The Centre for Classics and Archaeology offers a full stream of study in the ancient languages Ancient Greek and Latin, see Latin . Proficiency in both of these languages at the earliest possible stage is highly recommended for those wishing to specialise in the study of the ancient Greco-Roman world. The ancient languages are thus a fundamental part of the major and the honours program in classics and archaeology, see Classics and archaeology . Both languages are available as streamed programs of study that can be commenced from first/second year. These can commence either at beginners level or the post-VCE stream. The centre also offers a Diploma of Arts (Ancient Languages), which runs concurrently with the arts degree see Diploma of Arts (Ancient Languages)
1. Language study streams
The centre offers two streams of Ancient Greek:
  • beginners
    • The beginners stream is available to students who have little or no knowledge of Ancient Greek. It is available to students at any year level, excluding fourth-year honours, although students intending to study Ancient Greek are advised to commence their language study in their first year.

http://classics.vassar.edu/greek.html
The study of ancient Greek is about learning a language and a lot more. It affords the student with intimate access not only to ancient Greek literature and culture but also to the foundations of Western thought. Works written in ancient Greek have formed the basis for disciplines across the Liberal Arts spectrum from Drama, History, and Philosophy to Art, Mathematics and Physics. Learning to read ancient texts in their original language thus gives student an invaluable foundation from which to build their undergraduate education. Greek is also an extremely rich and precise language. The study of Greek invariably teaches skills of reading, writing, and even thinking that will benefit a student in whatever discipline s/he chooses to pursue. A member of the Indo-European language family, Greek has a continuous literary history which covers three millennia from the Homeric Iliad and Odyssey to the Modern Greek spoken in Greece today. The Greek that we study here is primarily Attic Greek, the Greek of 5th century BCE Athens. It is the language of such authors as Plato, Herodotus, Thucydides, and the tragedians Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Knowledge of Attic Greek allows a student to easily learn Homeric Greek and the dialect in which the New Testament is written, Koine.

The Greek Language Ôhe origin, evolution, influences and current form of the Greek Language.
Briefly Speaking
The Greek language is of Indo-European origin and is spoken and written primarily in Greece and Cyprus. Its history is long and rich and spans a period of 34 centuries from the 14th century BC to date (longer than any other language of Indo-European descent). Through this long period of time, the Greek language evolves in four distinct forms/phases:
  • Ancient Greek (14th - 4th century BC). The original form of language is Mycenaean Greek (14th - 12th century BC), characterized by the use of syllabic script called Linear B . Following the Mycenean Greek, the prominent Greek language form becomes Archaic (Classical) Greek (8th - 4th century BC). A prominent feature of this form is its adoption of the alphabet, and the introduction of new letters and vowels.

  • The break in the evolution of language from the 12th to the 8th century coincides with the destruction of the Mycenean civilization by the Dorian invasions and for nearly 4 centuries very little linguistic progress was recorded.
  • Hellenistic Greek (4th century BC - 4th century AD). Also known as

Throughout the centuries mathematics has been a crucial tool in the hands of mankind. It has allowed us to understand the fundamental principles of the universe, for example Newton's law of gravity, Einstein's equivalence of mass and energy, Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism, the laws of quantum mechanics for elementary particles, and even the Big Bang theory. The advances in interplanetary exploration and rapid development of computer technology wouldn't have been possible without mathematics.

Indo-European Hellenic Greek The Greek language (both ancient and modern) is a member of the Indo-European family of languages; its closest relatives are Armenian, Indo-Iranian, and Italic. The historical evolution of Greek reveals a unity paralleled only in Chinese, and the major changes can be charted in an unbroken literary tradition.
Ancient Greek was spoken in Greece, on Crete and Cyprus, in parts of the eastern Mediterranean and western and northern Anatolia, on Sicily and in southern Italy, on the northern Black Sea coast, and sporadically along the African coast and the French Riviera. Modern Greek is the language of about 9,340,000 people in Greece and the Greek islands and about 480,000 on Cyprus; it is also spoken in isolated villages of Turkey, Sicily, and southern Italy, and in many areas throughout the world to which Greeks have immigrated, notably Australia and North America.
History
Byzantine Greek is notable mainly for its heterogeneity. The koine remained the basis of the language of the early church and of the spoken tongue. Learned writers, however, adhered to an obsolete form of Attic, revived in the aftermath of the Roman conquest in opposition to the koine. Their archaizing Greek replaced Latin as the official language of the Byzantine Empire in the 6th century.

"Anthologio" offers the young learners a chance to realize the continuity of the Greek language and its development through the centuries, excites their interest for the learning of ancient Greek, lets them get accustomed with new ways of presentation of knowledge and build their learning of the ancient Greek language upon their knowledge of modern Greek. The introduction of a strong cultural dimension in the learning of ancient Greek and the emphasis upon the teaching of ancient Greek combined with parallel teaching of other school subjects are two of the most important features of the software. The CD-ROM covers topics like sports/athletics, music, education, men-women relationships and the Aesopian fables and includes sight-seeing of the Ancient Agora of Athens and the archaeological site of Olympia. A considerable number of photographs and videos (museum exhibits, virtual museums, films) support these topics. The presentation is based upon texts of various writers like Aesop, Aristotle, Euripides, Pausanias, Pindar, Plato and Simonides Amorginus. The ancient Greek texts are fully annotated and are accompanied by an original translation in Modern Greek. The software allows for the comparison of the two texts through the use of the technique of parallel speaking texts developed by ILSP.
