Practicing Virtues
Moral Traditions at Quaker and Military Boarding Schools
Publication Date: February 1994 Subjects: Sociology Philosophy Education Rights: World Clothbound
Out of Stock Description About the Author
"Kim Hays has returned to one of the deepest sources of sociology: the empirical study of morality. . . . Her beautifully written and analytically incisive book sheds light on issues important not only to the social sciences but to moral philosophy as well."Robert N. Bellah, co-author, Habits of the Heart "Kim Hays has given us an elegant and valuable study of culture and morality. She exploits her method of paired contrasts (Quaker and military boarding schools) inventively and to the maximum. Rarely have I seen a work that so well combines scholarly dispassion with appreciation and respect for those studied. Above all, the work teems with original insights, expressed with exceptional grace and clarity, on the the concrete grounding of moral presuppositions in institutions, attitudes, and behavior."Neil J. Smelser, University of California, Berkeley "This is a fascinating, richly textured account of the moral development of adolescents within boarding schools grounded in two strong moral traditions. Although military service and Quakerism appear to be polar opposites, Kim Hays artfully analyzes what they have in common as well as their differences. She discovers the difficulty adolescents have grasping the sacred quality of both traditions, while illuminating how conflicts strengthen and focus moral principles. By demonstrating the importance of moral legacies for forming adolescent identities, the book is invaluable for anyone concerned about education, adolescent development, or the relationships between morality and everyday life."Caroline Hodges Persell, New York University

The Education of Asian/Pacific American Students
Asian/Pacific American students have always been portrayed as overachievers because of their high levels of educational attainment, especially in math and science. The emphasis on educational success has often been linked to Asian family values, beliefs, and practices. The cultural respect for education, teachers, and hard work has been identified quite often with various Asian/Pacific American groups: Cambodian, Chinese, East Indian, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Pakistani, Vietnamese. Yet, in order to have a better understanding of their educational experience, educational researchers are advocating further investigation into the variables affecting school acculturation and achievement patterns for Asian/Pacific American students. The following sites take a closer look at the academic performance of Asian/Pacific American students by examining their relationships to teachers, parents, and schools.

The Hotel A legend among Manhattan hotels since 1930, this special oasis provides a quiet and genteel "home away from home" for sophisticated travelers. The 180 rooms and suites offer elegant views of Central Park and Manhattan’s Upper West side. Gracious and romantic formal dining awaits guests in the Carlyle Restaurant, while entertainer Bobby Short, an icon for more than three decades, creates the quintessential New York cabaret experience in the famed Café Carlyle. Location Superbly positioned on chic Madison Avenue, The Carlyle is surrounded by galleries and designer boutiques of New York’s smart Upper East Side. Minutes from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Whitney and the Frick, the hotel is within easy reach of what is commonly referred to as the "Museum Mile." Most rooms have views of Central Park. History
Residential hotels, popular in the late 1920s, provided, according to one newspaper account, "freedom from drudgery, the servant problem, plus the many responsibilities that go with maintaining large private homes…" During WWII, the Carlyle guest profile consisted of families visiting en route to boarding schools, debutantes, charity bridge players, bridal parties and early versions of charity fund raisers termed "bundling parties" where society ladies carried with them to The Carlyle, bundles of used clothing for the needy.
The Carlyle’s guest list reads like a Who’s Who of world affairs, business and entertainment. Every American President since Truman has visited. Its rich history includes visiting Royals and heads-of-state. HRH, The Prince of Wales, the late Diana, Princess of Wales, their Majesties, the Kings and Queens of Denmark, Greece, Italy, Spain and Sweden have all visited.

Mr. Julius Bates was the first principal of the Collegiate Institute and served as Professor of Mathematics and Languages as well. He came from the nearby Gaines Academy and held an A.B. degree. This highly respected and admired school official combined both scholarly interest and management skills to effectively run the school and still make a profit. Mr. Bates received a salary of $800 a year to act as principal and collect all tuition bills. From this collected money and other sums he received from the state Regents board, Julius Bates was to pay the salaries of other teachers and operating expenses. If the income did not stretch, his salary would suffer. Ultimately, the success or failure of this plan would direct the security of the institution. Oliver Morehouse, 1845-1846

United Nations Children's Fund United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Children
Brings World Leaders to New York on 8-10 May 2002

Originally scheduled to take place in September 2001 but postponed following the attacks in New York City and Washington, the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Children brought some 60 Heads of State and Government to New York for three days 8-10 May.
The Special Session, an end-of-decade follow-up to the 1990 World Summit for Children, presented world leaders with a detailed review of what has been achieved for children and what has not been achieved toward the improvement of the children state in the world. Focussing on how investment in children’s education, health, and protection contributes to global stability and peace, the Special Session on Children concluded with the adoption of a new set of global goals focused on children and an action plan to reach them.
The session was attended also by Armenian delegation, led by the Armenian Minister for Social Security Razmik Martirossian. The Armenian delegation also included the representatives of Foreign Ministry, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and Science as well as the representatives of a number of non-governmental organizations and young people.
