Andrew Johnson With the Assassination of Lincoln, the Presidency fell upon an old-fashioned southern Jacksonian Democrat of pronounced states' rights views. Although an honest and honorable man, Andrew Johnson was one of the most unfortunate of Presidents. Arrayed against him were the Radical Republicans in Congress, brilliantly led and ruthless in their tactics. Johnson was no match for them. Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1808, Johnson grew up in poverty. He was apprenticed to a tailor as a boy, but ran away. He opened a tailor shop in Greeneville, Tennessee, married Eliza McCardle, and participated in debates at the local academy. Entering politics, he became an adept stump speaker, championing the common man and vilifying the plantation aristocracy. As a Member of the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 1840's and '50's, he advocated a homestead bill to provide a free farm for the poor man.

During the secession crisis, Johnson remained in the Senate even when Tennessee seceded, which made him a hero in the North and a traitor in the eyes of most Southerners. In 1862 President Lincoln appointed him Military Governor of Tennessee, and Johnson used the state as a laboratory for reconstruction. In 1864 the Republicans, contending that their National Union Party was for all loyal men, nominated Johnson, a Southerner and a Democrat, for Vice President.

March 22, 1875 Andrew Johnson was born in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1808, and like the previous North Carolina born presidents, Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk, he was elected to office from Tennessee. Although a native of the South, Johnson was a firm supporter of the Union. During the desperate days of the Civil War, he served as the military governor of Tennessee and finally as vice-president under the second term of Abraham Lincoln. After Lincoln's assassination, the heavy task of restoring a nation after the ravages of a civil war fell to the tailor from North Carolina. Andrew Johnson began his life in a small wooden house which is still preserved in Raleigh. His parents, Jacob and Mary Johnson, maintained the home by working for Casso's Inn, a popular inn and stable. The Johnson home stood on the property of the inn. Andrew's mother was a weaver for the Casso's Inn while Jacob Johnson was the inn's hostler as well as the janitor for the State Capitol. Andrew was the younger of two sons born into the Johnson family. Jacob Johnson rescued two friends from drowning in 1812 but died from over-exertion, leaving Mary to raise Andrew and his brother William. In an effort to provide a trade for her sons, Mary Johnson apprenticed her sons to a tailor in Raleigh when Andrew was fourteen.

7. Senator Bill Clinton?
If you think you're rid of Bill Clinton when he leaves the White House, that might just be wishful thinking on your part. The New Yorker ran a little blurb suggesting that Clinton may be considering a 2002 run for the Senate in his home state of Arkansas. Although only one president andrew johnson later served as a us senator after leaving office, the real interest here is what it means for the HillaryBill pairing. With Mrs. Clinton expressing an interest in living in New York, whether or not she runs for the Senate herself, a lot of people see it as a sign that the First Marriage is in trouble. When a reporter asked Clinton about The New Yorker article, the president ignored the question. Wired News

    Biography
    Johnson, Andrew (1808-1875),
PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . He was elected VICE PRESIDENT in 1864 and became president after the assassination of Abraham LINCOLN Early Life and Career Johnson was born on Dec. 29, 1808, in Raleigh, N.C., the younger of two sons. His father was a porter who died in 1811 after saving a man from drowning. His mother supported the family by spinning and weaving cloth in their Raleigh cottage. At the age of 14, Johnson was apprenticed to a tailor. The spirit of democracy meshed well with Johnson's own resentments and ambitions. Poor in his youth and still a tailor without pretensions of social rank, he stressed the egalitarian, anti-aristocratic strain of Jacksonian democracy, as well as its distrust of government at all levels. An active, powerful government, insisted Johnson and other radical Jacksonians, was subject to manipulation by the rich and powerful. He maintained that the Constitution should be construed strictly and opposed national government encroachments on "states' rights." But unlike many Democrats, he urged that similar principles be applied to the state governments. This led him into conflict with the western Tennessee Democratic leadersslaveholders who dominated the party. Rise in National Politics Johnson was elected to the state legislature in 1835, 1839, and 1841, and to the U.S. Congress in 1843. He expressed his constitutional principles by voting consistently against the tariff, internal improvements, higher salaries for government employees, or any other "extravagance." Gerrymandered out of Congress in 1852 by a Whig legislature, he won the Democratic nomination for governor in 1853, finally gaining control of the party from his Tennessee opponents. He barely defeated the Whig candidate and served two terms from 1853 to 1857, when he was elected to the U.S. Senate.

    Biography

Andrew Johnson became the 17th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES after the assassination of Abraham LINCOLN , on Apr. 15, 1865. As president he was the focal point of a struggle over how to restore the Union after the Civil War. The contest over Reconstruction became so bitter that he was IMPEACHED by the HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES and tried before the U.S. SENATE , which ultimately found him not guilty of the charges. Early Life Johnson was born in Raleigh, N.C., on Dec. 29, 1808. His family, already poor, was left destitute by the death of his father 4 years later. When he was 14 his mother apprenticed him to a tailor. Johnson never received a formal education; he learned the rudiments of reading and writing from the foreman in his place of work. In 1826, Johnson and his family moved to eastern Tennessee, and a year later he opened his own tailor shop in Greeneville. On May 17, 1827, Johnson married Eliza McCardle, the daughter of a shoemaker. She furthered his education, teaching him arithmetic and improving his reading and writing. Ambitious to rise from his humble origins and resentful all his life of those at the pinnacle of society, Johnson and his friends founded a political organization that soon replaced Greeneville's traditional leaders.
