Rutherford B. Hayes
19th President of the United States
RUTHERFORD BIRCHARD HAYES
was born on October 22, 1822 in Delaware, Ohio, nearly three months after the death of his father, Rutherford Hayes. The elder Hayes had left his native Vermont in 1817 to emigrate to the West, bringing with him his wife, Sophia Birchard of Wilmington, Vermont, his two young children and his wife’s brother, Sardis Birchard. They settled in the town of Delaware, Ohio, where he purchased an interest in a distillery and built a considerable house. He died of the malarial epidemic that swept the region, leaving his wife with a child on the way, to the care of her brother. Rutherford B. Hayes was a sickly child and when he was three years old, his older brother Lorenzo drowned, leaving his mother very apprehensive of young Rutherford’s health and well-being. She kept him from school in his early childhood and he became timid with an aversion to the rough and mischievous ways of other boys. The boy’s sole companion was his sister Fanny, a bright active tomboy, two years older than himself. When he did attend school, he was an excellent student and gave his teachers no trouble. His uncle Birchard, who had been devoted to the family, took a strong interest in the boy’s schooling and decided to send young Hayes to a tutor in Connecticut where he remained for a year. On his return, he was sent to Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio and he graduated first in his class in 1842.

December 2 Sets of electoral returns were reported for the election of 1876 between Rutherford B. Hayes, Republican, and Samuel J. Tilden, Democrat, in the states of Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Oregon. Tilden, with 184 undisputed electoral votes, one short of a majority, would need to receive at least one of the disputed votes to be elected.
January An electoral commission was established to determine which of the disputed electoral results to use. It was to consist of 7 Democrats, 7 Republicans, and 1 Independent, but when the independent was unable to fulfill his duties, his place was taken by a Republican, and the commission voted on strict partisan lines to award the disputed electors to Hayes. Hayes gained southern support for his election by promising to withdraw federal troops from the south.

William Almon Wheeler Did you know. . . ?
Theodor Herzl (1860-1904), Although he did not invent Zionism, Theodor Herzl is considered the father of the movement that eventually led to the founding of a Jewish state. No stranger to anti-Semitism in his native Austria-Hungary, he was shocked to find it flourishing in Paris when he moved there as a journalist in 1891. Herzl's belief that Jews must organize and emigrate to their homeland displeased assimilationists. But it resonated with nationalistic Jews (in turn heightening nationalist aspirations among Arabs). Herzl organized a world congress in 1897 and later wrote in his diary: "At Basel I founded the Jewish state. If I said this aloud today, I would be greeted by universal laughter. Perhaps in five years, and certainly in fifty, everyone will agree." A half century later Isreal was born.

    Rutherford B. Hayes
A Salute to our 19th President
There is a certain aura of romance surrounding the Presidency. Take a journey with us as we look into the legacy of President Rutherford B. Hayes. Hayes was one of the more interesting presidents, yet is often in the limelight of his predecessor, Ulysses S. Grant.
With the Civil War in the annals of American history, the country slowly entered into a new era docked by new problems such as women’s suffrage, prohibition, and strikes from the mainstream of the country – the railroad and the miners. It seems that Hayes was handed a lemon when he was elected president. What did he do? He made lemonade, of course! Or would that be his wife, Lucy? Until the year 2000, the presidential election of 1876 was the most bitterly contested in United States history. Democrats accused Republicans of fraud and vice versa. It was only two days before President Grant’s term expired when the electoral commission decided in favor of Republican candidate, Rutherford B. Hayes.
President Hayes was a civil war hero, his bravery unquestioned – his courage admired by many. He enjoyed fishing, playing chess, and reading novels – although he referred to novels as ‘trash’. There is much trivia surrounding President Hayes’ term in office and the following is a short list of the more interesting notations occurring during this timeframe.

It probably never covered a bed or was wrapped around cold shoulders, but a 121-year -old quilt is a newfound treasure. Stitched into its multicolored designs is a piece signed by President Rutherford B. Hayes. His inked name is at the quilt's center: "R.B. Hayes 1880." The former president is not the only one who signed the quilt, found in a Seattle second-hand shop and now safe in the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center.

    Rutherford B. Hayes
Hayes ended Reconstruction in the South. He recalled the troops and allowed the South to govern itself. Hayes' major accomplishment was his reform of the civil service. Elected:
    The Early Years
Rutherford Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio. His father had died 11 weeks before Rutherford's birth. He was raised by his mother and his maternal uncle. As a child, Hayes studied under a local schoolmaster. At 14, he attended the Norwalk Academy, a Methodist school run by Jonah Chaplin. The next year, he entered the college preparatory academy of Isaac Webb. At 16, Hayes enrolled in Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, were he graduated as the class valedictorian in 1842. In 1843, Hayes entered Harvard Law School, from which he graduated in 1845. He was admitted to the bar two months later. From 1845 -1858, Hayes ran a legal practice in Fremont, Ohio. From 1858-1861 he served as the Cincinnati City Solicitor. In June, 1861, Hayes enlisted in the Union army. He rose to the rank of Major General, and was wounded in battle several times, becoming a local hero. In 1864, while still in uniform, Hayes was nominated for an Ohio seat in Congress. When it was recommended that he return home from the battlefront to campaign, he responded, "an officer fit for duty who at this crisis would abandon his post to electioneer in Congress ought to be scalped." Needless to say, he won his election, and served in Congress until 1868. He was a supporter of the radical Republicans.
