29 North next to Gold’s Gym.
For all those not familiar with my reviews, I use a “Star” based rating system with 1 being “Just Plain Bad” and 5 being “Not To Be Missed”.
Maharaja is a Charlottesville dining experience that is quite easy to overlook as it is in a very unassuming strip mall near and military recruiter and a gym! I have found that many of my favorite restaurants have similar settings and I forgive the modest appearance for and emphasis on the food within.
Once you get past the dreary exterior things pick up a bit. The site has a large outdoor patio that is comfortable and shaded complete with a small fence to keep children in and passersby out.
Inside the doors you are greeted with an oddly shaped room with a nice carved bar taking up the left-hand wall and the dinning area opening into a kidney shape to your left. Prompt attention from the hostess and a friendly wave from the bartender have always greeted me even during peak hours.
The site has about a fifty fifty selection of booths or tables complete with red checkered plastic tablecloths. Crystal and silverware are middling quality at best, and many of the wall decorations and table show their years of use.

Strange Wine
Humans are by nature curious creatures, and wine is one of our earliest discoveries. So it is natural to assume that we have experimented with several ways of making wine over the ages. Grapes are the most common source of wine in modern culture, but other fruit wines can also be found in abundance. Mead , a honey-based wine, is also quite popular. And we occasionally hear references to somewhat more exotic wines, like rosehip wine . American winemakers have been particularly innovative, especially in regions which are not conducive to growing grapes of the noble variety (cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, etc.). Dandelion wine is a popular choice. Need a recipe to make your own? Try one of these: Some friends of ours began delving into the art of home winemaking a couple years back. When they sent us a bottle of their ginger wine, I was pleasantly surprised When they told me they had tried to make a basil wine, I was mildly puzzled, but intrigued. When they created a batch of coffee wine and then sent us a bottle I was downright frightened. How far must we push the envelope? As a scientist, I applaud efforts to discover new and exciting possibilities. But

Back to the Regency collection This section is just an odd collection of strange stories that I've come across that I think might interest people. I have often either read in novels things that make me wonder if the author read about these characters, or if is was just coincidence. Anyway, if you have another story you think might be good here then email me about it.
    The Wicked Lord
Byron's great-uncle, the fifth Lord Byron, was also known as - 'The Wicked Lord' and with good reason. Just about any story on Byron's great-uncle involves some kind of scandal and they are too numerous to list here. But there is one particular incident that is just plain bizarre. On a carriage trip he became violently angry that his coachman was not driving quickly enough so he shot him, throwing the body inside the carriage, with his naturally a slightly distressed wife, and drove the carriage back himself.
    A gambling debt resolved
Although I have dealt with this in Charles Fox I think it is worthwhile repeating in case anyone hasn't read that page.

It's fascinating and revolting, bizarre and breathtaking. Above all, it is informative, and if you give it even a few minutes of your time, it is sure to lead you to reexamine your assumptions about what constitutes "acceptable" food. And in case you were wondering, Hopkins not only provides recipes for the many unfamiliar foods he discusses, but also lists sources for the items in question. So, no, do NOT simply pluck that house mouse out of the spring-trap and toss it into a broiler pan! Get your hands on Hopkins's book and find out how to do it right. The Spy Who Loved Cooking German spies are finally opening up their vaults to expose the secrets the world has been wondering about for a long time. But the stories they’re willing to talk about don’t involve espionage or political intrigue. “Topf Secret” is a cookbook (“Topf” means pot in German), that features recipes that range from Scottish Haggis to Central African Dongo Dongo – and each dish comes from countries that German agents might have been keeping an eye on in years gone by. “We want to awaken people's curiosity and get them to identify with the service,” explained a spokeswoman for the Bundesnachrichtendienst, the German agency. But if your taste buds are craving something a little more flavorful than recipes, don’t worry. The book will also include stories from BND spies about their travels and adventures. Some are true and some aren’t.
One anecdote tells the tale of a BND worker who started to tell a Chinese military attaché about Rwandan gorillas. And the operative was a bit confused when the attaché started taking notes. "He had confused gorillas with guerrillas and was looking forward to telling his boss about the creation of a new guerrilla centre and the prospect of a whole new proxy war in the heart of Africa," said the anonymous agent.
The cookbook is part of the BND’s public relations blitz. A spokeswoman said it might even help with recruitment. In addition to the recipe compilation, the agency is planning to open a visitor’s centre in Berlin this year, which will offer up pens, mugs and men’s underwear that are printed with slogans such as “Restricted” and “For Your Eyes Only”. Now wouldn’t it be nice if CSIS could come up with something that funky.

The first is Rooibos tea from South Africa. It is non-caffeine but has the most amazing 'body' for a tea! This really is a drink I can substitute for coffee (nothing can substitute for coffee first thing in the morning though!) The second is Lapsang Souchong Tea from Twinings . (The variety has a maroon wrappers) The package describes this as 'The celebrated black tea with a distinctive smoky flavour from the Fujian province of China.' Even funnier, the description on the Twinings site describes it: 'Principally an elegant warm afternoon tea with cucumber sandwiches' type of tea. To me, it smells like a forest fire and is so out of the ordinary that it's well worth having in the pantry for those times when you want something a bit different.
