language is one of the Indo-European languages, brought to Greece by the Achaeans around 1700 BC. Originally there were a variety of spoken dialects, most notably Ionic Doric , and Attic The first known script for writing the language was Linear B . Since classical times, it has been written in the Greek alphabet Attic Greek was the language of Athens ; most of the surviving classical Greek literature is in Attic Greek. Alexander the Great , besides being a great military leader, was instrumental in combining these dialects to form Koine Greek (from the Greek word for "common") (sometimes called New Testament Greek after its most famous work of literature). This allowed his combined army to communicate and was also taught to the inhabitants of the regions that he conquered, turning it into a "world language". The language evolved during the

Ancient Greek Language, History and Culture based on the work of Herodotus
HERODOTUS is an educational software addressed to Greek junior high school pupils, for teaching Ancient Greek Language, History and Culture based on a selected number of extracts from the work of the historian Herodotus.
One of the most innovative aspects of the software is the 'window' to Herodotus' world, which offers the users the chance to find material from antiquity (e.g. description of ancient technology, videos from archeological sites and exhibits in Museums) related to the text under consideration. They can also have access to modern works of art and literature from both Greece and the rest of Europe, which provide evidence of the impact of the Greek historian in modern European civilisation.
The software of HERODOTUS can be used both for self-teaching as well as for guided teaching in junior high school. HERODOTUS is an advanced technological product designed and implemented by ILSP in collaboration with the Department of Classical Philology of the University of Thessaloniki, Ellinogermaniki Agogi and Papassotiriou S.A. It was partially based upon previous work produced within the framework of the program SEIRINES. Price: 9.900 GRD

Introduction Greek is spoken by the 10 million inhabitants of Greece and some 82% of the population of Cyprus, numbering a further half million. It is also spoken around the world in the diaspora of Greeks who have emigrated for political or, far more commonly, economic reasons to the USA, Australia, Britain and elsewhere. In terms of number of native speakers it ranks well down the list of world languages. However, culturally its importance is disproportionate. As the language of classical Greek philosophy and literature and, later, as the language of the Christian Gospels and the early Church it has profoundly shaped Western thought. Like any other language Greek has evolved over the ages, but Modern Greek can justifiably trace its pedigree back through the Athens of Pericles to the Trojan wars and indeed to some of European man’s first attempts at recording his ideas in writing. This very history has been a deep influence on the way Greeks of today view their language and, incidentally, makes it very difficult to precis the history of Greek in the compass of a short essay such as this. Indeed this is a very personal selection of topics related to Greek, largely chosen as having a bearing on aspects of translation of Modern Greek. It is not intended to be a set of working notes for translators of Greek; that would be a far more ambitious project. It is more a brief historical background and a pot-pourri of aspects of the Greek language which we hope may be of interest to the non specialist who occasionally has to deal with Greek, whether in a translation agency, an in-house translation department or as a business person dealing with Greece. We have tried to ensure our facts are correct but we do admit to being guilty of oversimplification at times - unavoidable when dealing with so complex and diverse a subject in such a short space.

Frequently Asked Questions Home Site Map Search
Greek Language and Script
Q: Why are there two blocks of Greek characters in the Unicode Standard? A: The layout of the Greek script in the Unicode Standard is an artifact of the history of Unicode and of ISO/IEC 10646. The Unicode Standard started out with just the Greek block (U+0370..U+03FF), with Greek characters laid out in compatibility with the modern Greek monotonic standard, ISO/IEC 8859-7, and with additions for some Coptic, ancient Greek, and Greek symbol letters. When the Unicode Standard had the repertoire from drafts of ISO/IEC 10646 merged in, as part of the standards compromise which resulted in the synchronization of the Unicode Standard and 10646, the Unicode Standard acquired another collection of pre-composed Greek characters which were intended for polytonic Greek usage. Those had to be placed somewhere, and a "compatibility" block was created at U+1F00..U+1FFF to accommodate them. [KW] A: No. If you examine the code charts for the U+1F00..U+1FFF block of "extended" Greek carefully, you will note that all the polytonic Greek pre-composed characters have canonical mappings. This means that they are canonically equivalent to sequences consisting of the basic letters plus sequences of the basic letters plus combining voicing and accent marks. Any properly constructed Unicode search operation should treat canonical equivalents the same, so it should not matter whether one specifies a target match in terms of the pre-composed characters or in terms of the sequences of basic letters and combining marks. This situation for Greek is no different from the requirement for the Latin script that a search for a pre-composed Latin letter and the same letter with a combining accent mark produce the same results.

and Help with Pronunciation THE NEED TO READ GREEK The texts we will read in this class were not written in English (a language which did not exist at the time these texts were written). Except for the texts on Stoicism (written in Latin), all of the texts were written in Ancient Greek (which is actually rather different from Modern Greek). Because translation always involves interpretation, we will find that a word in the original text may have several possible meanings which a translator does not report to us. It is important, then, that we be able to read and consider some of their most important terms these philosophers use as they originally wrote them in Greek I do not expect you to learn Greek for this course. All I ask of you is that you learn how to pronounce Greek words and that you begin to develop a small vocabulary of important Greek philosophical terms. This web page has information concerning pronunciation of Greek. Please use it as a reference for the development of your reading skills. I will also introduce over the course of the semester different facets of Greek language. In particular, Greek is a highly inflected language this means that words have roots which take different endings depending upon the work they do in a sentence. (This is not unheard of in English: consider, for instance how "goose," "geese," and "gosling" are all related. In English this kind of inflection is most common still in our pronouns, as for example, the pronoun "I" is used as a subject and "me" is used for the object, though they both have the same referent.) Also, Greek has many verb forms.

    60. The Power Of Greek Words
The influence of greek on other European languages.Category Science Social Sciences Historical Linguistics...... of a word, reveals the ancient but familiar greek speech. Many times these greek protolexis , original words, return to the spoken greek language as foreign.
    http://www.addgr.com/art/grwords/power.htm
W e all know that the Greek language is the oldest of all of today's European languages. Although we are not able to define precisely its age, it is without any doubt far more ancient than what we were taught at school. That can be witnessed from the tablets that were concealed for thousands of years from the Greek land and have been revealed during the last century (the last tablet found at Dispelion -Castoria has been dated to be at least 7000 years old). This evidence have made us realize that we really do not know much about the beginning of the Greek language. As the Greek saying goes "Üãåé åéò öùò ôçí áëÞèåéá ï ÷ñüíïò", time brings everything to light, it is definite that at the very end the various misleading or false theories concerning the Greek language will be revoked and this already has started taking place.
Socrates : "The first names have been alterated. Because of euphony they add or they remove some letters . . . They claim that they change them to make them nicer . . . they change through time . . ."
We must not ignore the fact that at the early times the only expression of the Greek language was taking place orally. The Greeks by being sea people "ðïëëá÷Þ êáôÜ èÜëëáôôáí ðëáíþìåíïé, ãëþôôáí ôçí åëëçíéêÞí åðÝâáëïí", they imposed the Greek language. It is well known that over time the acoustic sounds tend to become short and loud.
