Education > Interesting Documents > Plato's Apology Introduction There is not much in the other Dialogues which can be compared with the Apology. The same recollection of his master may have been present to the mind of Plato when depicting the sufferings of the Just in the Republic. The Crito may also be regarded as a sort of appendage to the Apology, in which Socrates, who has defied the judges, is nevertheless represented as scrupulously obedient to the laws. The idealization of the sufferer is carried still further in the Gorgias, in which the thesis is maintained, that 'to suffer is better than to do evil;' and the art of rhetoric is described as only useful for the purpose of self-accusation. The parallelisms which occur in the so-called Apology of Xenophon are not worth noticing, because the writing in which they are contained is manifestly spurious. The statements of the Memorabilia respecting the trial and death of Socrates agree generally with Plato; but they have lost the flavour of Socratic irony in the narrative of Xenophon. The Apology or Platonic defence of Socrates is divided into three parts: 1st. The defence properly so called; 2nd. The shorter address in mitigation of the penalty; 3rd. The last words of prophetic rebuke and exhortation.

Vietnam War > International War Crimes Tribunal - 1967
20. BERTRAND RUSSELL
Closing Address to the Stockholm Session
The International War Crimes Tribunal has been subject to abuse from people who have much to hide. It has been said that the conclusions of this Tribunal were known in advance. The conclusions of our Tribunal are built out of the evidence. The evidence is abundant. It is precisely because the knowledge of crime is a cause for inquiry that we are holding this session. When the evidence on aggression and the systematic bombardment of the entire population of Vietnam becomes known to the public, we are in no doubt that all men of integrity who examine this evidence will be compelled to reach the same conclusions.

In the 1990's Vietnamese contemporary art proliferated rapidly. Although influenced by the outside world, many young artists felt it important to maintain their cultural identity. Well respected among the younger crowd, senior artist Nghiem was one of the first to look back to ancient traditions and village folklore as inspirations. His courage to innovate and respect for the past helped give balance to the younger artists as they were thrust into the limelight. Nguyen Tu Nghiem (1922-) The Dragon's Realm, 1994 gouache on rice paper, 21" x 30" Amit May Collection Dang Xuan Hoa is one of the first new generation artists to gain international recognition in the early 1990's. One article of faith in the MIA mythology is that the US government expected5,000 prisoners to be returned by the North vietnamese at the end of the war
http://www.miafacts.org/5000.htm
The "5,000 POWs"
Summary . One article of faith in the MIA mythology is that "the U.S. government expected 5,000 prisoners to be returned by the North Vietnamese at the end of the war." This statement appears in many MIA websites, home pages, newsletters, speeches, and other material. The source of the figure 5,000 is cited as the New York Times At the time of Operation Homecoming the U.S. POW return in the spring of 1973 just over 2,500 Americans were even missing, half of those were known dead (Killed in Action - Body Not Recovered), and the other half were generally believed to be dead. So, a little over 2,500 men not returned, how is it that the U.S. government expected twice that many to walk out of the jungles of Vietnam and the prisons of Hanoi? Well, the fact is, no one expected that. The figure of 5,000 is a concoction of the MIA myth makers. Read on.

Where did the number 5,000 originate?
From time to time, I have heard or read claims that the U.S. government "expected" 5,000 POWs to be returned from Vietnam at the end of the war. I found this number to be rather wacky, because only a little over 2,500 men were even missing. The two most active newsgroups dealing with the Vietnam War the moderated soc.history.war.vietnam

http://www.miafacts.org/propose.htm
A Proposal
Summary . For too long, actions by and information from the U. S. government and from MIA activists have fed the mythology that U. S. personnel were abandoned in captivity at the end of the Vietnam War. The facts are straightforward: No U. S. personnel were held in captivity after the end of Operation Homecoming in Spring, 1973. As in all wars, there are men who were lost and who will never be recovered. The
U. S. Department of Defense is searching for the missing from Vietnam with an effort never before seen anywhere in history. Yet, the myth persists that the government is covering up information, is lying to families, and is doing nothing. It is past time to stop the nonsense. This proposal, if adopted, will go a long way to doing just that. Many who read this proposal will become angry with me, including some old friends. Popularity is not the purpose here. The purpose is to restore good sense and reason, to end the kabuki theater that has characterized this issue for too long, and to still honor the sacrifice made by brave men.

Numbers in Asian Music T R‚N Q UANG H AI The ancients saw music as an application of cosmic algebra. The Chinese, in their science, considered only the qualitative aspect of the Numbers that they manipulated as signs and symbols. Among the three functions of numbers, the distinction between cardinal and ordinal use is less essential than the distributive function. Thanks to this quality, numbers provide the function of uniting a set, of grouping. The ratios expressing relationships among musical sounds have a correspondence in all other aspects of an event. The governance of these relations allows comparisons between musical harmony and all other harmonic classifications: colours, shapes or planets. Theory The number 5 represents the 5 elements, the 5 movements. "Five" evokes the 5 senses, the 5 organs that are a coagulation of breaths (as wind instruments). NEW YORK Historical memory has never done terribly well in this country, but our national case of collective amnesia over the Vietnam War surely sets a record for mass delusion. Former Sen. Bob Kerrey (finally) admits that he led a commando raid on the village of Thanh Phong on the night of Feb. 25, 1969, that ended up with the accidental killings of between 12 and 14 unarmed civilians. One of the six men under Kerrey's command alleges that Kerrey ordered the Vietnamese lined up and shot. For all we know, both men may be telling the truth as they remember it. According to Dr. Frank Ochberg, a former associate director of the National Institute of Mental Health, the stress of combat "makes it possible to remember things in a part of the brain that causes you to focus on certain events and completely ignore others." In an April 29 op-ed piece that appeared in the Washington Post, Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., Max Cleland, D-Ga., and Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., wrote: "Many people have been forced to do things in war that they are deeply ashamed of later. Yet for our country to blame the warrior instead of the war is among the worst, and, regrettably, most frequent mistakes we as a country can make." And so the lies live on.

Hanoi, the capital city of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, in many ways characterizes the old Vietnam, the French Vietnam of the colonial days. It is one of the most European cities of Southeast Asia, with an old style feeling on the streets and in the back alleys. Pulitzer prize winning author Neil Sheehan calls Hanoi "a city caught in the warp of time, a place of history and icons, some dead, some still living to remind one that here the past never dies." It is a beautiful city and can best be seen by cyclo or by just poking around.
At Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport (located approximately 35 km north of Hanoi), taxis are plentiful. They generally start their opening price at around U.S.$25, but this can easily be bargained down to U.S.$15. Arriving passengers also have the option of taking a minibus to the Vietnam Airlines booking office on Quang Trung Street. Arriving passengers can purchase tickets at a booth near the exit.
