Welcome to the Nicholas Institute of Sports Medicine and Athletic Trauma
Lenox Hill Hospital in 1973. Since its founding as a research, teaching and clinical center, NlSMAT's approach to the treatment of athletic injuries has brought a new perspective to the relationship between exercise and fitness in all age groups. Its ongoing work provides information relevant to everyone who participates in exercise or sports, whether it is a child at play or an elderly person exercising to keep fit, a weekend athlete or a marathon runner. NISMAT is a major contributor to the science of sports medicine. Once perceived as discipline concerned only with repairing athletes' traumatic injuries, sports medicine is now recognized as a medical science that is expanding the understanding of the body's integrated response to all forms of physical activity. NISMAT's mission is to offer excellent sports medicine clinical services, multidisciplinary research and education to both allied health professionals and the community at large, and to provide its staff with the best resources available to accomplish the goals of the organization.

Physical Therapy Corner: Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
More than just a pain in the neck. Thoracic outlet syndrome is actually a collection of syndromes brought about by abnormal compression of the neurovascular bundle by bony, ligamentous or muscular obstacles between the cervical spine and the lower border of the axilla.
What does that mean?
First of all a syndrome is defined as a group of signs and symptoms that collectively characterize or indicate a particular disease or abnormal condition.
  • The neurovascular bundle which can suffer compression consists of the brachial plexus plus the C8 and Tl nerve roots and the subclavian artery and vein.
  • The brachial plexus is the network of motor and sensory nerves which innervate the arm, the hand, and the region of the shoulder girdle.
  • The vascular component of the bundle, the subclavian artery and vein transport blood to and from the arm, the hand, the shoulder girdle and the regions of the neck and head.

From The Director of Colorado Physical Therapy Institute Self-Help Program Synopsis Background Proceed with the Program About Colorado Physical Therapy Institute ... Physical Therapy Aids
Check our prices on Ergonomic, Magnetic and Physical Therapy Aids! From those who work with computers on a daily basis to assembly line workers, repetitive motion injury cases are increasing at an alarming rate. However, symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are not limited only to the work place. Pregnancy has been known to bring on such symptoms. Sleeping in certain positions also plays a part. Stress in all its forms also plays a major role. Eating habits, tobacco and alcohol consumption, repetitive motion related to sports, the playing of musical instruments and many other factors all contribute to the break down of tissues in the body that lead to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. A study by the Kemper National Insurance Companies showed that work-place injuries that go unreported for 30 days or more are more than 50 percent more costly than those reported within the first 10 days of the occurrence. Why the boost in expense? Kemper reasons that early reporting leads to early treatment! Make no mistake. If you are experiencing the symptoms associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and continue to repeat the same actions that created this condition over an extended period of time, the consequences are severe. Once Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has progressed beyond a certain point, it may require surgery to correct the problem.
