DINOSAURS AND OTHER PREHISTORIC ANIMALS
by Darlene Geis Pictures by R.F. Peterson Another dinosaur book by the author of the How and Why Wonder Book of Dinosaurs . It's interesting how many female authors wrote these books which were mostly aimed at little boys. The coolest thing about this particular book is that it makes an appearance in the American version of King Kong vs. Godzilla (1963). There, a noted scientists holds up the book and explains that Godzilla is a cross between the Allosaurus depicted on the cover and the Stegosaurus shown inside. Conceptually this is obviously correct. But scientifically, such a pairing is as likely as a tiger mating with a giraffe! Allosaurus makes eyes at... ...its unlikely mate, Stegosurus. Do you know the answers to these dinosaur questions? Don't rely on popular images from dinosaur movies or cartoons! They're frequently wrong.
  • Were all huge, prehistoric animals dinosaurs?
  • Did any dinosaurs swim or fly?
  • Were all the dinosaurs huge?
  • Did cavemen live alongside the dinosaurs?
  • Did all the dinosaurs live at the same time?
  • Did all the dinosaurs die out?
  • Why were the dinosaurs a failure? Not all huge prehistoric animals were dinosaurs. A lot of animals existed during the Mesozoic along with the dinosaurs. Some animals were closely related to the dinosaurs, like the pterosaurs (which belong to the Order Archosauria as do the dinosaurs). Birds, however, are dinosaurs! Other animals, like the Dimetrodon , which lived in the Paleozoic era before the dinosaurs existed, are more closely related to us than to the dinosaurs.

    01 EUSTHENOPTERON (Greek:'strong fin')
The ancestors of the four-legged land vertebrates are to be found among the fleshy-finned fishes. The only surviving fleshy-fins, however, are the famous coelacanth (Latimeria) of the Indian Ocean and three genera of lungfish, all of which are cousins of the land vertebrates rather than their ancestors. More typical was Eusthenopteron from the Upper Devonian (350 million years ago) of North America and Europe. This carnivorous fresh-water fish, 1-2 feet long, had lobe like fins with strong muscular bases, nostrils which opened into the mouth and primitive lungs. In times of drought It could crawl on land from pool to pool in search of water and food. 02 ICHTHYOSTEGA (Greek: 'fish roof')
Half-way from fleshy-finned fish to amphibian was lchthyostega, 3 feet long, from rocks of eastern Greenland laid down in fresh water at the end of the Devonian period (345 million years ago). It still had a tail-fin like that of a fish and a remnant of the bones covering the gill-chamber but it is considered to be the earliest known amphibian because of the well developed limbs and limb girdles which are essentially those of a land animal, and the backbone was strengthened to support its weight when out of water. lchthyostega was probably truly amphibious in its habits. 03 ERYOPS (Greek: 'long face')
This was a typical member of the labyrinthodonts, the large amphibians of the Carboniferous, Permian and Triassic. Eryops itself lived in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico in Early Permian times (about 260 million years ago). It was a large, bulky animal, 5-6 feet long, which probably lived a truly amphibious life like that of modern crocodiles; the rather flattened head, armed with big teeth, suggests that it was a fish-eater. The backbone and other parts of the skeleton were very strongly built; it crawled slowly and awkwardly on its belly, pushing with its short bent legs. Bony nodules in the leathery skin formed a heavy armour.

    Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Animals
The World a Million Years Ago
Inside the dome was a moving concourse that carried visitors around the exhibit. First you passed groups of prehistoric men and displays of prehistoric animals. Then there was one huge pit with ten of the large monsters swaying, stamping, and roaring in a realistic swamp-jungle setting. A Dinosaur was 50 feet long with a neck reach of 16 feet. A Prehistoric Ape was 10 feet tall. The Mammoth weighed 4 tons. Inside the Mammoth were 16 motors, giving him 32 primary and 800 secondary motions. Other animals included the Platybelodon (shovel-jawed elephant), Giant Ground Sloth, Sabre-toothed Tiger, Wooly Rhinocerus, and Brontosaurus. The cries emitted by the animals were based on the shapes of their throats and thoraxes, which led to inferences about the volume and character of their chest tones.
Mammoth Mammoth is the Russian name for an extinct species of gigantic elephant which roamed the black, cold regions of the earth during the Pleistocene Peeriod. Towering at a height of ten to twelve feet, the Mammoth weighed about twenty tons and was thickly covered with hair. The tusks of the Mammoth curved upwards and ranged from ten to twelve feet in length.
Ground Sloth This strange beast was one of the most peculiar animals that lived during the Pliocene Period. It had enormous hindquarters on which it stood, while its short strong forearms were used to uproot trees, which in due course, were used for food.

J. G. Savage, Brian Gardiner, Douglas Dixon Hardcover 312 pages Revised and Updated edition (October 1999) in print This is a very good non-technical introduction to prehistoric vertebrates . Although there is a brief coverage of basic background topics - how fossils form, continental drift, etc - by the far the most interesting, and indeed the bulk, of the book is the coverage it gives to a large number of individual genera (more than 600 altogether, from primitive fish to Pleistocene mammals), each of which is illustrated by a specially commissioned full-colour painting. It is the sheer number and diversity of creatures covered here, that makes this book so interesting. (But even that diversity is just a tiny fraction of all the types of prehistoric creatures that are known to science). The realism of the art work tends to vary - some drawings seem to me more realistic than others, but I suppose that's just personal taste. The art work is still of good quality thoughout though, and often represents the only life-reconstructions available for creatures otehrwsie shown only as drawings of skeletons in
