Educating New Mexico for a Better Tomorrow

SER de New Mexico provides unique, one-on-one, individualized Adult Basic Education and GED services. Our goal is to serve those people who don't do well in the "traditional" classroom environment.
The SER de New Mexico ABE/GED program is currently offered at the Human Services Division in the Town of Bernalillo, at West Mesa, Barelas, and Whittier Community Centers in Albuquerque, and the UNM Homeless Youth program in Albuquerque. This program is the first of its kind to serve these areas.
Unlike the traditional classroom approach to education, we understand that many students are more successful in one-on-one interactions. SER's unique approach in providing these services include matching a qualified, trained volunteer to work with each student so that the individual may reach his or her goals. The fact that all people learn differently is an idea that we endorse.
Our ABE/GED program matches individual students with tutors who meet their academic needs (Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, and Science). Students meet with their tutors 2-5 times a week in order to prepare for the GED examination or develop their Adult Education skills. Our tutors are trained and competent literacy volunteers, and are committed to the achievement of his or her student. We teach students not only how to prepare for the test; but we also cultivate an overall curiosity towards learning, a curiosity which is imperative in any environment.

13. Objectives Of General Education
Objectives of general education UniversityWide Program in general education for Undergraduate Students at new mexico State University Approved by the Board of Regents, May 12, 1989
http://www.nmsu.edu/~gened/geo.html
Objectives of General Education University-Wide Program in General Education for Undergraduate Students at New Mexico State University Approved by the Board of Regents, May 12, 1989 PREAMBLE More than ninety-five percent of the faculty were in agreement with the following statement of objectives of general education. The statement is given here to emphasize the point that all recommendations as to specific subject areas or courses listed below should be judged in terms of meeting these objectives to the greatest extent possible. General education attempts to foster intelligent inquiry, abstract logical thinking, critical analysis, and the integration and synthesis of knowledge; it strives for literacy in writing, reading, speaking, and listening; it teaches mathematical structures, acquainting students with precise abstract thought about numbers and space; it encourages an understanding of science and scientific inquiry; it provides a historical consciousness, including an understanding of one's own heritage as well as respect for other people and cultures; it includes an examination of values and stresses the importance of a carefully-considered values system; it fosters an appreciation of the arts; and general education provides the breadth necessary to have a familiarity with the various branches of human understanding. In addition, the members of the General Education Committee clearly recognize that no significant improvement in general education is likely to occur unless the faculty most suited are engaged in trying to convey to students the intellectual pleasures of the various subject areas which have been selected here. Also, we recognize that the curriculum proposed represents a minimal requirement, and we would encourage colleges and departments to add to these courses those which they deem most appropriate for developing broadly educated graduates.

General Screening - Overview The student assistance process goes into place when a staff member or parent suspects that a student is having a problem after he or she is already in school. The student is referred to a Student Assistance Team (SAT). The SAT meets and determines possible interventions for the student and an intervention plan is developed. After the completion of the intervention period, the SAT meets again to evaluate the results of the intervention. If the interventions are successful and the student is improving, the student is dropped from the SAT process. If the interventions have not been successful, the SAT may choose an alternative intervention plan and try it out with a second reasonable time frame.

$7.8 Million in Special Education General Supervision Enhancement Grants Awarded to 24 States, Territories and Outlying Areas
More than $7.8 million in grants have been awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to 24 states, territories and outlying areas for special education improvement efforts as part of a competitive process to help reform and improve services for children with disabilities. A total of 42 states, Puerto Rico and outlying territories competed for the awards, known as General Supervision Enhancement Grants. The grants are intended to complement and support the accountability system developed by the department’s Office of Special Education Programs by assisting states and lead agencies to develop and improve their infrastructure for holding states, districts and schools accountable for improving student achievement. "Accountability for improved performance rests at the heart of our efforts to improve American education," said U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige. "These awards will help move us toward assuring that our special education programs are offering quality educational services to all students with disabilities so that no child is left behind." Activities supported by the grants include:
  • developing data-driven, evidence-based state monitoring systems that focus on areas that have the greatest impact on better outcomes for children with disabilities;
