65. Hibernation Of Turtles And Tortoises
Hibernation of turtles and tortoises. To Hibernate or Not to Hibernate? Notall turtles and tortoises hibernate in their natural environments.
http://www.mesavet.com/library/hibernation.htm
Hibernation of Turtles and Tortoises Definitions Hibernation - State of dormancy coinciding with the cold of winter. Brumation - used by some to specify hibernation in reptiles as separate from that in mammals. Estivation - a strategy to avoid harsh environments during summer months; thought to be a method to conserve water. Hibernation in More Detail: Hibernation is thought to occur mainly in response to endogenous cues such as short day lengths and the onset of cooler weather when the lack of suitable food sources and the climatic conditions are not conducive for normal reptile behavior. Endogenous cues including seasonal cycles in hormones, amino acids, and neurotransmitters are also thought to play a role in hibernation of some reptiles, but these roles are not yet well defined or understood. During hibernation there is substantial depression in metabolic function including cardiovascular function. Digestion ceases, the circulation is reduced, and the immune and other defense systems slow or stop. A turtle that is preparing to hibernate will become sluggish and have a decreased appetite. Turtles vs. Tortoises Turtles Tortoises Turtles are aquatic. Tortoises are terrestrial. Turtles have streamline shells to aid in swimming. Tortoises have high-domed shells to hold extra water and fat supplies. Turtles have webbed feet to make it easier to swim. Tortoises have large, stumpy feet to make it easier to walk on different surfaces. Turtles swim at speeds around 10 mph. Tortoises walk at speeds around 0.17 mph. Turtles may be omnivorous. Tortoises are herbivores. Turtles are good climbers. Tortoises are not. This table is a generalization. Some turtles such as the box turtles are not aquatic and some tortoises such as pancake tortoises are good climbers . Nutrition of Turtles and Tortoises
Turtles, tortoises and terrapins are all in the group known as chelonians . They all possess a shell. The term tortoise is usually used to refer to terrestrial turtles in the United States, but we do have a few that stay predominately on the land, but are referred to as turtles , for example, the box turtle and the North American wood turtle. As they are such a diverse group of animals, it would be expected that the different species would have widely diverse diets. Green sea turtles are largely vegetarian and consume primarily see grasses, and the other sea turtles are mainly carnivorous, feeding on jellyfish, crabs, sea urchins, fish, sponges and barnacles. Some land tortoises are vegetarian, and spend their days grazing and foraging. Box turtles eat a little bit of everything encountered, and they are considered omnivores, meaning that they consume lots of bugs and worms, as well as plant material. Water turtles begin life as meat eaters and as they mature, they begin to consume more and more plant material. Correctly feeding your pet turtle or tortoise begins with knowing exactly what kind of chelonian you actually have. If you are unsure as to what kind of turtle or tortoise you actually own, check in an atlas, or ask a knowledgeable herper or breeder to help you in the proper identification. Once you know what type of chelonian that you have, feeding it becomes a lot easier.

Hibernation Guidelines for Turtles and Tortoises
Paula Morris . Originally published in The Bridge , September 1994 Hibernation is nature's mechanism to protect its cold-blooded creatures (and some warm-blooded animals as well) in cold weather or when food and water are scarce. Dormancy also seems to affect the reproductive cycles of chelonian species, whether non-tropical or tropical, and zoos often provide a "cooling period" to stimulate breeding activity when temperatures normalize. To keep the information general, I'm dividing turtles and tortoises into only two categories: non-tropical (those species that do hibernate), and tropical (those species that do not). Turtles and tortoises can hibernate up to a full eight months of the year, depending upon latitudinal location. The rule-of-thumb to guide you on your research should be: The farther from the equator the species occurs naturally, the more likely it is to hibernate; the closer to the equator, the less likely. Which Species Need Hibernation Or A Period Of Dormancy?

A great book
This book is the first thing a potential turtle owner should buy before getting a turtle. It is inexpensive and loaded with the right information regarding the care of turtles, both aquatic and terrestrial species. The best part of the book is the section about which turtles make good pets for a first time owner and which turtles don't.
For such little investment a wealth of information. From species identification and care basics to 72 color pictures and great tips from true turtle experts. This is a must for a turtle enthusiasts library!

Turtles and Tortoises
Turtles and Tortoises
Species of these reptiles, belonging to the order Testudines , occur in all the continents of the world, with the exception of Antarctica. They rove all habitats from open seas to arid deserts, and have existed almost unchanged for over 200 million years. While many of the species are very different, they do have many things in common. All turtles and tortoises are protected by a shell, and all reproduce by laying eggs. Unfortunately, these two factors have put them under considerable pressure from mankind.
Threats
While they have existed for hundreds of millions of years, today their populations are under great threat, and they are rapidly disappearing from areas where formerly they were abundant. Massive destruction of habitat, egg collection and direct exploitation for the pet and commercial trade has had a huge impact on numbers. Whole shells and items made from tortoise shell are readily available in stores and markets, as are stuffed specimens. The meat is also consumed, and other parts are used in the preparation of medicinal products. This, combined with overhunting and habitat destruction and pollution, has raised concern over their wellbeing and future.
