Paleontology at KU
The Program
Paleontology at The University of Kansas is studied in five academic departments: Geology, Systematics and Ecology, Botany, Anthropology, and Geography. Some paleontologists in these academic departments also have joint appointments in the Natural History Museum, the Museum of Anthropology, the Kansas Geological Survey, or the Paleontological Institute. The Geological Survey has a long tradition of research in paleontology and sedimentology, especially carbonate petrology. Staff members of the Survey often teach courses and direct the research of graduate students in the academic departments, especially in the Department of Geology. The University recently entered into a joint agreement with Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, whereby faculty members in the KSU Department of Geology can direct the doctoral dissertation research of geology students at KU, thus offering a wider level of expertise for graduate students.
Paleontology is interpreted broadly herein and is practiced widely at The University of Kansas. It involves invertebrate paleontology, especially the study of Paleozoic faunas; vertebrate paleontology, especially the higher vertebrates; Paleozoic and Mesozoic paleobotany; Quaternary palynology; and paleoanthropology. In addition, the study of paleoecology and the interpretation of ancient environments play an important role in the studies, often involving interactions with sedimentologists, Quaternary geologists, geomorphologists, biologists, and archaeologists.

COMPLEX STRATIGRAPHIC SERIES
IN BELGIAN CAVES: CORRELATION WITH THE PALEOCLIMATIC VARIATIONS DURING MIDDLE AND UPPER PLEISTOCENE
( Paper presented at Bergen Meeting, Aug., 1996) Yves Quinif
C entre d’Etudes et de Recherches Appliquees au Karst (CERAK), Faculte Polytechnique de Mons,
Rue de Houdain, 9; B-7000 Mons-Belgique The message of endokarstic sediments Deposits in karstic cavities are very good indicators of palaeoenvironmental conditions. But the message is complex. We can recognize four influences. Geological environment determines mineralogical and sedimentological nature of the detritic sediments. Tectonic evolution modifies the energetic inputs into the karstic network and determines the nature of the sedimentation (high or low energetic levels). Climatic factors, of course, have a determining role through the biorhexistasy. Finally, human actions modify very much the "natural" mechanisms. Thus, the sedimentary recordings in caves reflect, because of their stratigraphic complexity, many parameters in which climate is only one. Fig.1:

Pacific-Antarctic Basin
One of three major basins in the Southern Ocean . It extends from its western border with the Australian-Antarctic Basin at the longitude of Tasmania (about 145 E) to its eastern border with the Atlantic-Indian Basin at the Scotia Ridge and Drake Passage (about 70 W). It consists of the Amundsen Bellingshausen , and Mornington Abyssal Plains and is separated from the basins further north in the Pacific by the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge and the East Pacific Rise in the east and by the Chile rise in the east.
Pacific Deep Water
In physical oceanography, a water mass type found in the Pacific Ocean in the depth range from 1000-3000 m. It does not participate much in the overall circulation and as such its properties are determined mostly by slow mixing processes. It is composed of a mixture of AABW NADW and AAIW , and has a characteristic salinity from 34.60-34.65 and a temperature around 2 C. See Tomczak and Godfrey (1994) , p. 159.

palynology INSTRUCTION The infrequently. The following is a list of institutionswhere palynologyrelated instruction is mentioned online.
    http://www.geo.arizona.edu/palynology/classes.html
PALYNOLOGY INSTRUCTION The details of palynological education world-wide are not known - neither the number of classes taught nor the level of instruction. It apparently ranges from brief mention in 1 lecture of an undergraduate class, to graduate level instruction on pollen morphology. There are many trained palynologists in academic institutions, more in geology than in any other field, but many of these academicians do not teach palynology-related courses, or they teach them infrequently.
The following is a list of institutions where palynology-related instruction is mentioned online. Wherever possible the course titles are listed, or graduate programs are named.
Only internet-available citations are included, but other courses surely are taught. For a more comprehensive list of North American palynologists at academic institituions see http://geo.arizona.edu/palynology/web_acad.html . And, for a list of academic and other palynologists' web pages see http://geo.arizona.edu/palynology/web_pal.html Since first posted in 1999, the number of palynology-related classes online has declined. Several are no longer listed, and I have found no new ones. It has declined from 37 to 33. The decline is actually greater due to recent retirements of faculty, "who are still on the books." One insitituion no longer permits off-site viewing of web sites. This page is offered as part of a public dialog on palynological education at all levels. I will gladly list classes for which there is no internet documentation, if a class description or outline is provided to be posted. Please send all comments to
