Norway's Geography Page Norway is a very mountainous country with a rough terrain. It is long and narrow, running north to south, with a bulge at the southern end. The upper third of Norway lies in the Arctic Circle. It borders Sweden, the USSR, and Finland. It has a very long, craggy coastline that runs along the Atlantic Ocean and the Norwegian Sea. The coastline has many inlets and fjords along it. The coastline itself is about 1647 miles long, but with the fjords included, has a distance of 13,267 miles, which is approximately the distance around the world. The three main land regions of Norway are the Mountainous Plateaus, the Southeastern Lowlands, and the Trondheim Lowlands. Covering most of Norway is the Mountainous Plateau. The terrain in this region is rugged with many deep lakes, valleys and smoothed rocks formed by glaciers. Any area above 6,500 feet is permanently covered with snow. In the Northern part of Norway, the Kjolen Mountains run along the border with Sweden. Higher mountains can be found in the south such as the Dovre Mountain. Even further south lie the Long Mountains. The Southeaster Lowlands are located at the middle and lower valleys of the Glamma River and several other minor rivers. The rivers provide waterways for timber to float down to sawmills and pulpmills. The many rapids and waterfalls provide a perfect source of hydroelectricity. Narrow lakes cover the land. The gentler slopes of this region make it better equipped for forestry and farming.
