The LRN Tookit: Giving Customers a Head Start on Online Learning Solutions NEW YORK and REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 8, 2000 When you do things very well, and for a very long time, you tend to get noticed. Take SmartForce, for example, a Redwood City, Calif. based operation that's been providing solutions for eLearning since well before the term was even coined. Just recently, the company picked up a Best of the Best award from PC Computing magazine, accolades from the Smithsonian Institution and a coveted ISO 9002 certification for its quality-management system. Doing things well at SmartForce also means taking notice, especially of customers and their concerns. One of the company's product marketing managers, Scott Trumpower, spends most of his time doing just that listening to customers and trying to learn from what they have to tell him. Lately, customers have been telling Trumpower that what they want most in an eLearning solution is the ability to customize. SmartForce customers want to be able to tailor eLearning solutions to their own corporate environment. In a SmartCourse on Windows NT, for example, system administrators might want to be able to learn how their own company prefers to set up groups in an NT domain. In a solution supporting chat sessions with an online expert, students might want to be able to select someone from their own company's talent pool. Or perhaps in a SmartCourse on C++ programming, development managers might want to be able to insert their company's own documentation guidelines.

March 6, 2003 CONTACTS: Alexa Marrero or
Dave Schnittger
Telephone: (202) 225-4527 Witnesses Testify on Improving Results, Ensuring Accountability in Early Childhood Education Washington, D.C. - The House Subcommittee on Education Reform, chaired by Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE), today heard testimony on the impact of the Head Start program in preparing disadvantaged children for school. Promoting school readiness and improving results for children served by Head Start will be top priorities as Congress prepares to reauthorize the Head Start program this year. “Recognizing the important relationship between the quality of a child’s early experiences and their readiness for school, states and schools are focusing greater attention on the cognitive and social development of young children before they enter kindergarten,” said Castle. “Head Start and other early childhood education programs are often the first line of defense in ensuring that children attain the fundamental skills necessary for optimal reading development and overall school readiness.” “While the resources spent have been significant, results have sometimes been mixed,” continued Castle. “Research shows that children who participate in Head Start are better prepared to enter school than similar children who do not participate in this program. This is evidence that Head Start is working, but I believe we can do better.”

The program curriculum meets the Texas PreKindergarten curriculum guidelines,as well as, those required by the head start Performance Standards.
http://www.esc20.k12.tx.us/headstart/education.htm
Head Start Education and
Early Childhood Development
It is the philosophy of the Education Service Center, Region 20 Head Start Program that young children need to be provided a stimulating, literacy-infused, and responsive environment in which to experience social and cognitive learning. Cultural and linguistic diversity is affirmed and carefully woven to create a tapestry that showcases the strengths and gifts of each child and family. Parental involvement and community support are at the foundation of a child's success.
Home Visits
Teachers are required to make two home visits per year. At the beginning of the school year, in August or September, the teacher and the family set appropriate child development goals for the child. This is also a time to go over key program features. The second visit occurs in April. The teacher and family review the goals established and describe the progress the child has made in each area. The teacher also provides the families with a booklet of activities that the whole family can enjoy doing together during the summer months.
Classroom Curriculum The curriculum being used is one that meets the needs of the program and was written by program teachers, assistants, Family Service Associates, parents, and the management team. It is developmentally and linguistically appropriate, recognizing that children have individual rates of development, as well as, individual interests, temperaments, languages, cultural backgrounds, and learning styles. In addition, it can be easily modified to meet the needs of any children with disabilities who are in the classroom. The program curriculum meets the Texas Pre-Kindergarten curriculum guidelines, as well as, those required by the Head Start Performance Standards.

Curriculum Statement
The Curriculum of the ECASD Head Start Program is rooted in sound child development principles and practices. We believe that it is important to support each individual child in realizing his or her fullest potential. We believe in inclusive practices that allow each child—regardless of ability—to maximize his or her potential. We believe that it is important for each child to be an active participant in the learning process, to make choices and to experience success. We believe that it is vital for parents/guardians to be involved in their child’s education and that curriculum is best implemented in partnership with the family.
To facilitate this curriculum we hire teachers who have bachelor’s or master’s degrees in early childhood education. We work in partnership with the ECASD to support all Head Start staff in their professional development by implementing a strong staff development program. It is the expectation of the ECASD that each employee will continue in the process of life-long learning. Assessment data and child goals are plotted on a classroom map. Teachers use this map as they write lesson plans and individualize activities for children. Assessment data is also collected and aggregated three times per year. The results of this aggregated data are used for program improvement activities that may include staff development activities, material purchases, implementation plans and program goals. This data is available to Head Start staff, Policy Committee/Council, Head Start Advisory Committees, ECASD School Board and the ECASD Curriculum Department.

Introduction
There are ongoing discussions about the best way to teach science to young children during the preschool and early elementary school years ( ). What practices are most likely to contribute to children's development and learning is the question that parents, teachers, and the research communities want answered. We know that young children's thinking is expanded through their cognitive development as well as their personal experiences. Children must explore, ask questions, and revise their thinking to accommodate new ideas ( This article discusses a model that fosters science learning through a systematic approach to understanding language at increasingly higher levels of abstraction by using questioning skills to elicit factual and application information. Language skills are supported with hands-on, visually engaging materials for learning about life science, earth science, and physical science during the primary grades. At the Mid-Atlantic Laboratory for Student Success headquartered at Temple University Center for Research in Human Development and Education, science educators and speech-language specialists have developed a science curriculum that promotes the content of and process for learning about science in contexts that young children can experience and understand.

To assist Head Start programs in their efforts to recruit children with disabilities into their programs, the Chapel Hill Training-Outreach Project has created several new products. The theme "A Special Place for Special Children" includes all Head Start children. As the new poster says: "In Head Start, all children are special, including those with disabilities." Head Start considers each child a unique person with individual strengths and provides an individualized program for the child and the child's family.
