Campo Kumeyaay Main Business History Culture ... Head Start The Campo Band of Kumeyaay Indians operates a Head Start program on 4 Reservations; Barona, Campo, La Jolla, and Santa Ysabel. Each Reservation serves up to 20 children and families. Preschool classes are offered for four hours per day, four days per week, 128 days per year. Each site employs a Head Teacher/Site Coordinator, Teacher Aide, Bus Driver/Teacher Aide, a Cook, and Program Support Specialist. Children are provided a developmentally appropriate curriculum in a stimulating, caring environment. Ongoing training is provided for classroom staff to update their skills and abilities. The goals of the education program are to facilitate the development of both social and academic skills. Children are prepared physically, emotionally, and cognitively for kindergarten. A holistic approach is used to ensure that children are healthy physically and emotionally by facilitating the completion of physical, dental, nutritional, emotional, and developmental screenings for each child. Results of these screenings are also used to individualize the curriculum for each child. Parents are kept abreast of their child's development through the use of home visits and staff-parent conferences. Program Support Specialists work on Family Partnerhsip Agreements with families on home visits. The purpose of these agreements is to assist parents in developing and meeting individual goals for themselves and their families. Program Support Specialists work with community agencies to provide assistance to families enrolled in the program.

Back to Programs and Services REPORT ON HEAD START MONITORING FY 1999 PURPOSE One of the major tools for ensuring quality Head Start services for children and families is on-site monitoring. During an on-site review, a team of qualified reviewers led by a Federal employee assesses whether or not the Head Start program is meeting the Head Start Program Performance Standards and other applicable regulations. In other words, is the Head Start program in that particular community providing quality services to children and their families? In Fiscal Year (FY) 1999, 545 grantees were reviewed with approximately 81 percent found to be providing high quality services to children and their families in all dimensions of their programs. The remaining programs had one or more aspects of their programs that required improvement. The purpose of this report is to provide a more complete summary to Congress on the results of the monitoring process in FY 1999. LEGISLATIVE MANDATE - SECTION 641A Section 641A of the Head Start Act requires that each Head Start grantee receive a full on-site review of all programs, administrative, financial management, and other requirements at least once every three years. Approximately one-third of grantees are, therefore, monitored each year. Additionally, new Head Start grantees are reviewed after completion of the first year of providing Head Start services.

It's mission is to enhance the development of young children and promote healthy families. Comprehensive services are offered to children and families including education, social services, health, nutrition and special services. P arents are involved in all aspects of the program through center committees and Policy Council. They assist with program development including selection of curriculum, program options, interviewing and hiring of staff, budget and planning program changes. Head Start works with many communitiy partners to offer a broad range of services and options to families.
