Links to Sudan Sudan - History Historically, sparsely-populated Sudan has served as the crossroads linking Black southern Africa with the Mediterranean areas and the southern Sahara with the Red Sea. In about 2000 B.C., Egypt colonized Nubia (now northeastern Sudan), from which it took slaves and soldiers, gold, ivory, and precious stones. Nubia controlled Egypt briefly around 750 B.C., and continued to dominate the middle Nile until A.D. 350, when it was colonized by the Ethiopia-based empire of Aksum. Ethiopia and Nubia accepted Christianity in the 6th century and remained Christian until colonized by Moslems in the 15th century. The Sudan (as the country was known before 1975) was ruled as an Anglo-Egyptian condominium from 1899 until achieving independence as a parliamentary republic on 1 January 1956. After a military coup in November 1958, a Supreme Council of the Armed Forces was established and ruled until October 1964, when it was overthrown in a civilian revolution. Subsequent governments failed to improve the economic situation or to deal with the problem of the insurgent southern provinces, and in May 1969 power was seized by a group of officers, led by Col Gaafar Mohammed Numeri, who assumed the rank of major-general.

From the air Buoth is barely visible: a few huts and an airstrip. Look closer, and large herds of long-horned cattle are visible grazing on the edge of glittering swamps and watercourses. The watercourses are the interconnecting channels of the Bahr-el-Ghazal (Nam River), a tributary of the White Nile, which flows from East Central Africa through Sudan to Egypt; the cattle here belong to the Nuer people, the second largest ethnic group in South Sudan, between one and two million strong. The US Committee for Refugees says that Sudan has the biggest population of displaced people of any country in the world.

Make Money Sudan HISTORY Sudan was a collection of small, independent states from the beginning of the Christian era until 1820-21, when Egypt conquered and unified the northern portion of the country. Although Egypt claimed all of present Sudan during most of the 19th century, it was unable to establish effective control of southern Sudan, which remained an area of fragmented tribes subject to frequent attacksby slave raiders. The National Unionist Party (NUP), under Prime Minister Ismail el- Azhari, dominated the first cabinet, which was soon replaced by a coalition of conservative political forces. In 1958, following a period of economic difficulties and political maneuvering that paralyzed public administration, Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Abboud overthrew the parliamentary regime in a bloodless coup. Gen. Abboud did not carry out his promises to return Sudan to civilian government, however, and popular resentment against army rule led to a wave of riots and strikes in late October 1964 that forced the military to relinquish power. The Abboud regime was followed by a provisional civilian government until parliamentary elections in April 1965 led to a coalition government of the Umma and National Unionist Parties under Prime Minister Muhammad Ahmad Mahjoub. Between 1966 and 1969, Sudan had a series of governments that proved unable either to agree on a permanent constitution or to cope with problems of factionalism, economic stagnation, and ethnic dissidence.

Religion and Politics in Sudan: A Humanitarian Agency's Perspective Introduction My task today is to provide you with the perspective of an international, Christian, relief and development agency which is operational in Sudan. In particular, how does World Vision understand the conflict in Sudan and the role which religion plays in the conflict? What implications does the role of religion have for resolving the conflict? The argument which I will present to you is that religion plays both a conflictual role and a unifying or reconciling role. I must state from the outset that my argument is not based on antipathy toward the Muslim parties in the north, or sympathy toward the non-Muslim parties in the south, but on the reality in Sudan which our vantage point as a humanitarian agency has afforded us. History of World Vision's Involvement in Sudan World Vision (WV) began its commitment to Sudan in 1972, at first working through partner organizations. Later in the early 1980s, WV began an operational presence in Sudan. However, in 1988 the Government of Sudan (GOS) declared several Christian NGOs, including WV, persona non grata in the predominantly Muslim north. As a result, WV withdrew from the north and concentrated operations in the south, though efforts continued to re-establish relations with the government. WV started its work in the south prior to the formation of Operation Lifeline Sudan in 1989, and has been an active member of the consortium since its inception.
