TURTLE TRIVIA: Did you know that New York State was one of the earliest governments to enact protective legislation on turtles? The Forest, Fish and Game Law of 1905 contained the following statement: "...taking, killing or exposing for sale all land turtles or tortoises, including the box and wood turtle, is hereby prohibited." Today, Box ( Terrapene sp ) and Wood Turtles ( Clemmys insculpta ) cannot be collected, posessed, imported, killed or sold without a permit. The Bog Turtle ( Clemmys muhlenbergii ) was added in 1966 and was the FIRST reptile to be included on the New York State Endangered Species list in 1974.

I. TURTLE COINS IN ANTIQUITY
Turtles appeared on some of the earliest coins ever struck. The earliest coinage of ancient Greece was that of the state of Aegina, an island state reaching its commercial zenith long before Athens came into prominence. Aegina produced its first silver coins about 700 B.C. and these coins depicted excellent likenesses of sea turtles. For the next 300 years (from the 6th century B.C. to the 4th century B.C.), Aegina produced large numbers of coins, all with turtle designs. The earlier coins all depicted sea turtles but after Aegina was occupied by Attic troops in the 5th century B.C., the figure on the coins changed very suddenly to the Marginated Tortoise (Testudo marginate). These Aegean coins were accepted as currency throughout the entire Peloponnesus and were known by most people simply as "turtle". They were struck on a heavier standard than the coins of Athens, causing the Athenians to call them "thick drachmas". After the fall of Aegina, more than two thousand years passed without a single chelonian coin being issued by any government anywhere. Great Britian, Scotland, in 1566 issued a 15 shillings coin with a stylized tortoise climbing a crowned palm tree (Seaby's S-5425). In 1609, Zeeland, Northern Netherlands produced a cooper jeton with turtle. Then, in 1934 the Fiji Islands began issuing six-pence pieces bearing a representation of a Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas). This was the beginning of the modern era of turtle coins.

General Shelled Info All shelled reptiles are Chelonians, but not all Chelonians are the same. There are the aquatics, the semi-terrestrial, and the tortoises. There are vast differences in their care, what works for one will not work for the other. Check out our FAQ's for some answers to health care. Box turtles are semi-terrestrials, they are not tortoises, their diet and care is very different from that of the tortoise. Aquatic turtles are not to be kept as if they are fish, even though the set up for them is similar to fish. Treating them as if they are fish will kill them. Many species are federally protected, this is not sea turtles only, many other species are protected, too. Before investing in a turtle please research them thoroughly. They are not cheap to keep, they have specific needs, and frankly I'm tired of seeing people take them home for pets because they are "cool" only to kill them through ignorance. I founded the Sacramento Turtle and Tortoise Club in April of 1981 and at present we have approximately 950 members. The dues are only $2.00 a year because it is important to me for everyone who wishes, to receive the newsletter and have a sense of belonging to a club devoted to turtles and tortoises. Of course, donations are always welcome, but not a necessity. To join the club, respond to the address at the bottom of this page.
We have three well-attended meetings a year and a TURTLERAMA each August which is our educational display and members are encouraged to set up their turtles and tortoises and inform the public as to the proper care of these unique creatures. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions you might have, and I will respond promptly.

Let´s Play! Spin the large donut disk and see how it falls. Which side is up - "turtle in" or "turtle out"? Pick a colored turtle shell and place it inside the large donut disk to determine which turtle you need to find in the pond. Is it the blue "turtle in"? Turn over one of the circles to try and make a match. If you did, collect a turtle token. If not, turn the circle back over but remember it for later. If you turn over the shuffle circle, you get to try and trick the other players by switching the position of any two turtles in the pond. The game ends when the thirteen turtle tokens have been collected, and the player who has the most wins! What Do You Learn? Builds memory skills and color recognition.

Chelonians
Please choose an animal from the list below:
Order Chelonia There are approx 294 species of chelonians alive today. They all share a basic appearance, with a hard shell made up of scutes (hard, bony skin) that can be described as either a hard or soft shell. This shell consists of two parts: the top dorsal carapace and the plastron (the part that protects the belly). Chelonians are a well-known group and can be found in ponds, streams, lakes, and oceans. Several species are endangered. There are three main groups of chelonians: turtles (medium-sized freshwater chelonians and large saltwater chelonians), tortoises (large land dwelling chelonians sometimes found in the desert), and terrapins (small turtles, in North America considered to be one species with hollow plates on the carapace, and in Great Britain considered to be a number of species of pond turtles). There are 11 families: Chelydridae (snapping turtles, alligator snapping turtles) 3 spp
Emydidae (pond turtles, box turtles, terrapins) 111 spp
