JOIN NYPTA IN FIGHTING CUTS TO THE EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAM!
On Thursday, April 10th, NYPTA will launch a "virtual lobby day" by having its members contact New York legislators in their district offices (by phone, fax and/or email) urging them to reject cuts to the early intervention program. NYPTA also urges those working in the early intervention setting to reach out to co-workers, peers and parents with whom they work to make similar calls on the 10th. [more]

Patient Choice to Direct Access:
NOW is the time
Now is the time to carry the momentum made in 2002 into 2003 and to stay connected with your legislator. New York State does, indeed, have a unique body of legislators. It is said by many that it is very hard to get a bill passed in NY, however, it is not impossible. There are no term limits and most of the incumbents are reelected. Given the strong networking developed over the years, we have a chance to continue the relationships built with the legislators that are key decision-makers. Passing a law in NY happens when people persevere with their message. The alarm on that clock is ringing - now is the time for direct access.

    Significant Points
    • Employment is expected to increase faster than the average, as rapid growth in the number of middle-aged and elderly individuals increases the demand for therapeutic services. After graduating from an accredited physical therapist educational program, therapists must pass a licensure exam before they can practice.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Physical therapists (PTs) provide services that help restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering from injuries or disease. They restore, maintain, and promote overall fitness and health. Their patients include accident victims and individuals with disabling conditions such as low back pain, arthritis, heart disease, fractures, head injuries, and cerebral palsy. Therapists examine patients' medical histories, then test and measure their strength, range of motion, balance and coordination, posture, muscle performance, respiration, and motor function. They also determine patients' ability to be independent and reintegrate into the community or workplace after injury or illness. Next, they develop treatment plans describing a treatment strategy, its purpose, and anticipated outcome. Physical therapist assistants, under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist, may be involved in implementing treatment plans with patients. Physical therapist aides perform routine support tasks, as directed by the therapist. (

    Significant Points
    • Employment is projected to increase much faster than the average, as rapid growth in the number of middle-aged and elderly individuals increases the demand for therapeutic services. Licensed physical therapist assistants have an associate's degree, but physical therapist aides usually learn skills on the job. More than two-thirds of jobs for physical therapist assistants and aides were in hospitals or offices of physical therapists.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Physical therapist assistants and aides perform components of physical therapy procedures and related tasks selected by a supervising physical therapist. These workers assist physical therapists in providing services that help improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering from injuries or disease. Patients include accident victims and individuals with disabling conditions, such as low back pain, arthritis, heart disease, fractures, head injuries, and cerebral palsy. Physical therapist assistants perform a variety of tasks. Components of treatment procedures performed by these workers, under the direction and supervision of physical therapists, involve exercises, massages, electrical stimulation, paraffin baths, hot and cold packs, traction, and ultrasound. Physical therapist assistants record the patient's responses to treatment and report to the physical therapist the outcome of each treatment.
